My 25 takeaways (notes I took) from this great conversation: 1. Recovery is the process of letting go. 2. Realize there is nothing wrong with you. TMS is a part of everyday life, for everyone. 3. I am a different person for having gone through this TMS experience. 4. Apply indifference to social situations. The benefit of going through the TMS experience is learning that I don’t have to have everyone liking me. I can be my own person. 5. Recovery is the process of achieving greater and greater indifference. 6. You have to believe you are ok … then exercises like mindfulness and somatic tracking etc. will benefit you. 7. Acceptance is not resignation. 8. The only thing you need to recover is your own neura plastic brain … therefore I possess the fundamental key for getting better. 9. Your brain will wire your dominant thoughts. Think safety and wellness, not brokenness and rumination. 10. Rewiring is never controlled by your conscious brain. You influence your limbic system indirectly. 11. Recovery is regaining the trust to allow our brain to do what it knows how to do. We don’t have to teach it. Trust your brain. It is our minds that mess up our brains. 12. View your body as strong not weak! 13. Digestion is suppressed when you are in fight or flight. 14. Recovery is all about enforcing safety, but safety is different for different people-for some throwing out pills promotes safety, for others it is terrifying. 15. If it feels safer taking pills that is totally fine-that is your path of recovery -but your opinion can change at any moment. 16. Somatic tracking can be the worst experience possible if you are afraid of your symptoms, somatic tracking will make it worse. Once you realize that you are OK, somatic tracking can be really beneficial in soothing your nervous system. 17. Structural abnormalities are not the cause of your symptoms. 18. You can 100% recover from your symptoms. You do not have to have them for the rest of your life-you can get rid of them. Not 90% or 95% -100%. It is possible. 19. If you are 80% better there is no reason to not go to 100% because of neuroplasticity you have the resources and the ability to get to 100% better. 20. The remainder of your pain will go away if you stop caring about it and get on with your life. 20. It makes no sense to talk about remission. It is completely silly because nobody uses it for structural pain. You don’t say I am in remission from structural pain. It is exact same with TMS. If your brain perceives danger, it should demonstrate symptoms. That’s what it supposed to do -that’s not bad. Mind body pain is there for a reason to get us to slow down things like that’s a reason to exist-we are not trying to eliminate the mechanism. We just don’t want it to become chronic. 21. There’s no cure for human pain, but there is a cure for chronic pain (Nicole Sachs) 22. Once you get out of chronic pain practice safety, continue to care for yourself. Continue to have self compassion, rather than going back to the way you lived before . Then it will be highly unlikely that your symptoms will come back. This is a lifestyle change, a change for the rest of your life, or change for the good, for the better. 23. Check in with yourself throughout the day and ask yourself how you’re doing how you’re feeling. 24. If you are always pushing through, you are nowhere near indifference. 25. Two things required to get well: persistence and patience.

I watch these success stories for reassurance and confidence. I am always able to extract useable thoughts ideas methods etc. alot to unpack here. Wonderful segment Im like a guy who wont jump outa the plane cause im not sure the parachute will open Her point: we all think we re THE one! We re not. We dont have a rare yet to be discovered flaw illness

The words of wisdom in this interview is too much to summarise. Thank you! And I have achieved 100% recovery from years of chronic TMS. But as the brain is tricky im currently navigating myself from ringing in my ears called tinnitus, however I know it's TMS in a different coat. So here I find myself going thru a new healing journey for my brain to rewire this TMS can be let go and we are safe. And while my chronic pain TMS is no issue your videos Dan has me getting the important reminders to get my brain to let go this funny TMS perception. Oh PS! I have budging disc and I have no pain once I learnt it was my brain creating perception of pain. 100% is possible and I was in chronic pain.

Definitely helpful to hear Gigi didn't need to change her personality traits to heal bit rather just appreciating the parts of her that created these traits. The IFS model is so helpful to me.

Very grateful for this wonderful conversation! "Recovery is not because of i did or will do, but because of deep knowing i am ok". But for me my meditation helps me experience "I am ok", helps go deeply. Otherwise i can easily be lost in thoughts, emotions and activities, which my mind perceives like danger. It is like symptom reminds me - back home, go deep to "I am ok".

