Gibson has earned a reputation of having less-than-steller quality control in recent years. Is it true or is it an exaggerated myth?
In this episode of Gibson A Go Go, I talk about the minor issues I had with my 2021 Gibson SG Bass and share my thoughts on the matter of Gibson's QC.
#GibsonAGoGo
-------------
The SG Bass has the legendary looks, sound and feel which made it one of Gibson's most iconic basses. The short scale length is actually a big part of this sound! While the short scale length of the SG Bass is preferred by smaller players, it's also preferred by many for the strong fundamental tone for which this short scale bass is known. As expected, the solid mahogany body has deeply sculpted scarfing and the rounded profile mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard feels familiar and comfortable. A pair of calibrated SG bass pickups (neck and bridge) with individual volume and master tone controls add further tonal possibilities.

"I don't care how it sounds, I just wanna know how it feels." This is some serious wisdom. You can change the way a bass sounds quite a bit through your technique, pedals, amp, and whatnot. It's much harder to improve the feel of a bass. Not only that, but I'm finding that many people (including bass players) either don't notice or don't care about bass tone. As long as it sounds good, which is mostly how well you play, then any bass can work for almost anything.

Gibson hates bassists , that's why I generally hate Gibson. They could bring back the Grabber, the RD bass, The Victory bass but the go into the endless minutia of Les Paul variant that are a distinction without a difference. The photos and the checklist is all marketing

Great review & insight Chris, I share your opinion overall & especially in regard to buying basses that might have been sitting in a music store chains location for a bit, sometimes guitars & basses will need tweaking, especially if the music store didn't give it the once over before hanging it on a hook in the Showroom, ... I go for the feel like you do, if I feel a good vibe & like the playability & feel like one with the instrument I will usually buy it & do tweaking when I get it home, I have also questioned fret board woods and woods in general every now again I guess that when you have been playing for a long period of time like we have you develop the experience & a feel for what works & what doesn't for you, anyway I could ramble on as well, Good Job as always Chris. 😀👍

I've owned 2 ES-345 guitars, an ES-335 guitar, 2 Les Paul guitars, 2 SG guitars, 2 EB-3 basses and 2 SG basses. Never, ever had a single QC issue with any of them. My current Gibsons are a 2020 SG bass and a 2022 SG '61. Both are as close to perfect as you can get.

Bravo! Well presented. Not sure if it’s just me but when I see an SG body style, it automatically makes me think of Angus. So, seeing it in a bass configuration is a bit weird. That being said, after watching this video I have a different opinion. Thanks for taking the time to go over the instrument in such detail, well thought out and articulated. I have the 120th Anniversary SG.Bass, it's my third Gibson now along with my 75 Ripper and 81 Victory Std. The 120th suffered from that same loose neck Humbucker and I was pretty upset with the need to pad the cover to keep it performing as it should have from the get go. Beyond that, I am very happy with the bass and feel it captures a storied vibe. The worn cherry is essentially brown, but, it looks beautiful and feels right. My Ripper is my baby, though, and I really hope we get more basses back in the regular lineup from Gibson in the future. I've always wanted to try an RD Artist, , G3, the 20/20, and the Gibson IV. Love your Gibson content --keep it coming!!!

Great video! I feel like Gibson's GC has really improved over the past few years. That being said, some time ago (2016, I believe), I played a new T-Bird at a dealer here in Germany, and it really wasn't good. It sounded fine and everything, but the build quality was just sad. Like you mentioned, the pickups were pretty loose, so that you couldn't even rest your finger without pushing them away from the strings, there was glue residue in several places where the wings were glued to the neck that they just sprayed over. And a few more issues that I'd not want to see in a 1600€ bass. So, here's to hoping that they got things sorted out, because I love Gibson basses. Especially, the vintage ones like RDs, EB-2s and EB-3s.

