Don't hire a maid who is young and pretty, because when you find your girlfriend, the first thing she will want you to do is fire the maid. Find an experienced middle-aged maid with average looks and make sure that your maid and your girlfriend are two different women. When you hire a live-in maid, you just pay her salary and that's it! If your maid becomes your girlfriend she will expect you to help her family. Other men may have other opinions (and that's OK), but personally I never liked mixing business with pleasure. That would be like a manager starting an affair with his assistant. It totally unbalances the relationship and may give the assistant leverage over the manager. Also don't hire a maid who is related to your wife or girlfriend (I have bad experience with that). Don't take just anyone into your house. Try to hire someone who comes recommended by fellow expats or locals that you are friends with. Ask for a barangay clearance and an NBI clearance to make sure that you are not hiring someone with a criminal record. To some of you this may seem a bit far fetched, but these are really things to take into consideration in countries like the Philippines.

Good video, but incomplete without Part B: Interview with the owner of a Maid Agency discussing "Maid with Benefits" contracted up front rather than backed into accidently. Such a Fig Leaf deal clearly benefits both parties compared to the usual ad hoc "Pay for Play" transactions so common in the Philippines. (Probability that this cannot be readily arranged: Zero.) An unflinching look at prices, options, and arrangements would sharply illuminate How Things Actually Work in Philippines. Insights are so much more valuable than simple reporting of the standard information!

I went through this in 1988 in Honduras when I was a much younger and much more handsome man teaching in Tegucigalpa. A neighbor (lady) recommended a woman to be my maid. She arranged for us to meet at a cafe, and wow, was this girl beautiful. I'm human, so I had to do it. I hired her on the spot. Of course thing changed pretty quick. She was my girlfriend within a couple of weeks. It was not that bad of a deal. She was okay as a girlfriend. And, of course, in time, we broke up. But if you REALLY want good cleaning, cooking, laundry service, etc. you are better off just hiring an older lady you don't find attractive. That is what I did after that. Now I am married to a Filipina living in Antipolo. My wife will never allow another woman in the house to cook and clean. I understand completely.

It gets sticky if you higher a maid who becomes girlfriend or a girlfriend who becomes your maid. I have had a rather awkward experience with this myself and ended up supporting her and three kids for a year or so. I became an ATM to her and her kids. I finally had to break the relationship. She still wants to clean the house for the cash but even that is awkward so I’m trying to discourage that. Looking back she wrangled me into this relationship because she wanted a support system because she had no job. I offered to help her start a business but she always had excuses about why she couldn’t do that. She just wanted me to support her and her three kids. Became very obvious to me. My point is it’s harder here to get out of these situations than it is to get into them. Beware… your wallet and pension attracts these situations and puts you in a vulnerable situation.
@YellowToucan5 ай бұрын
"My point is it’s harder here to get out of these situations". That's because you have a heart Robert (which is great). When dealing with women, regardless of nationality, they count on you becoming emotionally invested (or extremely lustful) which they can then use to their advantage. With women & business....I clip the heart-strings the best I can. A relationship is like partnering in a business, we each have responsibilities we must live up to.

I was raised in a culture of maids as a son of an expat. During my life (4 countries) at my parents' house we had two full-time live-in maids, one full-time non live-in, one full time live-in guard, one full-time non live-in driver, and finally a part-time driver/gardener. One maid was rehired after my parents moved back to that country. A maid (armed guard, driver, etc) is an employee. Our personnel was carefully vetted by corporate including background checks, etc. In Brazil, both our live-in guard and our driver were armed so the scrutiny was higher. The ladies, similarly, were checked and in all countries they were 45+ (and definitely - no beauties at all). Those saying that privacy is an issue, obviously have never lived in such an arrangement. As the employer, you set the limits. A maid, for example, is expected to go into your room to clean, make up the bed, freshen up the bathroom, and on laundry days enter to put away the clothes. Other than those times, staff has no business being in your bedrooms or any other rooms other than their quarters, kitchen, laundry room, or other staff areas. Staff never eats or socializes with you (sure, there will be some chit-chat over an afternoon coffee in the kitchen). If they have any experience (which you should always get - let someone else deal with youthful screw ups), they will know that on day one. Treat staff as staff, but always remember that they are human beings!!! That said, we had a great relationship with all our personnel. One maid had 5 children. We put them all through private local (not expat, but local) schools and college. All were paid above average wages which ensured loyalty (and the wrath of neighbors). All got very generous full pensions for their retirements. I have fond memories of our guard in Brazil; he let me practice my beginner Portuguese with him and I started following his football team - go SPFC!!!

It seems like anything in life... when you try to get too many different uses out of a particular item, you end up with all results being sub-par. Better to have the perfect tool for each job. Hire the maid for her cleaning and cooking skills. Then if you want a little cutie for "other" duties, hire the ideal for that too. Much easier to replace either as required. The trick seems to be not to fall for the maid's attempts to upgrade herself. A moment of weakness one evening and you will have complicated an otherwise ideal situation. Some guys suggest hiring an older, less attractive maid. The problem there is that any moment of weakness now puts you into an arrangement with a less than desirable female. You WILL wake up the next day with regrets. At least if the maid was a young cutie, you might be tempted to let it ride for a while.

