Leo Fender invented the Precision Bass guitar in the 1950’s. It has a specific design and a unique pickup configuration. It has been massively accepted and played by musicians the world over. Today, there are dozens of companies that make an exact replica of the Fender Precision Bass. These are widely accepted and played. There is no backlash or negative comments from musicians about these basses being copies of the Fender Precision. Nobody cares. I don’t fully understand the heated negative comments from the watch community about companies such as Ginault or Steinhart and their production of watches in the style of the Rolex Sub. These watches don’t attempt to present themselves as Rolex and are offered at a very affordable price point to customers who cannot pay the astronomical price of a Rolex which, it may be argued, is significantly overpriced. The polar caps are melting and the oceans are filled with plastic. Who cares if the Ginault looks like a Rolex? It says Ginault on the dial. To each his own. Direct the hatred elsewhere.

Exactly the instrument argument is always my argument about ginault. I own an ocean rover, which I love. I also pay a tokai les Paul “copy”, for the money both the watch and the guitar are incredible.

I agree 100%. I also think it's really bizarre that anyone gets their panties in a twist over homages to vintage pieces. You want a Milsub or Paul Newman in good condition? You'll have to pay upwards of $100K, if you can even find one. You pay that kind of money for a watch, it's guaranteed to spend more time in a safe deposit box than on your wrist! There's absolutely nothing wrong with homage watches. They fill the gap in the market between supply and demand.

I love that this is a big middle finger to Rolex. Do Rolex have the cool red hand? No. Did Rolex abandon the awesome 16610 case size for something with stupid lugs which makes it look stupid on a rubber strap or NATO? Yes. Can you walk into an AD with a fist full of dollars and actually buy a sub? No. Well F you Rolex. I am cheering for Ginault here.

90+% of the quality, 10% of the price. Controversy aside, these are a slam dunk combination of quality and value for money. The 2nd Gen Ocean Rover has SW200 in it along with ceramic bezel and improvements to the bracelet.

Dial & Dram And let me tell you John from Ginault is a great guy. I go by quality not rumors. Could care less on speculations about his past. The watch oozes quality and that’s all I care about. People should worry about how companies like Rolex make you pay for their advertising. Instead they’re picking on a very good micro brand that could teach major watch companies a thing or two.

I love the Ocean Rover and I really couldn’t care less about the nontroversies surrounding it. It’s an excellent watch at a damn good price and that’s all that matters to me. My OR2 is in the mail and I can’t wait to receive it.

I love my Ginault Ocean-Rover. I have had it since May 2019 and it keeps time better then one of my Valjoux 7750 whatches. I'm signed up for a Ocean-Rover II :D

I love the clean no date dial. I also like the hour hand more than the mercedes sign hand. Actually I love the whole thing and I'm not even a submariner fan.

I'm so sick of rolex's arrogance and snob type behavior they brought all this themselves by that style of behavior and IN MY OPINION deserve it facts are its a great time piece that seems to hold it's value with excellent quality and craftsmanship and if you're unable to afford a rolex or don't want to sink that kind of money in ONE FREAKIN watch this is a way to own something that IN MY OPINION gives you something VERY CLOSE to that same feel. Been a fan of the brand since I first saw it even before I knew about any controversy it's a beautiful sub homage. Everyone would love to own a Rolex but either can't afford it or can't get one at retail so they filled a void that's 90% of that at a fraction of the price.

I am sure it is a nice watch and perfectly functional. I would just prefer to get an original design if i am paying 1500 dollars for a watch. I think when you pay more than the few hundred dollars it costs to make a watch you should be getting something unique. At the price that Steinhart charges a homage watch seems more acceptable. It’s still a fine watch though.

when it comes to "paying homage" to the rolex sub, i think this one is pretty good in an almost unlimited field of wannabees. it really comes down to detail and execution. this one might be in the sweet spot for many, but the hands ruin the effect for me. the mercedes hands are,for me, an essential part of this most famous and somehow elegant workhorse design. nobody does it like rolex, and even they have stepped in it with the new case and bracelet...

If you are one of the commenters who have such animosity towards such a well made time piece regardless of whether it's an homage and/or simply not a "Rolex", perhaps you're more concerned with your image and other's image of you and what watch you wear rather than the love of horology. Seriously, take away the branding of the Ginault and you have a near Rolex like watch, no way around it. If you can't appreciate that and want to knock it, you're probably the same type of person that would be happy with a Daniel Wellington that was branded "Rolex". I guess the level of shallowness of some individuals know no bounds. It simply is spectacular, controversy not withstanding.

It's easy to appreciate the quality, it seems great. But building a quality watch doesn't take any creativity or ingenuity. They just made a copy. There is no design prowess at all. If you are buying a watch like this you clearly love Rolex's design and prestige because this is nothing more than a copy. Why not just save your money and buy the real thing? Spending money on these watches is ridiculous no mater what you buy. There is no need for any of these watches. You can tell time anywhere. If you spend $1299 on this it'll be worth nothing once it's used. If you spend $7k on a 5-digit used Submariner, it'll be worth $7k 5 years from now, maybe more. That's simply a smarter way to spend money.

This watch is as good or better than any other homage or dive watch on the market, including Rolex. Please note this watch is a Rolex milspec homage due to the non MBZ handset. I have had my Ocean Rover no date with sand lume for a number of years and other than the bezel not being ceramic (as they apparently now offer) it is virtually perfect.

It is agreeable to look upon. My eyes don't see this as a submariner replica. There are many obvious differences. Because if it was just a ripoff of the ceramic era models , I'd be bored as f.... upon seeing this. But beware of the pos movements they put in replicas. Has anyone opened a Ginault?

Such an horrible review. When pointing out certain aspects or characteristics of the watch it would be best to show them or try to give the viewer a feel for them. Too much talking and very little content. No dimensions, no close ups, no details, no lume. It seems more like an attemp to ''excuse'' the company that made it knowing what happened.

Your comment sounds like someone who was one of the first ones to jump on Let’s Hate Ginault band wagon. And as for “knowing what happened”, what exactly did happen? In the infamous online ‘exposé” of Ginault if you take away the rumors that were thrown in and the authors conjecture you’re left with circumstantial evidence that the watch parts are probably sourced from China (extremely high quality parts, I might add... oh, and let’s not forget that every micro brand that comes along basically does the same thing) and the guy who runs the company is probably using a different name.

Really, another Submariner rip off. I have never seen such a nauseating love fest review in my life.. There are plenty of micro brands that build unique watches to choose from. If you can't swing a Submariner how about a Seamaster or a real bargain, a Oris Aquis.

@@jimmyv.495 there is no current Rolex Model that looks like the Ginault. The watch is offered at 1/6 of the price of a Rolex which is approx. the manufacturing cost of a Rolex. And besides that, you ACTUALLY can buy an Ocean Rover while you can't buy a steel Submariner from an AD. The Steinhart is very nice. But it does not even get close to the build quality of a Ginault.