Im mid 60s, been playing Gibson 6str electrics (mainly LPs, and 335s) since 76. Last year i decided to buy a bass (bucket list), so , being a Gibson devotee (i too, have always loved the feel of .. most.. Gibson's), i bought a LPj dc tribute. I picked one up in a local shop, and just "felt" it , for 10 minutes. The shop assistant wanted to pug it in, but i was happy just to hold , feel the 3 that were there. I like them. I waited too long, and when i returned to purchase one, they had 0. I looked online, and there was 2 left, in all of Australia.. I ended up getting one sent 2,000 miles. Iv never bought an instrument, sight unseen. Anyway , i was happy enough, that i got 'a good one', felt, played, sounded fine. It did have QC issues, bone dry fretboard (no issue), but the fretboard join the neck had a sharp edge, right along 70% of the neck. Luckily, im not fussed about cosmetics, so some fine sandpaper took it down to smooth. Instant 'heavy relic" neck, on a pristine bass. I was a little let down with Gibson letting it leave factory, it was 100% a second, at best.. Anyway, i love it. I joined a band, as a bass player, do the odd gig, rehearse most weeks. Its a great instrument. I have changed the bridge, and the pick up, but iv allways modded my guitars.. I, may, add a SG bass, to gain a different tone..

I bought a new Gibson SG bass from Sweetwater in 2020. I had loose pickup covers to the point that they rattled when I played. Added foam like you did to remedy. Fret ends are like a saw and not comfortable to play for long periods. Will get that fixed at some point. Replaced the awful 3 point bridge with a Hipshot too. Overall not a bad bass. It’s not my first choice, but it’s my only short scale and has a unique tone and playability. Agree with you on cheap instruments, but I can’t resist hot- rodding an instrument that feels good, but maybe could sound a little better.

I just got a 2022 Non reverse thunderbird and it's a fantastic bass. Sounds amazing and feels great. My only issue I've had with it was the finish on it. The inverness green is gorgeous but there are some issues up by the neck joint. The only other thing is that the edge of the fingerboard does that orange peel thing. That's my one big complaint with almost all gibson basses. You can feel were the fretboard ends and the neck begins. It's not a smooth transition. It's not a major thing and not necessarily a deal breaker but it is a little annoying that that happens on a $1900 bass where most epiphone's I've played don't do that

I've played many brand new high end Fender basses at our local GC that were essentially unplayable. I asked the salesman if these instruments were ever setup. He said "No". They receive them from the factory and then just hang them on the wall. And, they hang in the dry southwest air and never get adjusted. I think you make a good point that it was more than likely shipped in good condition and things went downhill from there until you purchased it.

Eh I work at a guitar store and they come in with dry fretboards and all kinds of issues. They are still my favorite too though. I have three and they are always the first ones I grab. I’m a tech and get to inspect all the new ones that come in. 99% of the time the fretboard is too dry and there are a few small qc issues, but no more than fender. The Mexican fenders have been awful lately. If we could send them back we would send back more than half.

Like you I love the SG. The Gibson is not in my budget so I went with the poor man’s Epiphone. The platform was good enough for modding so I agree mods makes for exciting projects. I put on a Babicz bridge like yours, a three way toggle switch, swapped out the neck pickup with an Artec ceramic 30k magnet. It’s all bass to move walls. So I’m with you bro. The only person that should like your instruments 🎸 is you. You are not a sell out! As for quality control it can be a hit or a miss with any manufacturer. Not every unit is going to be perfect. I am waiting to see if Gibson will be innovative enough to make an SG where you can add an after market preamplifier. Just so it can be a super hot short scale that kicks ass. Last but not least the most annoying thing with the SG is the 3 point bridge. It’s time they make the babicz bridge the go to piece of hardware. It clean, modern, and does the job as a high mass piece of hardware.

I guess that there was still some scrappy glue on the upper frets means that the retailer was simply the middle man..still a shame that you had to oil the fret board and reset the foam under the pickup. For that kind of money the bass shouldn't have had those issues!

The flip side of that is that for the money, I get a great-feeling and great-sounding instrument with a hard case that will retain its value for years. Which isn’t something you can say for many overseas models of the same price.

I received my CME Gibson SG bass in Drab Green. The condition issues were as you indicated. The fretboard was totally dried out. The truss rod nut was totally loose causing the rod to rattle. The neck pick up rattling inside the cover. Oil the board and adjust the truss rod. Additional foam in the pickup cavity. Cleared up all the issues. Personal preference I replaced the factory bridge with a Hipshot and just waiting on La Bella Flats to arrive. Is the lesson not to expect a new instrument to be playable out of the box from an online retailer? I don’t know.