I found that any flare ups are easily connected to moving back into dietary restriction. So, for me, extreme diets = danger. Excuse me while I eat this cookie 😂

Hi , I also live in Bermuda 🇧🇲 I’m currently experiencing tinnitus, ear pain/ burning and sound sensitivity from a loud noise exposure back in February. I went to multiple doctors and had multiple tests which were all clear. I was in a dark place until I found out about TMS . It has definitely given me hope that I will heal. Since finding out about calming my brain I have experienced less and less pain and burning in my ear. I’m trying to stay positive about my tinnitus and sound sensitivity going back to normal as well. 🙏🏼

This is one of my symptom imperatives! Even though it’s still affecting me from time to time, I went to a festival over the weekend and had a severe flare up that faded in less than a day. I’d recommend changing the language that this is not something that happened because of that exposure. That was an in for your nervous system to find a chronic way to alert you. So glad you found this work and wishing you the best ❤

Thank you Dan & Gigi. This was very good. I have recovered from TMS before and I was trying to deal with it this time by continuing normal activities, BUT, by “pushing through”. I like this a lot, and it’s something I’m going to work on. Thank you again 🙏🏼

Thank you both for your wisdom this is great. Since learning about TMS 2 weeks ago I’ve been up and down - but the fact I had the best 3 days of my year immediately after learning about TMS tells me everything I need to know. For the past year I’ve obsessed trying to figure out WHAT I did to cause symptoms, whether it was foods, exercise, etc. naturally after learning about PDP I keep trying to pinpoint the danger when I have a flare. I’ve become less concerned on what the exact danger is I’m perceiving and more focused on the fact it will pass. I’ve went from having 3-7 day flares to ones that only last for a few hours most days. Today I was able to turn around a lot of back pain at work to getting a great weight lifting workout in after work and walking 10k steps with my dog. During the workout and walk I felt completely pain free, which tells me everything I need to know. Even when the symptoms come and go I know it will pass and nothing is wrong, no appointments I need to make or google rabbit holes to go down. I am thankful beyond words for your content Dan it has fast tracked my recovery and I will be a success story soon!

Thanks for sharing that, I’ve been doing good for about 2 weeks then a relapse 2 days ago, I needed this, thanks again You are doing wonderful things for us chronic painers, and soon others will follow in droves once they figure out health and well being don’t come from big pharma and a pill pushing doctor.

So much of this is ringing true for me, so much so I had to comment. Ive just realised that I always think about a get out clause when thinking of the activities ive booked. For instance, going out with friends is always prefaced with me leaving early or coming up with excuses. I never realised it was making my brain unsafe! Of course it was!!! Lightbulb Gigi and Dan! ❤❤

Omg; GiGi is the only other person besides myself that got relief from antibiotics! I was seeing a naturopath doctor who did believe in using medications when needed. I also had IC and urinary retention which caused UTIs; after awhile I tested negative on cultures but she still gave me antibiotics. I felt instant relief also and those days were my best days as well; felt so much better, energetic. Than the relief would wear off and eventually a new infection occured.

This was so helpful to hear Gigi's journey. I have been so focused that something is really wrong with me because my symptoms to continue to get worse, so how could it possibly be tms because I have symptoms 24/7.

Perceived danger initiates symptoms. Fear and attention keep them going. If you have symptoms constantly, then the brain is constantly perceiving danger. Often fear of the symptoms is enough to keep them going. Doubt that you might be really sick is absolutely able to keep the perceived danger high. A great way to reset is to go back to fundamentals. Yes, the cause of CFS is the same as for pains and other symptoms. Perceived Danger. My take: Any dysfunctions are a result of the brain perceiving danger, not the actual cause of the fatigue. I know mcas is tms I have histamine intolerance very similar and I’ve seen a lot of recovery stories from mcas mostly from dnrs but all tms modalities heal

I’m so glad I found your content and as I’m cooking I’m on the carnivore diet. I’ve been on it over a year. I was listening to peoples fears and how it controls our digestion system and just our whole body in general and it got me wondering does that follow suit that I may be scared of eating plants and fruits and anything other than carnivore and I would re-introduce them without fear with my body and brain be fine and does this also work for believing that I’m fine and have no depression in our anxiety that I have to conquer💁‍♀️💁‍♀️😁😁

Really fantastic when you can take it in, but when you’re feeling stuck then what? I really trying but because i am so freaking out of al the symptoms then soothing isn’t working 😔. It like I pushing a mountain al day long. So again Howe to stop being afraid?

