In this GibsonTV Original Series, host Mark Agnesi travels from city to city to discover the important music landmarks that help to shape that city's music scene. In this episode, Mark travels to Nashville, TN to visit Carter Vintage Guitars. Opening its doors in 2012, Carter Vintage Guitars has quickly become the city’s top spot to buy, sell, and trade guitars of all ages. Mark sits down with store owners Walter and Christie Carter to discuss their life in the guitar business, some of their most famous instruments, and how Carter Vintage got the reputation of being the friendliest store in town.
To check out their full inventory of new, used, and vintage guitars, go to cartervintage.com, and for daily updates on new arrivals follow them on Instagram at @cartervintageguitars.

Let’s take a minute to appreciate how cool is Gibson TV to show a 73 nice Fender Strat and compliment the flamed neck. That’s what this is all about; good instruments despite of the brand. Gibson it’s a hella good guitar company, so do Fender. Nice play, guys. Respect for that.

But I missed out on Gruhn's (still at the old Broadway store) and Carter's because we came after business hours. Must be heaven in there. Side fact: I discovered the young JD Simo playing with the Don Kelley Band at Robert's Western World. KILLER!

What a awesome video!! Any Gibson guitar lovers dream store!! Man wouldn't it be sweet to be rich and walk into that store. Lol.. I'm far far from rich but I have a nice collection of Gibson acoustics. 🤘✌ When I was a kid growing up we'd go to Nashville on Vacation all the time. Back when the Opryland Amusement park was still around. We'd visit all of these amazing places that are so historic and as a kid at the time I just didn't appreciate it as much as I wish I would've. Or certainly like I would now being in my 40's. I absolutely love Nashville (other than the Titans) 😂🤣😁😄 wish I lived there.

@charlesbolton8471

If you want modelers, rack gear, Floyd Rose shred guitars, or any of that type of gear it takes less than 10 minutes to get to the nearest Guitar Center (on Thompson Lane) from Carter Vintage. I’m definitely not a fan of Guitar Center in general, but that location is tremendously better than any other Guitar Center location I’ve been in.

I really enjoyed this segment I have been corresponding with Howard about my 73’ J-50. I know ( it’s a Norlin era) but It’s a special order guitar and an odd one, it has rosewood back, mahogany sides, Sitka top. I think it was made as a personal guitar for a Gibson employee, anyway extra care was taken when made for sure, It’s a super light guitar as well and has volume and tone for days. Howard is going to do an appraisal for me soon. Carter vintage is a legend in Nashville and rightfully so. 🎶

Did a Route 66 type trip with my dad last year, started in Nashville and ended in California, Carter vintage was the best guitar store we went to. Would've been nice to see the electrics and amps that's there in this video as this video does no justice to that side of what's there, literally rare and random amps just laying around like it's nothing, the same type of things that would be the main show piece in most places. Absolutely amazing place, hope to go back some day.

I met Walter when he was still at Gruhn's. There was a '55 Les Paul on the floor, they must have just bought. I asked if I could play it. He knew I was never going to buy it, but he said "Sure! Go ahead." That was the first time I ever played a vintage Les Paul. So, this video hit close to home.

Great video and great interview. The shop is just incredible.....never been there, on my to-do list. So much history. I'll bet the place smells awesome! Nothing like old wood. I don't think i have ever seen an interview with the owner and his wife. They seem like very nice, unassuming people and their philosophy of letting people play these instruments and not being all snooty about it is refreshing. I have been in shops like that and it isn't fun at all. I hope there are more pieces like this. Really enjoyed it!

What a tremendous video. Thank you. And what a tremendous store! I could spend hours (days?) in there just admiring all of those amazing instruments. Fantastic. And nice job by Mark showing so much music history knowledge and then throwing in some sweet blues picking like no big deal. I also love the way you guys appreciate the full history of instrument making in this country, including those from other brands. Looking forward to seeing more from this series. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the great camera work. Nice job!

When I visited Nashville I stopped in at a number of the name guitar shops and Carters was by far my favorite. The fellow I dealt with was friendly and knowledgeable and the selection was great. I worked in a guitar store myself for many years and I appreciated the vibe and inventory. There were quite a few unusual and interesting items for the collectors. I later signed up for their online inventory email and ended up buying something that I was very pleased with.

I’d drive another 9hrs from home just to visit again! Wish I would’ve bought that black Gibson acoustic! It was featherweight light and sounded fabulous! Wish I remembered the model!

I loved that my local guitar store never made me feel like I couldn't play anything. I came in there when I made $50 a week as a kid and played guitars that I'd never get to touch without a down payment at some places, then when I got a job and started playing out more, I made sure they were the store I bought from. Love the vibe of a good local music store
