reminds me of a customer of mine said he had a crank no start condition. i got the truck towed to my house. I looked over to see if i saw anything and i did notice a new MAF sensor. I cranked it over to hear how it sounded cranking over. The truck took a while but it started up. I drove the truck down the street and it had hardly any power. On idle it would run fine but once i gave it some gas it just ran like crap and most of the time shut off. I was getting lean codes which was why they probably changed the MAF sensor. I felt it was definitely fuel related. I decided to change the fuel pump cause i could not figure out what it could be. no vacuum leaks or anything. Once i had the fuel pump out i can tell right away it was new. I compared it to the new one to make sure they were the same. I noticed that the old one had a rubber piece covering the bottom of the pump that feeds the fuel. I took the rubber piece out and just starting laughing. Well there's problem brother you forgot to remove the rubber piece when you took it out the box LOL

I have been a mechanic since I was 14. I would recommend you getting a silver dollar spark plug gapper next time you go to Auto Zone. Also a good way to clean the inside of the terminals is at Ace Hardware or a hardware or a plumbing store, get some copper fitting cleaning brushes. I buy the ones with the looped handle. I cut off the loops, chuck it in my Makita drill. Cleans the terminals great. Also helps to clean drive shafts when replacing u-joints. I buy all 6 sizes. The 1/2” works on negative, the 5/8 works on positive. If you want to spread terminals without a battery terminal spreader pliers, use a heavy snap ring pliers made for snap rings without holes. Works a lot nicer than what you are doing! Hello from north east Montana. 10 miles from the Canadian border.

RSR - Thank you! That is strangeness, but I had a similar some 42 years ago. I worked on Beetle's VW. For a summer, I worked as a mobile if it was broke, and in the driveway, if they got it there. I used Bosch plugs, but I had customers who had been to a garage and the Beetle's ran with misses. I had 4 engines I looked at, in a month. All had "the cham" plugs. I started from the distributor out, condenser, points, Vac Adv. All was fine. The difference was only the plug. I pulled the ones out of my engine and put them in the first one. It ran fine after, even on a spin it was fine, and 20 minutes before it ran with fits. So, I grabbed 2 sets of Bosch and fixed the first car. The second showed up and this time I started from the plugs back to the coil. Another set of new "cham". I replaced the plugs first. It ran fine. When the third arrived, again, fresh plugs that did not work. Asking myself Why? has been a lifelong habit. Cheers!

Those IHC diesels started on gas, then ran on diesel. There were 3 valves per cylinder. An intake, an exhaust, and a 1&1/8” diameter decompression valve witch lead to the spark plugs. Only IHC used this system. The WD40 came out in 1939, it was the first agricultural diesel tractor. It was hand cranked, mag ignition, run on gas to warm up, then switch over to diesel. Nice one! To remove seized diesel injectors, I try to give it a go when the engine is warm (if that’s possible) and (if you can reach there) spray some freezing spray onto them. You might have a chance... ~20Nm for battery terminals I usually do, or as you say: hand-tight
@MrKingdavis133 жыл бұрын
The easiest way to get that stuck plug out is to get the engine up to running temperature first then shut it down, pull that coil and spray some penetrating spray down inside the hole immediately, just enough to make a small puddle of fluid surrounding the threads then leave it sit for a few minutes. After a few minutes of soaking and cooling off try to break it loose with steady pressure but if it only moves a fraction of a turn stop and give it more time to soak and add more lubricant if the puddle drains away. After a few times doing that it should come out and if the plug didn't eat the threads on the way in you should be able to thread chase the hole and be good to go. I had a vehicle get towed into my shop once because the owner tried to change the plugs himself and got all 8 cylinders out but couldn't get them back in. The problem was that a previous owner helicoiled all 8 cylinders incorrectly so when he removed the plugs the coils came out as well and he threw them in the trash so I had to figure out what style were used and buy them again and insert them correctly to fix the issue. That sounds fast and simple here but since it was the dreaded hemi it has 2 plugs per cylinder which makes everything more expensive and twice as hard to work on. 16 plugs at $15.00 a piece plus the helicoils to fix all of them that are crazy expensive means it cost him more for that repair than I have paid for several vehicles. Lol

Remember, it can do this without the piston physically hitting the electrode on the spark plug, if the spark plugs are too long but not quite long enough to hit the piston top, the build up over time of excess compression can bend the electrode over time (several cycles of the piston) the excess compression because the spark plug is closer to the piston will bend the electrode back, so this can happen without the piston making physical contact. If you put that number 1 plug back in gapped correctly, and then cycle the piston several times on the key you will see the gap on the plug electrode shorten until it is touching, so your still probably right, cross reference the correct plug and see if it should be shorter. Plus if the plugs are cheap after market or no name copies, the electrode can be made of sub-par material making it softer and easier to bend with compression alone. We see this in single cylinder lawn mower engines every day, people putting any old plug in to finish the lawn. Usually out of a strimmer/brushcutter/weed eater.....