Congratulations for making those vídeos ! Too bad though, my depression - installed BEFORE the leg pains - is in the brain ITSELF like in anybody else with this problem - , wich turns the process of rewiring the brain an herculeous task, to say the least. When there wasn't the depression - 2 years ago more or less- , and it was very very mild, I was able to overcome the ciática pain and keep walking. Now with depression stronger - even to write this post is not so easy - the task to rewire the brain is almost impossible. I say 'almost' in order not to tell my brain that is 'impossible ' and therefore the brain obey this command. I'm on medication recently, hoping and praying that will improve the depression and thus makes the rewiring more efficient if so. The depression, I believe, is independent of the pain but when I walk for a while and the sensations of burning behind the legs begin to hurt, it triggers even more the depression. I didn't want to fall, so to speak, in the vicious cicle of what triggers what but I strongly believe that the depression is triggered by the depression....even though the depression is present even when it doesn't hurt. Sorry for the long message...it is a despair ask for help. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read it Dan !

Depression is often deep sadness plus no hope of recovery. Get some hope and the depression can lift. I would encourage you to tell yourself a story that indicates you CAN eliminate your symptoms despite this feeling of depression. What I find is that with consistent messages of safety can reverse chronic pains. And when that lifts, the depression also fades away too. There is no downside to deciding this will work for you. Please hang in there. Without going into details, I can assure you that there IS hope for recovery from depression (I have intimate experience with severe, debilitating depression). Your despair is completely understandable. Do your best to follow Dan's advice, and also to seek out a therapist near you that can help guide you through. It's like Gigi said, you weren't born with depression. Hang in there.

My main symptom is pain when walking however this pain has now spread throughout my whole body but more mild on the top half. I can walk way more than I could a the start of this year but my left leg feels so stiff and tight and my right legs goes in and out of feeling this. All the tests are normal. I feel crazy. I have a bunch of other symptoms but I stopped taking about everything for the last 4 months bc I’m tired of looking crazy, just dealing with pain alone at 22.

I actually do believe anxiety is behind my symptoms but my doctor just wants to give me a pill - I am literally at his office begging for help sometimes (regarding my anxiety and physical pain) and it’s like just stop thinking about it - I feel gaslit as he tells me the pain isn’t there, it’s in my head but that’s not how it works (I’m a training psychologist), I haven’t spoke to anyone about what’s happening to me for months and I think that’s also adding to my issues. Have you seen pain that mainly occurs during movement? I have several other symptoms too. Sounds a lot like Rebecca who you did an update with too. Sorry for dumping!

How do you know if something is really wrong or it’s a tms? I’m talking debilitating couch bound pain and symptoms. I have had this for 5 years started by injury ..pulling and burning from head throughout the torso back to front stiff throughout my entire spine it’s bad. This is why I’m skeptical because this started with injury

I was told that eating specific foods causes my immune system to attack my body. This causes incredible eating and food fear. So do I avoid these foods for fear my body is attacking itself when I do, or do I eat them anyway? Which will probably cause fear that I will be getting sicker or my body attacking itself. So much fear. This is where the medical advice is stuck in my “what if” thinking.

Hi Dan, just another question🙏 apperantly my optometrist thinks my eye symptoms are because of a visual burnout after 3 years of anxiety/ stress. Last year my eyes are weird blurry and out of focus etc. I already told you about it..... The optometrist says it can ONLY recover from visual burnout, when i do brain/ eye training...but i am so in doubt....this all came from stress... so i would think it could recover itself when i feel relaxed again. In other words.... I have this brain / eyes processing problem now, and the cause is anxiety and stress. Would you think the brain is able to resolve issues like this itself? Is the brain able to fix it all by itself? Nothing is broken, just hyperstimulated and also tired of me being hyperstimulated... ...what do you think...

Often, stress and fear cause muscle tension. Muscle tension in the eye area can cause the eyeballs to be misaligned which can cause dizziness. When we lower the fear and stress, I do believe the brain can loosen the tension. Is this the answer for you? I'm not sure, but to me, this makes a lot of sense. Just to back up Dan’s comment. Due to stress, anxiety, TMS, hypersensitivity etc. I too had blurred vision with dizziness along with many other symptoms. But once I listened to Dan and implemented his teachings my vision is now completely back to normal. Don’t lose hope that this will happen for you too.

What if you can’t convince yourself you’re safe? I have been trying for so long and nothing seems to be working. Pelvic pain is very traumatizing to me and I don’t know how to convince my brain that everything is ok.