It is highly recommended not to get involved with the help. Many of these women are married or separated, which is the same thing. A live-in maid is going to be extremely expensive as you have to provide living quarters and medical and everything else that comes with that. Also, if you don't like the service, then you have a much more difficult time removing your live-in maid . It's better to have a part-time maid service come in a couple of times a week, and then they move on . These are professional cleaners, and you need to respect them. Of course, if you get a girlfriend, she will obviously not want these women coming into the house, and a woman who is traditional will keep her home in order. If she doesn't, then you can send her down the road and contact the maid service and continue on .
@tipigi35705 ай бұрын
"extremely expensive" is very relative imo. If you're paying 10k a month for a live-in maid, and paying for the extra servings of food for her, it might be $400 a month total. If you're surviving on $1.5k a month, then sure $400 is big chunk of that. If you're getting $4k a month in pension, investments, etc. then it's not much at all. I've had sevearl live-in maids, and never had a problem removing them. Of course, if a person were to get into a relationship with a maid, that's a different story (and something I never did).
@eduardomaldonado16475 ай бұрын

Getting ready to sell my house in the USA and heading over to SEA full time. The Dominican culture has many positives but always felt SEA is home. My adult daughter is half Filipino , and lived a short time in CDO. Beautiful culture and people. You nailed it.
Having a maid in the Philippines who cooks, grocery shops, cleans, and massages for $160 per month....and maybe the possibility of benefits?? Why ever get married in the West?? This is way more practical.

The lower cost of living does make hiring people to assist you easier. The added benefit is something single ladies use to hook and reel in a rich foreigner. Back when the US had several 1000 military members stationed in the Philippines just about every single male hired a live-in maid. Many men married their maid before leaving the country.

120 USD a month? I spent that in a week of groceries in Norway, in a slow week. Then again, there is Manilla for the rich and the Philippines for everyone else, which is poverty and misery. The female driver warning is a real thing though. Most get their license in the Philippines without ever driving once. And women are indeed particularly bad at it. I remember teaching one friend how to drive in Norway and SHE HAD A LICENSE.

You know what makes life most affordable? 1. Being able to do your own gardening. 2. Cooking your own food. 3. Cleaning your own home. $5 to $10 eventually adds up. Maybe you think, but it is just 5, or 10 dollars well money is still money. Another amount you gave was $120, so $120 can add up faster than $5 to $10. Regarding myself I cook, and clean, and I been learning how to do gardening as well. There are other things I learned how to do besides what I said! Spending money is easy to do, but saving money can be difficult. People have gone broke, and in debt with the choices they made! If you do not think about saving money then maybe you could eventually go broke, or in debt. I assume you knew what the pros, and cons were before going to the Philippines. Not everyone thinks only about the services a country has to offer new residents. There is more to consider when relocating to a different country!
@GizmoMaltese4 ай бұрын
I depends on your income. If you make $200 / hour, it makes a lot of sense to pay someone $20 / hour to do those chores for you. Also, the greater your income the bigger your home and the more difficult it is to keep clean. Saving money is not always a savings. Time is money. So it depends on how much your time is worth. Spending the little time you have off from work with your kids instead of cleaning has a value.

I had to laugh at the part where you talked about the "job ad" and how it sounded like a dating ad. I was in Marinduque, in a little place called Tagum, where my wife worked as a teacher. She wasn't my wife at the time, we had just met in person after years of along communication. We stopped at one of the many canteens, this one being at the corner of a road split. There was an ad on the wall and I read it and it was for a dishwasher. I figured, ok. Some sort of in-house domestic services thing. I continued reading and it went on to describe how this person was to look, etc. She had to be in her 20s, single, attractive, certain height, etc... I was confused, so I asked my wife about it. She didn't understand what I was getting at. I was trying to point out that these qualifications have nothing to do with dishwashing. I think she found it weird that I found it weird and not that it was actually weird. But, over time, I learned more about what goes on within the culture and understood it. It just caught me off guard initially. One of the culture shock things, I guess.

It was a good arrangement. I had one for 6 years and we were like a Couple. She was 17 years old and I was 25 years old. One thing is we never slept in the same bed. We went out to eat and i took her to different places. Back in those days even if you were at a Strip club the girls were looking for a husband. If you were in the military like i was finding a wife in the club was the best way. Now a days things are different so a maid with benefits is not the way to go for me

you do the old trick of leaving a note (currency note) in the washing, or the cleaning area and see if she mentions finding it. You will have made the money obvious, but not too obvious. If she finds it, she should return it to you. But they often know that sort of trick...... so it's a bit of a long term thing.... keep an eye open for little minor things disappearing..... you will get a sense that things are walking from your place. You will be correct if you get that feeling. If she cleans the pipes as well, your personal papers, cellphone, computer, your secret hiding place will all be at risk, as she will know where you stash everything. And she will have the time to investigate. You really have to secure your cellphone (locked or hidden away) and have it password protected too. Your PC or laptop.... at least password protect it and everything on it. Lock it away is better. TBH personal recommendations from friends or associates who have previously employed a maid / housekeeper is the best. Just say to your friends that you are after a maid for this and that (and nothing on the side) and you are more than likely to get a contact number for a seriously good maid. Also remember that a person with little education, a village person, may be able to talk English, but not read it....... this means that your Phone and PC are safe.
