She gave up and was sending it to the junkyard! SO I told her I'd fix it free! A few weeks ago I introduced a car that had been purchased 3 days prior and was diagnosed by a local shop as "A Bad head gasket". It seemed odd to me, so when I took a look further I realized she almost got scammed twice!

Hopefully it was someone inexperienced and just a misdiagnosis. In the first video Earnest said that he sent her there because it is a reputable shop, I believe he also said that exhaust gases were detected, but not much which was a reason he doubted it was a head gasket issue.

Ran into this issue myself with my g35 awhile back. Had overheating and then my coolant reservoir was bubbling like crazy and spilling out. Took into a shop, and had them do a combustion leak test to see if it was a head gasket… they fucking lied and said it was. Figured that out later doing my own combustion leak test. And just going through process of elimination checklist. My car really didnt have any symptoms of blown head gasket.I did further research myself and troubleshooted the issue. Air was in the system. Bled the system and no more issues. Its insane how many people out there are either sloppy mechanics or just flat out greedy scum. Theres alot of people whod just lose hope and go into debt by either getting a new car or dropping 2k on a head gasket job that didnt need to be done. Its sad that people in this profession try to take advantage of others like this. Wish more mechanics out there had your integrity. Keep doing what your doing man, you’re honestly amazing. 👍🏼

Anything i cant do myself, repair wise, is usually because of Manufacturer specific tools that are needed. One thing i really hate about my Ford Fiesta, is that i cant reset a lot of the Dash Indicators, because it requires a toggle/dongle that isnt available to 'unauthorized dealers and repair techs'. I can reset my oil change indicator. But when i replaced my fuel pressure sensor, i learned i couldnt reset that alarm in my cars computer, without a special dongle. thankfully my dealership is awesome, and reset it for free.

yeah I bought a Volvo that came with a pile of repair invoices- it had been having heat issues and a Chev dealer charged him $400 to replace the thermostat, I was driving it and it never got warm, pulled the thermostat and found that they had just cut the centre out leaving the ring to hold the gasket, it wouldn't overheat but obviously not good in winter. I wonder what logic that dealer used

A similar situation: I have a friend who took his car to a shop recently because he was having trouble with it going uphill- it would ping a lot and seem to lose power. The shop told him that the catalytic converters (there are two) were bad and would need to be replaced. He asked my opinion of it, and I asked him what type of fuel he was using. Turns out, since gas is well over $3 a gallon here, he opted to put flex fuel (85 octane) in his car to save money. I told him to never do that again, as his car's fuel system is not set up for that, and to try and offset his mistake with some pricey 93 octane at the pump. Turns out that, a few days later, his car was much more responsive, and I save him at least a grand in repairs.
@dashcamandy2242
@dashcamandy2242 2 жыл бұрын
I borrowed a 2016 Grand Caravan (Flex Fuel-ready) from a friend of mine, the first time I put E85 in it, I had to have it towed home from the gas station (EDIT: refused to start immediately after fill-up) so I could drain the tank; I then advised her to never use E85 no matter what the manual and gas cap say. Which is fine, because she had no idea what E85 is, and it's not for sale at BJ's Wholesale Club where she gets her gas, so it won't be a future problem for her. By 28k she had already gone through three batteries, two oil leaks, seven TPMS sensor failures, and had the head replaced due to damaged valves (thank goodness for factory warranties). The last thing she needs is to tow the dang thing in for service because it is incapable of running on the fuel it is specifically-designed to run on!
@numberpirate
@numberpirate 2 жыл бұрын
Flex fuel is not 85 octane but 85% ethanol and ethanol has a higher octane rating than regular heptane and octane. If a vehicle does not have a flex fuel sensor to see what percentage of ethanol is in the fuel then the ECU will not compensate by adding more fuel as ethanol has less calories per unit volume than regular heptane/octane does. Which means that it has a different AFR value than the regular does. Big turbo tuners use E85 due to the resistance to pinging, it is a cheap alternative to race fuel, but they know to add an additional 15-20% more fuel. So what happened instead was the vehicle was running excessively lean which was heating up the cylinders so much that pinging was occurring due to heat. E85 needs to be run with a flex fuel sensor otherwise not enough fuel will be added which will not work out well when there is a large load, such as going up a hill. Your ends justified the means even though your understand of the means was off.
@gott2641
@gott2641 2 жыл бұрын
@@numberpirate Good call. Now that I know this, it's actually worse than I thought! Putting anywhere between 53% and 85% ethanol in a vehicle not designed for it is bad news indeed... I already ridiculed my friend enough about it initially, so hopefully lesson learned on his part. Just to think that his trying to save a few dollars on gasoline could have cost him a few hundred or thousand in repairs had it really done serious damage.
@SilvaDreams
@SilvaDreams 2 жыл бұрын
@@gott2641 E85 is used in tuned cars and a number of racing cars (Or just high performance cars) because it has a higher compression rate than gasoline allowing for better performance without the potential for self ignition due to the higher compression and technically the E85 also burns cooler since it is alcohol meaning the tuned high performance engine doesn't run as hot as it would with gasoline also providing less chance for premature self detonation. You average car isn't going to use or even know how to handle E85 as most likely it is going to be engineered to use 87 octane fuel... unless it is something like a mustang, Camaro or even a v8 Cadillac which needs 95 to run properly because of the higher compression it gives the engine.

