Interesting, I was in Vancouver in '86 I believe it was when a jewelry store was robbed on Granville St. Granville St. Is a high end shopping area with a cobblestone street that only buses and taxis are allowed. There is above ground and underground shopping. I was above ground on the sidewalk with a friend just checking out the area as I'd never seen anything like it where i had grown up, when suddenly there were cops and sirens everywhere. At the time I didn't know what had happened. I heard on the news that it was a jewelry store robbery. Fast forward several years I watched a documentary type show called "masterminds" and it was about this guy and all his robberies he'd gotten away with. I was watching it with my girlfriend and I told her I was there when this jewelry store robbery went down, she didn't believe me lol Then several more years later the fifth estate did an episode about this guy and that very robbery. I was right there when it went down :) I was literally about 30 meters from the jewelry store when it was Robbed.

Canada is very, very lenient and these crimes in the USA where he came from would get him Colorado Super Max and multiple life terms. YOU point a loaded gun in my face, and the media narrator repeats ad nauseum that "no shots were ever fired" completely misses the point of having a gun in your face. It's induced trauma for all the low paid retail clerks this guys and his buddies made miserable. The employees will be dealing with this guys moves on them for years. And their families.

Agree how our Canadian justice system is way too lenient. It’s always about money there too. Overcrowded prisons in Canada sounds like a joke to me. Maybe overcrowding them, if that’s even possible here, with a lot less rights and less costs for the violent ones is exactly what we need to make them think before doing.?. Instead they get to go to jail to sober up, get free meals, free health and and therapy benefits, free rent and lots of socializing benefits. I’d rather see violence punished much more than stealing from the rich that are covered by insurance way more than any employee is covered if injured, shot or killed. This rich vs the poor (definitely not Robinhood) story seems to be why some talk cheap as if he’s some kind of hero. As for the gun in the face trauma, I get it, but it’s something that can be dealt with a lot more than violent crimes. It’s also a career choice with well known risk. Never deserved but is such a career worth the risk.?. Can’t say this guy is anyone to be impressed by as he could’ve easily used his brain to do some actual good for himself, his family and others close to him. He comes across as a cold narcissist, boarder line sociopath here that chose his career for notoriety reasons without a care for anyone around him…not someone you want around your children. Pretty interesting story from an interesting time though.

Why is this an issue......other than the fact that a gun is used......which is likely to induce trauma in people where the robbery occurs......the money......BIG DEAL......the owners have far too much money anyway. If they paid the tax they should we would have a lot more available for social programs which all people should have.....not just a select few......if they're not paying the taxes they should perhaps this is justified.
