After having a Dead Strix 870E mobo (code 0d, dead mobo) and broken TUF board delivered, I went with this motherboard. Easiest build yet, it just worked! 9900x, 64GB of T-Create 6000MT's, and 4080 Super. It has been a very strong board as I have pushed it on stress tests and found a split second it bounced up to 5.9Ghz in a Cinebench 23 test. Thanks for your review to get this one out there. There's a lot of comparisons to the ASRock Nova in the comments. You have to decide which is more important to you. Having full PCIe 5.0 x16, but only one M.2 connected directly to the CPU in the case of the Nova. Or three M.2 connected to the CPU directly with this board, and the PCIe 5.0 running at x8 if more than one is used. No GPU planned is using full PCIe 5.0 x16, and this board still has an additional M.2 on the chipset, if you want to run full x16 and have two M.2. The Nova is not better by default, this is a Chipset / CPU lane limitation either way.
@vqa3317 күн бұрын
Thanks for this useful comment! But what are the benefits of M2 connected directly to the CPU?
@vqa3317 күн бұрын
But nova has 8 layer PCB… :) while this card only 6…
@vqa3317 күн бұрын
I think it’s obvious that sharing lanes with M2 is much better than with GPU.
@drewnewby17 күн бұрын
@vqa33 M.2 to CPU is less latency. More PCB layers is usually only to prevent signal interference, which depends on efficiency of trace routing. ASRock may have needed 8 or simple added for "extreme" OC of memory, which most do not do. All boards share lanes between PCIe and storage. Here it's the same, but with the Gigabyte board you have the option to have an additional 2 M.2 directly to the CPU, the ASRock does not.
@vqa3317 күн бұрын
@@drewnewby I’m going to buy X870 tomahawk anyway )) I also prefer avoid lane sharing with the gpu.

As well, yes, PCIe slots are useful for U.2 drive adapter expansion cards, properly high-speed network cards, a multitude of pro A/V cards, etc., etc. It's actually brutal ATX boards by most manufacturers have lost PCIe slots (Gigabyte being a notable exception). @@deloford All gigabyte motherboards with x870e chipset function this way (yes, even the Master), but this only applies to two m.2 5.0 slots beneath the pcie x16 slot. Using the one above it will not affect the bandwidth. When it came to current generation boards and GPUs on pcie gen 4, a 4090 saw almost no bottleneck when used in slots running in x8 mode. Since pcie gen 5 is double the bandwidth of gen 4, I doubt it will see any bottleneck when the primary slot is running in x8 mode. I hope this helps.

I've not had particularly good luck with Gigabyte products outside of mobo's, though from what I was looking at a few months ago on the E variants, this actually looks pretty reasonable versus everything else. At least two usable PCIe full x16 slots, lots of NVME lanes and a respectable backplate. ADD: For those of us running 5300RPM fans, yes, SATA slots do come in handy. 😁 As much as a bother as they are, nvme drives over 4tb aren't particularly plentiful or affordable, so mass storage still defaults to HDDs too.

Quite a few years back (think decades ago) Gigabyte had real quality problems with their motherboards. I can't remember the year, but they took up the issue at a management meeting and was seriously considering ditching the motherboards entirely as the RMA costs made them lose money on every sold MB. They decided to give it one last chance and this time the quality was supposed to be the primary when deciding on construction and choosing make and model of components rather than always go with the cheapest option. This was way before they "invented" the Aurous name, I would say it was more than a decade ago perhaps two. But the change was immediate. The motherboards they released after that cut down on the RMS cost by a lot, and suddenly they were making money on selling motherboards instead of losing money. AFAIK they've kept making decent motherboards since, instead of cutting corners until they fail often enough to cost them more money for the warranty replacements than they make selling them. All in all this doesn't really matter for customers today. I just think it's pretty interesting to know that once they were doing so bad that they were considering ditching the motherboard business.
@C-M-E20 күн бұрын
@@blahorgaslisk7763 That sounds very accurate to my experience with the last GPU I got from them, back in the 280x era. While it never blew up like their power supply woes not too long ago, it overheated even with minimal tasks and would regularly self-destruct into Errorville in games. Between the 280x issue and their QA dipping lower on other product lines, I have been leery to pick up function-centric products from them, though I have eyeballed their TR40 boards numerous times. Good to know the effort is being made to improve!

@@RainOrbs Yeah, I've run into the m.2 downrating other lanes issue before, which was a particular draw to this generation of motherboard that was supposed to fix that (the X870E variants specifically). I've mostly decided to go X670E for half the price depending on the next variants of the X3D chips if the higher core counts (9900 or 9950s) get dual vcache allotments, otherwise the only other x870E boards that work for me are in the $500 range, which is just absurd to get bracketed into that segment for two features.