Bought an old f150 to haul hay and trash, knocking uphill ... changed oil and did what always do and added a can of Restore for compression restore , problem gone. Been using 25 years, any vehicle over 150k i'd use once a year. Compression tests confirm it works.

I think you did a very good job, not only on the car, but also on the voice-over. Never ceases to amaze me (professional mechanic also) how quickly some (upper echelon) people will say: "Oh, it needs a new engine." I never know if they're trying to scare the customer away for good or trying to bleed them dry.

Appreciate your being honest and telling that customer it was not a blown head gasket. Worked on a few Subarus with that condition (horrendous EJ engine design with a coating that wears off causing coolant and oil to merge and get the "froth/foam" that you describe). Great diagnostic job!

I work on these engines and just about every time it Is blown headgasket. Unless you do leak down test on cold engine, you'll never know. Some will take month to drink enough coolant befor issues come back, some take a week(depending how much car is driven). The original coolant disappeared for a reason.. First sign is On those engines if heater doesn't blow hot at idle, know it's low on coolant.

I didn't even watch the video yet, and I had to stop to write this- The first thing I hear you say is "You probably don't care" Ernest- why are you so self deprecating? Who do you deal with on a daily basis to produce this mindset? Well- I can tell you- that I CARE, and your viewers here, on KZbin care! Other Social Platforms, mainly Facebook- have been Clinically shown to mess up people's perception of self worth. Just hold your course steady, we admire you here, we care, we want what's best for you & your Family. I know "good people" when I see them- and I can spot a creep a mile away.

Fantastic work, I was worried about this one as I had suspicious over heating issues in the past, which take a lot of time to work on (to diagnose properly). In my case a bad coolant bottle cap for one car and a lazy water pump on another. Good job!

One trick I like using for 90 degree thermostat housings with fiber gaskets is just the thinnest of thin coats of grey RTV to stick it in place so you aren't fighting it for 9 years. This is supposedly some huge taboo thing that will cause the gasket to fail, but it won't. The key is using a layer so thin it's not obscuring your view of the metal underneath it. The failure comes if you put a thick bead, because it will lift the gasket while tacking it which causes it to tear. Have yet to have any leaks or failures with this tactic. Back in the day they made a compound that was just for this purpose.

Hey Ernest you can use 3m spray glue to hold the gasket onto the thermostat housing . Also you can help get the air out by starting the engine turning the heat on medium and hold an idol about 2500rpm to 3000rpm until your heat is hot constantly . Great job 💯
