Actually the intro to Mega Man 4 (the first game to have the charge shot) refers to it as the mega buster in the opening cutscene before you press start. Before that it was indeed called the plasma cannon and that's why your weapon selection abbreviation for it is P.

I do think it's a nice touch that the Robot Master portraits on the select screen all face "inward"--Sonic Man is on the left side and faces right, Dyna Man is on the right and faces left, and Volt Man is at the top and faces down. Also I love that Wily's fortress in this game looks like it's just some warehouse.

I totally respect the creator of the game cause like you said, this was pretty much a passion project of his that he did pretty much all by himself. I agree with you though. The game is bad.

Being able to program a game is a very different thing to being able to design one. We shouldn't blame the guy who made it for fun, but instead Capcom as they licensed it without correcting the various design flaws.

While I think context doesn't fix a game, most fangames are junk even if they are passion projects, MegaMan on DOS is mediocre or passable, I don't consider it to be that bad. Specially for the time

Honestly this game wouldn’t be that bad if it had some more time in the oven it seems like a solid tech demo but with a little bit more polish I could see it actually work as a game

It's the same game, but AVGN was playing it in four-color CGA mode. That's why everything was blue and pink.

fun fact on the sequel, capcom had some input. 3 was released around the time of its development, and capcom wanted the games creator to name it 3 to tie into that. it was originally going to be megaman 2.

I remember when I was loving the Mega Man series and really wanting a copy. My dad one day came home with this DOS version. All I remember is loading it up and the thing just wouldn't work right on my machine at the time. It was disappointing cause I really thought it would be awesome! Nowadays I think my computer was trying to save me ... The next game is about the same but would love to try the X title done by the same guy!

I was actually really lucky. I found a loose copy of one of these at a retro store nearby, for just a buck. I don't have any real way of playing it at the moment, more so just using emulators, but at least I have the real thing. I've always been fascinated by this bizarre entry. To think this is the same hi-tech expressions that made games like Harley's humongous adventure, one of my favorite underrated gems.

I've heard plenty about this game from people like the Gaming Historian and I believe LGR as well, but out of all the people who have already discussed this game, including the Angry Video Game Nerd, none have thoroughly examined the game start to finish the way you did. They explain how the game came to be, mention how some parts of the game were built the way they were, but then leave it at that.

4:00. If you watch the PC long play post of the game...you’ll see that it might actually be possible to get through that part without taking damage. You have to time your jump right when the enemy is close to you...jump over it and run.

I love how the skull gate at 9:40 looks like it's rolling it's eyes at this game as well. when it comes to 8:40 would the sonic sub weapon help with those insects, if you have it? Also have you heard of Megaman Dos remake?

I owned this game, because my dad bought a 286 for like $3,000 in the mid-80’s and it was going to play all the games we wanted it to, damn it. So we had this, and we had TMNT… and TMNT for DOS was so bad that you literally couldn’t get past level 3 without a cheat code that we had no way of knowing back then. At least you could beat this game!

To be fair, "Mega Buster" didn't refer Mega Man's basic arm cannon until quite a bit through the series' life. For the longest time, it was only used to refer to the Charge Shot.

That's because Hi-Tech wasn't a video game company, it was a software company that should NEVER have developed the games themselves. They probably did good work on screen savers and children's printing software, but PC or console, their games were trash. Their magnum opus was anything with Tom and Jerry, and even then, meh.

The plasma cannon was the original Megaman weapon. He only got the mega Buster in Megaman 3.

It wasn’t. In some places it was referred to as the “Arm Cannon” but even then, it was never the plasma cannon (which this game misspells as “canon”) also its been retconned but the mega buster being used to refer to the charging version of the weapon was introduced in 4.

I'd almost feel bad for the game being made by one guy. I'd say that's the best way to put it, a tech demo. If they were going to officially release it, they should have brought in a team to play test and polish it. But it's Hi-tech, so they just decided to throw out a licensed game to get money from 7 year olds' parents, so why bother putting quality into something? Also, you should totally check out their Rescue Rangers game. It's laughably bad and lazy.

Thankfully, this wasn't the first, but I did play this game and... Wow, what horrible memories. I thank my lucky stars I started with Mega Man 3 (on NES, of course).
