Why not have Dan Hurley as Head Coach and then JJ as the Assistant Coach so that JJ can help Dan get used to the NBA, while JJ gets his experience being a coach for the first time? If Hurley doesn't work out, Lakers can fire him and promote JJ as Head Coach after he gets experience being a coach.

Every persons journey is different and there is a lot of talent in the league now, but I totally get why they brought it up. Billy Donovan is still coaching in the league and also won two titles in college as a head coach. Brad Stevens was the Celtics coach as recently as 2021, so it’s not like they’re bringing up all old stuff. College and NBA are different and there is a reason that there haven’t been many to successfully make the jump.

Gil was correct on his assessment. I feel Coach felt, "a bird in the hand, is worth more than two in the bush." He had guaranteed money and he coaches kids who will play for him. I think the NBA has players who earn well deserved monet but that kind of money will swell your head and your coach earns 2, 3 times less.. coach made the right decision, and your take didn't age well.

It’s not happening. It’s just a way for the Lakers to claim “they tried “ but “had no choice but to hire JJ.” They’re just trying to cover their (and LeBron’s) asses when JJ doesn’t win. Plus Hurley is looking for a raise from UConn, thus if he plays along with this charade he gets a ton of leverage while negotiating with UConn.

College coaches struggle with coaching pros right away because they mostly out recruit other coaches during their careers. Kenyon makes a good point. Everybody is a top player relative to what college coaches had in college when they get to the pros. And Gil makes a rare good point. As Chip Kelly found out when he tried his college tactics with pro football players.

None of these analysts consider the team the college coach came into the NBA to coach. I don't think any other college to NBA coach started with two top-15 players and an already playoff team to start with. One of the two being a top-two player ever, including his IQ of the game.
