Gina Lopez, tireless environmental activist and former secretary of the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources, has been named the recipient of the 2017 Seacology Prize!
Last year, Ms. Lopez stood up to powerful mining interests in the Philippines and ordered a ban on all open-pit mines there, operations that were contaminating rivers and coastal waters and contributing to a major public health crisis. This principled action cost Lopez her position when her appointment was rejected by a legislative panel, several members of which had ties to the mining industry. But her advocacy for her home country's unique ecosystems and most vulnerable communities continues.