For sure, this is very difficult to go through. First step is to eliminate doubt about the cause. KNOW that TMS/PDP is what is causing your pain. From there it is a matter of teaching the brain we are safe. A big part of that is our reaction to the pain. If we react with fear each time, the knowledge of what is causing it will not over-ride the fear response perpetuating the perceived danger. This interview is an absolute💡Dan, may I ask you a question? You talk very much about the link between anxiety and tms. But your approach for tms in almost completely opposite to a, let's say, traditional way to heal anxiety 🤯 Let me explain: Ten years ago I was diagnosed with panic disorder and health anxiety. I tried everything, even AD. Sometimes it felt better, sometimes it became worse. But through all my «healing» journey in therapy (with or without medication), I was told that I am broken, I have some issues going on in my nervous system, maybe it's genetic, maybe I'm too sensitive, so on. Then two years ago I found myself with a tremendous pain in my body. I passed another year visiting all the medical doctors, tried every type of massages possible and once I even had a period in which I received thirty injections of painkillers a day directly in my back. And the result? It all became worse. So now I have tms and panic attacks, hooray! 🤣 Everybody keeps telling that the only way to go through a panic disorder is a CBT. But once I started practicing this type of therapy, the level of anxiety increased for 200%. And now I think I understand why it happend. It's because this CBT program I started was a constant message of «you are the problem, you are a neurotic person, you must get rid of your neurosis, you must debate all the thoughts in order for them to became appropriate and "healthy", you must do different types of exercises and journaling not everyday, but EVERYTIME YOU GET ANXIOUS throughout the day!» So here I am, feeling more anxious than ever in my life, with a constant sense of shame for being not enough. But your approach, Dan, seems do be perfect opposite to this. I mean, constant messages of safety and knowing that I'm okay - is totally different from «healing journey», bad brain chemicals and fighting against neurosis. Do you have any patients with panic attacks? What do you recommend to them? Thank you ❤

The only thing I disagree with Gigi is when personally traits are protectors.. in a sense they are but for me they are old learned coping skills/ mechanisms that once you are recovered don’t need to have! Of course you can stay sensitive, friendly and empathetic but pleasing is a red flag 🚩 for me.. just my idea on it, just the same with perfectionism! We can alter perfectionism that pushes us beyond health into optimalism, which is less stressful for mind/ body and spirit.. Just my idea on it.🌻

@@PainFreeYou it’s a discussion I had with my husband.. for me personaliy is something you are born with/ your identity.. personality traits are coping skills you learn as a young child to not lose attachment from your care- givers.. those pleasing, pushing, perfectionism traits set me on path of exhaustion and chronic illness.. once I understood that, I know now that that was my truth as a child but very harmful as adult.. my personality will always be kind, empathetic and achieving and organized but not in the destructive way I learned as a kid if that makes sense Dan? So that’s what I said to my husband as well: I can’t change my past story, nor my identity but I can work on my personality traits.. just my 💡 on it. Have a lovely day!☀️💕💕💕

You’re right our core beliefs (that others heavily contributed to + for which have been largely unconscious) may not actually serve us once we become conscious of these. It’s the “awareness” of these and the “allowing” without resistance/judgment. CHOICE is ALWAYS then available to us which is the gift. Gigi was perhaps suggesting that to battle with our personality traits is another form of feeling unsafe. She seems to like her traits + therefore embracing them is safety for her. For me, like it is for you I think, it’s more about a decision point/opportunity to “choose” a different mindset journey while not generating unsafe responses.

Having to be and behave like someone who agrees with everything in order to survive and be the best version of myself just to deserve the love, I should have gotten organically.. that’s not who I am deep down, authentically.. And when I can not be authentic,that’s where disease/ conflict can enter in my life..Unlearning these behaviors is crucial for my personal growth and healing. Also, I’m a massage therapist. And after a few years of noticing the same patterns of pain, over and over again from clients, I stopped asking people “so, what hurts today?” And started asking “so, how are you today?” I never tell people to relax on the table, never tell them they’re tight or have a lot of knots or trigger points. It just intuitively felt wrong to say that to someone. It is so common to have a client unconsciously stiffen up as I’m working on a part of the body. And I know it’s just an unconscious protective habit of theirs. And instead of asking them to relax their arm or leg or whatever, I let them be tight. Because it’s not a problem. Curious to see how my practice evolves with all the benefits I’m now personally experiencing with tms.
