I rescued a 30lb orange Maine Coon named Moose. He was 10 years old. He was the sweetest couch spud buddy. After he settled in and started sleeping with me he would wake me up at odd hours. Eventually l noticed l was feeling off when he did. A trip to my doctor confirmed what Moose knew. I was having heart arrhythmias when sleeping. My doctor set me up on medication to prevent a heart attack. Moose saved my life. I lost him 5 years later when he had a seizure and passed in my arms. I still miss him 13 years later.

My big boy Lucky used to let me know when I was going to have an asthma attack before I even started to feel any sing if breathing issues. Since I grew up around cats and dogs, pet fur isn’t one of my triggers. Lucky would make me sit done and then go grab my emergency medicine bag. He wouldn’t leave my side until he knew for sure I was okay. He wouldn’t leave my sleep in my bed with me and would wake me up if he could smell an attack coming on in my sleep. Then he’d grab my med bag and my mom. I don’t have asthma attacks in my sleep very often. When I do it usually ends up with an ambulance ride to the ER. I had a friend Larry that had a 40 Maine coon mix and a heart condition. His cat was named Wedge. Wedge slept in his bed with him every night for almost the whole 6 he and his wife Barb had him. One day Larry had a heart attack and Wedge used his weight to jump on his chest. It was just enough that it kept him alive until medics got there. Barb had no clue what was going on as she’d been out grocery shopping. She came home to Wedge screeching and jumping on his chest. His watch called 911 before Barb could. The medics and the doctors all pitched in and got Wedge a steak for dinner that night.

Such a beautiful kitty! Just a tip. When I worked as a vet tech, we would use the door of a cage that had been removed and put it at an angle in the tub. That way the cat has something other than the human to latch on to. It really helped to keep them calm!

His quiet resignation in the dryer tugged at my heart. At first he was scared, then he decided he wasn't staying and was certain that if he only caught Vanessa's eye, she'd see the mistake she'd made by accidentally putting him in the noisy, breezy box. When he realized she wasn't going to rescue him, he looked disappointed then settled down to accept his fate! 😂 What a sweetheart! Loki and Zeus's parents must be especially loving and very interactive with them. Both pets have such lovely temperaments and both looked to Vanessa as the human in charge to allay their fears and help them through which says they have absolute trust in their humans. What a sweet dog and cat sibling pair!

My half mane coon kitten scratches her water in the bowl before she drinks and jumps in the bath tub to see what it is but runs when I turn on the faucet. I'm hoping she will let me give her a bath. She won't let me clip her nails, but she loves to be brushed. So far she's not getting any matting because she gets brushed almost daily. Guess we'll see next spring or summer for the bath. I hope I can do her nails by then because man, they're super sharp right now.

Large, long-haired cats often look surprisingly small after a bath, but this big fellow kept most of his size even after he got wet, which is unusual. He has an especially lovely coat and it will probably feel extremely soft and like silk after that bath. Only one meow of complaint while bathing is quite extraordinary to hear in a groom, though he was a bit more vocal about being trapped in the drying cage at the beginning. He ended up looking not much different than he came in, but there was certainly a lot of dirt underneath that mountain of fur.

Weirdly, I’m not at all allergic to Maine Coons or Ragdolls, despite being horrendously allergic to “cats”! I know it’s not a case of them producing less of the FelD1 protein that a lot of people with cat allergies are allergic to, because the breed tends to produce about the same or higher levels (something like the Siberian breed does produce less, I believe). I figured that with Ragdolls I wasn’t allergic because they have a different coat structure - very soft and silky but not double-layered like a lot of longhaired cat breeds. But then I met two Ragdoll x Maine Coon cross cats and spent a lot of time with them, and wasn’t allergic at all, and one of them has a very un-Ragdoll-like coat structure, so it can’t be just that! I’ve heard other theorising that perhaps the MC coat specifically being so dense and double-layered means it keeps the dander closer to their body, and not shedding as much as other cats… but I’m stumped, tbh! I’ve had my own two Maine Coons for over 2 years now and I’m very glad to say I’m still not allergic to them! I can bury my face in their fur and I’m fine, which is something I could have never done with the Himalayan cats I had as a kid. The fact they’re indoor only and not rolling around in a lot of grass and tree pollen has to help, but I’ve also met other indoor-only cats of different breeds that I’m still super allergic to, including short haired ones… so I have no idea what’s going on, but I’m very glad to have found some cats I can be around without having insane allergy and asthma attacks! Don’t give up on finding some the same - if you haven’t met any Ragdolls before, I definitely recommend seeing if you are actually allergic to them, or if they end up being magic cats for you as well! It took until I was nearly 40 to get my own cats, in large part due to the allergy thing, but also in being able to provide them with a good place to live (my dream would be to live somewhere bigger with a garden that can be made safe for them to go out into to explore and keep busy without the risk of either being stolen or attacked by dogs or foxes or cars!) - cats are brilliant 😻

Maine Coon's are so pretty, every time I see them they look like they just stepped out of a water colour painting. And once you brush him out all I see is cloud dust so beautiful.

I have a German shepherd but I also want a Maine Coon. 💕💕. The look on his face when you were washing him was priceless. 😳😳 He is just an adorable ball of fur. 💕