@CRF-201320 күн бұрын
Yeah, but you can put one PCIe Gen 5 in that gets lanes from the CPU and one Gen 4 that gets its lanes from the chipset and you won't hit the top PCIe slot - so you'll still get the full x16 for your graphics card. This is an issue for all the X870e motherboards, not just Gigabyte.
@a.h.d.h.280320 күн бұрын
@@CRF-2013 I meant the sharing of the PCIe16 5.0 lanes with M.2 SSD. True, not only Gigabyte shares PCIe lanes when M.2 SSD is installed. As far as I know the ASRock X870E Taichi ( and the lite one) has one M.2 which gets 4 lanes PCIe 5.0 without sharing lanes from the PCIe 16 Graphicscard slot. But then again 8 lanes of the PCIe_1 (16 gen 5.0) slot will be shared once the PCIe_2 gets occupied as well. As far as I know now only ASRock Taichi boards do not share PCIE_1 5.0 lanes with PCIE M.2 SSD.
@Boofatcha8 күн бұрын
Is this a bad thing to share lanes? Which mobo did you end up going with? I'm currently researching.
@a.h.d.h.28038 күн бұрын
@@Boofatcha Relatively a bad thing. But PCIe 5.0- will be the next standard, so the graphic cards developers will also be on the 5.0 PCIe platform. I ended up buying an ASRock Taichi X870E motherboard. The first M.2 SSD is PCIe 5.0 without sharing any of the 16 lanes of the PCIe_1 5.0. As far as i know none of the ASRock X870E motherboards share lanes of the5.0 PCIe_1 x16. This chipset and CPU of the Taichi have 24 5.0 PCIe lanes, PCIe_1 x16 for the graphics card, which leaves 8 5.0 PCIe lanes to share. Four of them go to the M.2_1 drive the other four to USB 4.0, I believe. Sharing PCIe 5.0 lanes is a waste of PCIe lanes as far as speed is concerned. The M.2_1 drive on my MB is really 'blazing fast'. Because it doesn't share lanes with the 5.0 PCIe_1 x16 (graphic card slot). Goodluck with your queeste.

Hi Leo! Thanks for the review! Is this MB worth it over the non E board of the same line?

As for what to use in those bottom two PCIe slots… A 10 Gbps NIC is a hard requirement for me and the bottom slot is perfect for one.

Excellent review but I do wish you'd gone further and tested the fit of secondary expansion cards. I run 10 Gb networking so it's an immediate no-buy issue if a 4-slot GPU blocks that x4 slot. Or if using a card in that slot negatively affects the temperatures of a 4-slot GPU. BTW I class a budget board as under £100.
@canarychrome701220 күн бұрын
You would be lucky to get the box for £100 the way prices are in the last 12 months. I agree, I used to think that way too. but a budget board now seems closer to £200.
@SentaDuck20 күн бұрын
It was a little mistake in the video but the bottom gen3 slot is actually x4 not x2. He probably got it mixed up with the X870 non-E Aorus Elite.

Certainly not a bad board at all. However, I’m going to stick with the MSI Carbon. I like the slightly better build quality and features, as well as the bios. Plus, it’s a Leo 9/10 😂💯

@@ziadalshiekhomar4299 Because the PCIE 16 5.0 does not share lanes with any PCIE nVME ssd. The M.2_1 has its own 4 PCIE Lanes to the CPU.
@devonjohnson750120 күн бұрын
Not having to share lanes is a nice feature, but modern gfx cards can't saturate a PCIe 4 x16 slot, let alone a PCIe 5 x16 slot with twice the speed as gen 4, so the bandwidth should be fine.

I had ordered a Gigabyte x870e aorus elite, in the end, I cancelled it and went for ASRock. They have the best of lineups this season for motherboards.

LOL - whom uses SATA based 2.5" drives these days - well, I do. My NAS is full of them, my main PC has 4 of them (plus an additional NVMe drive and (*GASP*) a DVD writer), etc, etc. Anyways, that's a solid looking board for the money - so I can safely move to having two NVMe drives with that board, keep 3 of the SATA drive's and the DVD writer. Def think it's a fair price, they made very good choices for trade offs.

I am not liking the idea of the proprietary plugin Wi-Fi antenna. I replaced my stock one with one that was more stable than the cheap one that came with the motherboard and kept falling over. I was then also surprised by the stronger signal. This would only work for me if that plug could be adapted to another antenna.

Got a question re the USB4. The specs indicate "2 x USB4® USB Type-C® ports, supporting USB4 and DisplayPort video outputs and a maximum resolution of 3840x2160@240 Hz" Does that mean that one has to use a USB-C to DP adapter and a DP monitor rather than a USBC to HDMI adapter and a HDMI monitor??

about time they removed sata. i basically have the same board but the previous x670 model and it has 4 m.2 slots and ive populated it , one of the drives even has linux on it all i am saying is that 4 m.2 is fantastic so for me there's absolutely no need for sata any more.
