Coons are usually like that (they can be indifferent and often non combative, they often don’t act like smaller breeds that see a need to be combative and vocal if they don’t like something in general), then you pair up with it being orange (orange cats are quite often friendly and often go to extremes on personality, seen some absurdly lazy and friendly to the point you would question their survival skills outside, others so active that I thought they were reincarnated small dogs). Long hair cats also often really like brushing, for them it’s like scratching or passing your hands about your arms and legs after removing skin tight clothing or fit to size shoes/hats.

When we got home and he realised he was free, he walked around for a minute then immediately remembered the tube and went back to the other room to get it!

RIP Gidget..best cat I ever owned.
@firecwby19993 ай бұрын
My condolences on your loss. It’s never easy to lose a family member like that. Also, from the short bit of info shared I would say that you were Gidget’s guardian, not her “owner”. It’s a small but very distinguished difference. An “owner” takes care of their “property”, where a guardian loves, respects, and takes care of their loved one.
@larrymunn52793 ай бұрын
I always had to get my kitty sedated to deal with her teeth, she was a street cat I picked up underweight with a collar digging into her neck, she would have grown into it. But they told me it takes a toll of their organs cus they are so small for their body size. Any time you can avoid putting a cat under, you should. Lost my girl to kidney disease, I just wish I'd had one more summer with her. I was the only one that could handle her but I dunno if I could have got her to let me brush her teeth, I never really tried. She was my satellite.

One thing I've noticed about people that have that stigma against cats...it's usually because they don't understand how to properly communicate with them. Cats are not dogs. A lot of them don't like being manhandled like a dog until they know you well/completely trust you. It's all about respecting the cat's boundaries and continuing to do so throughout the cat's life just like you would a human being. In my case, even cats that hate people warm up to me very fast because I am respectful of their boundaries. It's a miracle how much good it does.
@littlebear2743 ай бұрын
Agreed. If you have time the best way to meet a cat is to hang out in the same room and ignore it. That's polite behaviour for cats! Being too interested in a cat you've only just met can be seen as rude or even aggressive. You don't force yourself on them, you let them decide when they feel safe to approach you. I did that with a friend's cats the first time I catsat for her and they adored me afterwards, I always saw them much more often than anyone else who fed them and the more extroverted one would snuggle on my lap whenever I sat down. I like to have strong personal boundaries and need alone time as well so I get them. (This is also why people who aren't into cats often find that their friends' cats gravitate to them.)

I have always liked cats, and I had one as a kid. However, I have learned about their boundaries more since going for walks with my spouse and interacting with the neighbourhood kitties. He lets them come up to him and sniff his hand, and he is alert to their body language when petting them. Most cats go to him first over me.

When I got my cat home from the shelter for the first time I put his (open) crate in a corner and let him decompress as long as he needed to. After 3-4 days of adjustment, he was up on my lap constantly and he's now the biggest lovebug I've met. He was a farm cat and terrified of things like sirens at first, but now we go out for walks or drives on my scooter all the time. I have a big orange smart cookie of a Maine Coon! He knows that the intercom/video doorbell situation in my flat has some connection to the door opening and him being able to go up and down the corridor outside. From his perspective, when I get a delivery or visitor the intercom makes a sound, I then go and fiddle around with the intercom in some way (answer it, talk to them, press the door open button!), and then shortly afterwards (when they’ve come up in the lift) the door gets opened! He very quickly put this sequence of events together, and decided that if he wants the front door to open, he needs to mess with the intercom, and he’ll frequently reach up and knock the handset off the wall if I refuse to open the door when he very politely asks me 😂 Last night I was watching a video on my phone in the kitchen, and in the video someone rang the doorbell! Harvey took off at a run towards the front door, even though that definitely wasn’t the direction the noise was coming from 😂

Vanessa is the best I reckon ❤

Than you for what you said about cats, Vanessa! We love all animals equally but me and my family used to be the people who thought all cats were mean until we got our first pet, who was a stray Snowshoe Siamese that showed up on our doorstep. She's since passed about a year ago now and she changed our whole lives. She's my soulmate, my twin flame, my best friend, even in kitty heaven, and she's the reason I know why I was put on this earth. To care for animals and especially cats. We've had and currently have many cats of all personalities and each is such a gift. Because of her, we have a cat wall in our house that we fill with kitty decor, and we take care of any strays who come by. Our lives were flipped completely upside down in the best way possible and my god I miss her so much. RIP Bali, and Pretty Kitty, Moose, Cecil, Marmalade, and the cats of extended family who've passed. Thank you for showing us how powerful love is. I hope you're happy up there

