Schemes and coaching is important. With defense Personnel matters. Cuban traded 2 of their main defnesers for Kyrie . Personnel... Same if player's can't shoot 3', they wont be a 3 pt shooting team regardless of scheme

Kidd is the problem, watch the games. there is no offensive scheme outside of luka and kai iso while everyone spots up. you have players on the fast break running to the 3 instead of getting the easy 2. the mavericks had a top defense during their 7 game win streak when they were playing big line ups but now continue to play small ball. the mavericks are not full of defensive aces but they have solid to good defenders in lively, Gafford, pj, djj, and Exum. The issue is that Kidd puts lineups consisting of luka, kai, thj, maxi, and djj. 3 below average defenders and Kidd expects two defenders to not only cover their man but protect the others. Kidd needs to have 3-4 of the best defenders on the team on the floor at all times. but too often Kidd puts minus defenders on the court.

Mavs homer here watch every game. Its the horrible lineups and the coaching staff doesn't reinforce how to communicate on TEAM defense. 1on1 defense they do relatively well. They frequently miss rotations and love to play a small ball 5 with luka kyrie and tim hardaway on the floor. The coaching staff is braindead make no mistake. Plenty of other great teams figured out how to have 1 to 2 bad to mediocre defenders and figured it out... Hell the last two championships sure as hell did (denver, golden state)

Luka is a lazy defender. He definitely had the ability and the talent to actually be much better defensively, at least to a point where he isn’t a consistent liability. He lacks consistent effort on defense due somewhat to his high usage on offense. Those white boys in Miami have been known as defensive liabilities, but you cannot question their effort defensively, and their knowledge of where they need to be, or when they should rotate, and they get better each year because their coach holds them accountable. You can question skill and size but if you're questioning the effort, principles, and schemes, it's a coaching issue. So, Dallas doesn't play defense? Blame the coach. Gil always serves as an apologist for offense-only players.

How he was a player vs how he is as a coach is different. He keeps on saying our offense is our defense, and it shows, and it seems he lets his players try to figure out what they need to do rather than coach them into what they should do. You see the players struggle to figure out their position and schemes, that's both coaching and lack of skill. Especially on fast breaks, they look completely frozen.

The season they went to the conference finals, they were a top 15 defense I believe. During the 7 game winning streak this season(albeit the schedule wasn't that hard at this time) they were the number one defense for 2 weeks. If you look it up, no bad defensive team at any point of the season was a top 5 defense for a 2 week span this season, it doesn't happen. If you watch the games, the Mavs schemes are to switch everything, help off of corners, and zone, schemes that rely heavily on help side defense and effort, things the Mavs are extremely inconsistent on. I don't think with the current personell, Kidd's schemes are a formula for wins. And of course Luka needs to be better on defense in terms of effort, that would help, but it doesn't solve anything by itself, he's not the sole problem if you watch the games, for instance, I've never seen a screen that Josh Green has NOT died on.