CME has offered to provide a return shipping label and replacement. I chose not to return this bass figuring I know what I have with this bass after making the necessary corrections rather than bringing in another with possible unknown issues. Further CME stepped up and refunded $65.00 to cover my time and inconvenience for the set up and repair.

I'm like you. I keep gravitating back to Gibson. I have Fenders and several boutique basses. They are all groovy, but I get what you say about the Gibson lure. Especially the SG/EB3 model. I have a 90s Les Paul bass w/bartolinis and I have an SG bass I bought used....not sure of the year. I'm wanting to purchase another SG and set it up with flatwounds. What is your opinion on the better production years for them?

Luthier here. Love your honest opinion!!! Gibson quality control has fortunately improved lately but like you I do get mad at certain details that are overlooked regarding the price you pay for the brand. About how an instrument feels wether from the US or overseas: I honestly think it depends on wether the instrument is decently set up and the quality of its equipment. Obviously better attention to detail and character is to be expected from a more expensive instrument. But it's not always the case especially from famous brands we all know and appreciate. Another factor is to be taken into consideration too. The more you play an instrument, the better it sounds. It's what my 15+ years of working experience has taught me. This does not mean you should skip setting it up every now and then!

Bought an SG bass new a year ago, had to try 5 in different stores before I found one that worked properly. On one the bridge was miles above the body like it had not been screwed in properly, one had a mystery rattle. My one was fine when new now the pots are crackling so time for a fix up. For a premium price product it’s pretty awful, I nearly gave up and won’t bother in future. My next purchase was a Mexican fender mail order where the live from the pickup was wired to the tone pot rather than the volume pot, so when you turn down the tone it goes quiet. Half an hour with KZbin and a soldering iron fixed it but for a new instrument not ok at all. Doesn’t anybody check these things properly? The answer is obviously no.

I totally agree with what you say throughout but I'm surprised you didn't mention Gibson's use of nitro lacquer on all their instruments as this is a huge factor in terms of premium feel. Lacquer just feels (and smells) better to me and is a major reason why I've bought Gibsons. I have multiple SG's, have had multiple Les Paul's and have an LP Special and most have had issues with QC or just like you said changes in climate or lack of upkeep. I recently bought an Epiphone EB3 which is how I found your videos just looking into the SG style EB basses, we'll see how that works out, I'll be modding it so overall quality is less of a factor since I can set up my own guitars and do any finishing. The set neck and full scale (and price) on the Epi was the big factor for me in getting an EB3 but I know I'll be getting an actual Gibson EB sometime since it just has the premium feel that makes playing it a joy as you say. Sorry for the essay😄and thanks for your insights into the Gibson QC and price topics, people are so quick to complain without thinking what happens between the factory and their hands.

Personally I don't like the SG or Les Paul or really anything Gibson makes. They look like relics to me, and I don't like the way they feel in my hands, or sound when I play them. But that's just my personal preferences. Given the ham-handed attempts they've made, it's obvious Gibson has never really cared about bass. The problem with Gibson is that their quality, in terms of engineering and manufacturing, has not kept pace with import makers. Gibson hasn't necessarily gotten worse, but everyone else has gotten better, so there are no really good reasons to want a Gibson over, say, an Ibanez, or a Schecter or an ESP/Ltd. You get roughly equivalent quality for half the cost or less. All they really have going for them, IMO, is that classic design and branding. I could not possibly care less about that, so they definitely aren't for me.

I gave up on Gibson as a bass guitar company years and years ago. It's very evident that they just don't care to put any time into a bass line because It's obviously not what sells. At this point (and for a while now), Epiphone has a better variety than Gibson. That being said, Gibson USA COULD do so much with a revamped line of basses if they wanted to be creative enough, even if it were some vintage models that they never reissued.

For $1999 I shouldn't have to polish frets, give TLC to the fretboard, mess with the pickups etc. So your saying the retailer is responsible for unboxing and maintaining every instrument in their inventory ? The retailer put glue residue on the frets and loosened the pickups ? They're supposed to open every box and polish fretboards and frets ? Come on man, you can't be serious. Stop making excuses for Gibson. Their quality has gone to crap and everybody knows it.