I am the owner of the World's Smallest Maine Coon (only 13 lb) Unfortunately, we learned the hard way that we couldn't keep up with brushing her, so now she has a bi-monthly maintenance appointment with our groomer (after they told us she needed a lion cut due to how matted she had gotten) We give her a daily brushing regimen (along with her DSH brothers), which she thankfully tolerates

I was one of those people who thought I was just more of a dog person until I became a cat mom (the distribution system chose me) to a rescue. Sadly, we had to send him over the bridge over a month ago, and I'm waiting a bit before I consider another furbaby. But I can confidently say that dogs and cats both have their charms and I adore both now!

Oh, no worry, the distribution system knows where you are ... 😸 Could happily tell stores for an hour on the family dogs of my childhood, a runt of the litter beagle then a rescue collie. probably because dog people would think you're a psycho or murderer if you did. I swear they're nutbags. Thanks though, I prefer my animal that doesn't need constant walks, baths, extreme attention, and doesn't regularly smell like ugh. When I was a kid I was playing with some puppies and realized they were eating their own turds. And then sometime not much later I saw a dog in the street eating out of a baby diaper. The cuteness factor was mostly gone after that for me. I don't hate them but definitely not a fan most of the time.

One huge difference between cats and dogs is cats in groups practice social grooming. If you can tap in to that they can be very accepting. Of course, they don't usually dunk each other in tubs of water...

You say that last part, and by and large that is true. The exception was our neighbor's Siamese. He loved to swim, and babysit kittens. He would take eack kitten to the pool and plop it in the shallow end near the stairs, and teach it how to get out. Strange cat, but very safety conscious.

@EXROBOWIDOW3 ай бұрын
I used to know an annoying person who "loved" cats. We'd be walking around the neighborhood, he'd see a cat, and immediately run over and try to make friends with it. The cats always ran away. This man annoyed a lot of humans, too. He was born to be annoying, apparently.
@vields23522 ай бұрын
It usually takes being forced into a relationship with 1 cat for that attitude to change. I had a rescue cat when I met my now partner. He hated cats when we moved in together. He had a day off one day and I went to work. I came home to find them asleep on the couch cuddling together and his arm scratched up. They had been playing rough together all day. His arm remained scratched up from that day on.😂

Perhaps you meant well - but when you mean well and someone points out your reply did not go down well, the kind thing to do is apologise and move on, not go on the defensive. I was scared of most dogs as a kid. The only one I truly liked was my grandma and grandpa’s rescued German shepherd and collie mix, cuz she was so dang gentle! When I was a small kid, I once tripped on her tail, which obviously made her yelp. I got scared and started crying. She immediately came over to comfort me! She was so sweet and kind! She’d bark in this really high-pitched way, and never did any deep barks or even play-growling. When I then met dogs that jumped up, sniffed you in the groin (where smells are strongest, so obviously that’s where they smell people) or barked a lot, I’d get scared and try to hide. I’ve gotten much better (and a bit taller, so that helps too), but I still jump and get this “flee!!!”momentary reaction when I see a dog that I don’t know. Obviously I don’t run away, but I can’t stop the brief moment of fear that happens if a dog barks at me or tries to jump up, even if I know it’s not done to hurt me. So, I prefer cats, although I’ll admit, if they’re old and farty and not that great at cleaning themselves anymore, then them deciding I’m the place to sit isn’t the best thing in the world, but as long as the tooting is kept to a minimum and I have a blanked on me, I make it work 😅

I feel like he 100% jumped out of the tub and we didn't get to see it! I wonder how she was able to catch him and get him back in. Poor kitty. As an owner of a long-haired cat, you really have to brush them everyday, if not twice a day, and matting can still occur. What a good boy. And for him to be so sweet during his first groom also says a lot about Vanessa.
