Today we take the AWD, Subaru powered Miata to a high speed, mixed surface rallycross event. The course starts in a small paved oval, then goes onto a grass field, and then a gravel road. The AWD Miata ripped and did AMAZING!

Depends on even if he could feasibly use one all-wheel drive cars tend to be funky with hydro e brakes causing issues with the center diff if the transmission permits it it's probable that he can use one but without testing or research it's kind of a toss-up he could end up making the car much harder to drive I know Ken blocks escort has issues with its hydro a break because it ends up locking all four tires when he pulls it because it has no center diff or something like that
@pitveau

@@soupysgarage1020 ken car is very custom, while the rally miata is also very custom the drive train is that of a standard subaru, I'm sure aftermarket solution to most of the problem already exists, the biggest thing behind him not fitting it in my opinion is price and time( he probably has other things higher in his todo list)

Totally agree, many other youtubers would’ve built this cool build, used it once in a real rally, and then would announce in their next video they have a rally beater. Then the cool one of a kind totally capable rally car would never be seen again or used as a prop. I sometimes get frustrated on how slow he is going but then I remember this car doesn’t have easily replaceable parts, even the fenders are custom, I’m happy he’s using it and learning.
@SailingFrolic
@SailingFrolic 4 жыл бұрын
Caleb, I'm noticing a lot of difference between your outside and inside wheel speeds on revs. Maybe take a look at diff? Also, I saw in video you seem to be struggling with weight transfer in the rally Miata. Try using braking and throttle to shift the car's weight balance more into the turns to prevent the plowing you're getting. Remember. Your track instinct is to try and grip in an AWD car. Don't. Loose is fast. Smooth is fast. Weight transfer will set up your car for the next corner so you have less to worry about. Keep going Caleb. I love seeing you improve broski. Edit: you might want to adjust your rear sway bar. I'm seeing your rear end refuse to swing out too much. That Evo was killing it and your car should be doing as good if not better.
@_Gingium_
@_Gingium_ 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I definitely noticed the rear end wasn't too happy to get sideways. On those long turns it would get sideways for a second, then straighten up again. I actually dont have ANY sway bars on the car, but I think the main issue is that its an open diff. I can get an rear LSD and that should help make the car much happier to get sideways and stay sideways! Either way, thanks for the help!

You should stay in a lower gear, even if you have to bounce off of rev limiter it will turn the car more. It’s a very unnatural feeling but with awd throttle means more steering angle. also left foot break more so you can stay on throttle. Love the progression!
@zevi2000

I also think it looks perfect. The car sits at a good level as is. It may need to be lowered like an inch for some courses which is where adjustable coilovers would be a good idea in the future. But the current set up looks perfect with how light and low the CG is and needing to have the exhaust manifold clear the bumps.

You should do a compound turbo for your next turbo set-up. The small turbo will spool quicker at low rpm so it can spool up the bigger turbo at higher rpm, which causes the car to rev up to redline faster.

Little advice for upgrades, Sway Bar First, then Coil-Overs, (Tires are optional at this point) make any minor suspension upgrades you want, like bushings, control arms and whatnot then install the Differential, and finally the Turbo Kit. Another bit of advice, learn how to flick your car with your foot break before attempting it with a Hydro so as to not form any bad habits... Never mind... it takes a totally different skill set to flick an AWD with an E-Brake. But still knowing how to do a Finnish Flick the old way couldn't hurt.

You are in the beginning of learning and you are doing great. And you have the upgrades on the car in mind already. I would try to find a LSD diff to the rear axles as soon as possible. Also if possible find a gearbox or if possible swap the gears on the one you have. To gear ratios that are shorter and more even. As you are so much in both 1 and 2 gear that much on the tracks you are on to. The other thing is getting more seat time which you will get when you think it's fun. One thing that I see in this video that you can save a lot of time from. Is to prepare and setup the car before you take the corners. If you watch between you and that EVO in this video you see that you do the adjustments in the middle of the corner and the EVO drives through the whole corner. So adjust your speed before the corner starts. Have the right gear for it and also if it's a little tighter practice to counter-flick the car so you come into in drift. And also the most important is to be on the throttle already. Next is to get comfortable and know when you can left foot breaking in the corner. So you don't loose boost and also so you don't oversteer so you spin the car. Cause deaccelerate and breaking in a corner going fast with an AWD is a no no thing to be doing. If I'm not wrong you have a snow and ice winter coming where you live. It's a perfect time to practice the AWD technique in lower speeds and it's fun. Look up if you have some frozen lake events around you. Those are so awesome to drive on. To sum it up is some car upgrades and some AWD technique practice. And you will feel that you and the car improves a lot and very fast. I live in Sweden and had an Audi S4 1992 5-cylinder turbo engine during a couple of years. And I love to drive on ice and snow surfaces. Also fun to drive on gravel roads at night but it's best to have a dedicated car for that and be on the track or driving in WRC like rally events with closed off roads on the SS stages. Maybe even see if you can find a rally driving school event. Or if you get to know one with a lot of experience with driving AWD rally cars. And ask if he can be your mentor. The Rally Miata seems a lot of fun to drive. And you should have no problems to find rally parts for the Subaru drivetrain. If you are going to a ice/snow event. Get you some studded winter tires that has as small width as possible. It's like the other way around from tarmac tires. Like 175/70-195/70 on a size of rims that fit your car. I had 205 on the S4 cause of the higher weight on 16" wheels. And man it's fun to drive AWD on the snow/ice surface when you get it to grip great.

So fire! Love the new wheel/tire, much more rally car vibe! Your progressing so fast. Do I also smell a hydraulic handbrake in future?!

You need to be using e brake for the hair pins and tight turns to carry momentum

Have you ever thought of changing the awd power ratio and have a rear-biased setup for more oversteer and easier ability to slide

Needs a hydro for those hairpins.

I would highly recommend to put the transmitters I guess one of the first things to do it would help you and probably stop the problem with that

Love to see the miata ripping it out there, but it warms my heart to see an evo actually rallying.

Looks brilliant. Goes great except of the breaking 😂. Only thing missing is a leather bonnet strap so it doesn’t flap about quite so much at the front!!

Idk much of anything about rally cross but I think a hydro e brake might help in those tighter turns

Look into stiffening the suspension. Any sort of jumps you take, without some sorta of bypass for a stiffer setting will either blow out the coil, destroy the top hat, bottom mount, or the actual chassis.