@chillybrit23343 жыл бұрын
You can get tools specifically for gapping plugs. They have a little notch you hook onto the bend of the electrode and you use it as a lever to adjust the gap. Prying away with a screwdriver risks damaging the centre electrode or cracking the ceramic insulator around it, which in turn leads to a misfire because the spark jumps through the crack rather than from the tip of the centre electrode. Particularly a problem with the newer platinum or iridium plugs where the tip of the centre electrode is super fine. Well worth the few bucks they cost and many come with a mini set of feeler gauges in the most common sizes attached. Besides, as a mechanic or technician, more tools is always better :D

I used a different brand and it was fine. Once in a while, I saw issues with spark plugs being manufactured BAD by a certain company. (NGK) This was back in the late 1970's back when cars were analog!

I don't recommend using an impact wrench on the 5.4 Triton spark plugs. I never had good luck with that. However I have had good luck with just a wrench and some WD-40 down the spark plug holes. You just turn it back and forth a few times, squirt some fluid down there turn it back and forth a few more times and they come out. Having said that I do own the spark plug removal tool as well.

And, here we come to the the take-away of this. I used to work as an electronics technician back in the '90's and we saw a lot of VCRs, stereos, etc., and once in a while we had a unit come in that a customer had "worked" on (and obviously now, didn't work right). This one time, a customer brought a VCR in that refused to accept a tape and he had apart to replace belts I think it was on it. Well, long story short, he only had the tape carriage (that's the mechanism that holds the tape and takes it inside the machine when loading/pushes out when unloading) incorrectly timed to the rest of deck mechanism. So, if you don't know what you're doing, don't touch it.

I drive one of these too. The first thing I did was change the spark plugs to iridium platinum plugs. It's a game changer for sure. But as much as they sell them as pre gapped you really have to check the hood to see the specification of the gap. I feel like they might have gapped them for the 2.5l sentra because mine weren't gapped for the 1.8l and that could really affect the timing. I just used the coin gapper worked like a charm only 97 cents it's not hurting anyone's pockets to do it right the first time around. Looks like the guy might not have been familiar with gapping his spark plugs maybe he thought you were supposed to pinch them with a needle nose pliers. I don't think any of them come with no gap like that. The gap might be off to change timing a bit but other than that it wouldn't be that drastic. You never know people do the craziest things to their cars lol. If you don't know what you're doing don't do it lmao

This was definitely installer error! He smashed them down and was to embarrassed to admit the mistake. I’ve even had people crack the porcelain on plugs trying to remove them on their own then stop because they know they messed up, then come into the shop saying they have a misfire can we check it out

I love when a customer comes in with a no start or a misfire after they messed around and plays stupid. Oh it just started doing it out of nowhere. A good tech is going to find it regardless but they could of saved the customer diagnose time if they're honest. we're going to find out the truth eventually so just tell your mechanic the WHOLE STORY and it could save time money and a trust.

I have a motorbike (alloy head, but air cooled) and often the plugs get real tight- but if you get the engine hot they come out no problem as the alloy expands faster than the steel of the plug- but never put cold plugs in a hot engine!

This is a very interesting video. I am surprised the engine didn't at least fire. Why in the world would a Saturday mechanic smash the gaps shut? I always check the gaps on new plugs before installation. Just to be sure they are right. What's wrong with correcting the gap if it is wrong or you accidently drop one? Love your channel, keep up the good work. Bill W.

If they were dropped, one or more of the spark plugs could be cracked up inside. I have an old AC Delco spark plug tester. This is nice on single and twin cylinder engines. There is no such thing as a single cylinder engine missing. Some twins use the waste spark system with only a single coil, sometimes a single bad spark plug will stop an engine from running.