I think it's interesting that some people think all fretboards need to be oiled. Not all do. Certainly not rosewood boards. I have real experience to back this up. Just throwing this piece of data out there: I have owned a Gibson Les Paul Classic with a rosewood fretboard for the last 15 years. I am the original owner. I have never oiled the fretboard a single time and have probably put hundreds if not thousands of hours on the guitar. I only wipe the strings and fretboard with a dry cloth after each play session. My Les Paul spent its entire life in interior Alaska and Colorado, which are bone dry environments. The fretboard looks flawless, feels flawless, and there is no evidence whatsoever of the fretboard being "dry."

And any time you order a bass and it is exposed to changing atmospheric conditions it definitely will not be showroom ready. Generally a music store will do a full setup and fine tune everything, and the price will go up with the labor. Twenty five years ago I remembered 50 dollars was the standard price for a fret job. And it is very basic knowledge about the different quality levels of wood. The pickup idea is not practical unless there is some sort of demand for it. I disagree with you on oversea instruments feeling not as nice, as American made. And I really didn't understand why your perspective would be interesting. I also think your generation just takes everything it's handed. And the millennial's in general don't know anything about what to expect with quality from different factories. As well it was really painful to just sit here and listen to you speculate. You need to get out of your basement and go to music stores and be humble enough to ask questions. Personally I don't think I will ever work with a millennial again. Just because you're way too slow. And you guys take way too long to say something. Oh yeah you think your politically correct now!? F##k that, and who cares about your girl bass? I don't really think you are even strong enough to be a host of bass reviews.

I got you to watch the video and leave a very long and thoughtful comment. Seems like I’m a terrific bass review host.

@@TheBassChannel I figured I'd at least finish the video, before leaving the comment. Definitely one might be ahead to go with a Spector bantam4. Though overall the shortscale bass would be mostly a little too novelty. But I definitely would like to see people not ashamed to just start out on a short scale. Also I think Mahagony does vary in density alot. I guess you got a pretty fair deal on the bass. And at least it will be plenty to make some guys envious. Maybe the Sg bass would really sound great through GK neo 15 cabinets. If you like warm and resonate with long sustain.

"Generally a music store will do a full setup" is just the beginning of your loss of credibility, if you're talking about between distribution and retail sale. Have you been to a Sam Ash? A Guitar Center? Have you ever seen anything like a full setup between the guitar coming out of the shipping box and being hung on the wall? - Secondly, why would *your* perspective be interesting? You didn't say word one about Gibson QC, the entire topic of the video. You railed against millennials - hell, half of us on the channel are actually too old to be millennials (plus, Chris is probably the oldest-fashioned millennial I've personally ever met) - but thanks for playing, we do look great for our ages, if a little cheeseburger-happy. Chris's opinion videos are shot in a stream of consciousness style; this isn't a buzzfeed list video where they call it a "top 10 whatever" and take a half hour to get through the list of 10. - And thirdly, it appears the point of the video was completely lost on you. The question was 'is Gibson QC bad?' and the conclusion is 'probably not as bad as people have been saying'; the fuck are you talking about 'get out of your basement and ask questions'? I don't really think you are strong enough to watch bass editorials.

@@davedixon2167 Dave I just want to ring your bell. Go enjoy your bowl of kosher hot dogs, it's all you can afford. Fuck everything you had to say. Your just a punk-ass follower. I don't give a slight shit about your opinion on Gibson guitars. I hate Guitar Center, and I refuse to buy from them. Get off your thumb and out of your basement. Make my day Dave, anytime and anywhere.

@@marioduron4376 Oh no! Someone Is Upset On The Internet! But sure, I'll play; I brought this ire upon myself by daring to rebut a personal attack on my fellow man, after all. 1. I didn't express my own opinion on Gibson guitars, so it's nice you don't give a shit about something I didn't say. Reading comprehension: D-minus. --1b. A punkass follower of *what*? --1c. *You're 2. I grew up fairly poor and made my own way, so it delights me to tell you you've missed the mark once again; I'm doing just fine now thanks. 3. Awwww, sounds wike da big boy wanna fight. That's adorable. I probably don't look like much, and pssst - I'm short! - so, perfect target right? ;)
