Ever notice that when we get the answer to a question that’s limiting us, we don’t say, “Oh wow! That’s amazing! Maybe I need to reconsider my position.” Instead, we say, “Well, what about…?” and ignore the fact that an excellent answer was just given to our first question.
@5145liam3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, thats because our ego and identity is attached to the argument. We can't even begin to imagine we are wrong because what that would entail is too painful a thought. Instead, we jump to another 'what about this' instead of taking the argument, understanding and deconstructing it. I sometimes don't change my mind, not initially because my emotions are attached so I understand when others don't change their minds either. We are human, not completely rational.

All atheists need to read the book "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel (also a movie). He was an atheist on a mission to disprove Jesus Christ once & for all. I have read it - not only can I refute it but other Christians can even refute Strobel's book. There is a Christian historian named Laura Robinson who debunks Strobel quite nicely. Lee Strobel also had to correct a huge error he made with the first edition of the Case for Christ. He believed in the Varderman Coin claims that archaeologist McRay told him about, but it ended up being completely false. Not only that but Lee only interviews evangelical Christians in the book - and never any non-Christian scholars. This is completely dishonest and it gives Lee permission to cheat, which does not sit well with me. An honest journalist interviews both sides - not just the side he believes in. Lee Strobel is a joke - and a bad one at that.

@@jessebryant9233 Well, of all of the secular morality explanations that I've heard, I like Matt Dillahunty's the best. And that is, if people can agree that the happiness and well being is the goal of the society, then you can objectively measure whether actions "morally" agree with that or not. So for example, take that story in the Bible where men went to war but didn't have enough virgin women spoils of war to go around for all the men, so they hid in bushes and stole women from a village. You can argue that was morally wrong because though it makes the men happy, that goes against the happiness and well being of the kidnapped women. So, do you get the idea?
@elimartin41073 жыл бұрын
@@onlimi616 Here is why Matt's explanation doesn't work. Because the people saying that happiness and general well being of society should be the goal get that moral standing from God not themselves. If there was no God we would have no concept of what good is. We are made in God's image that's why we have morality.

When people say "you have no other proof but one book, the Bible" they do not understand that Bible is not one book, it is a collection of many books and letter by many authors talking about the same events. If you tell a man that God is demanding no good works of him whatsoever, no religious observances or church ordinances, that God is not asking him to undertake any duties at all, but that God invites him to believe a glad message that his sins have already been dealt with at the Cross, and that God expects him to believe this good news and be exceedingly happy about it. If you tell an unsaved man such a story at this, he is astonished and overwhelmed-yet this is the Gospel! Our Apostle, Paul, reveals the following great doctrines; 1. The unrighteousness before God of all men. 2. The impossibility of justification by works before God- that is, of any man’s attaining a standing of righteousness before God by anything done by him. Do what a man may, he is a condemned sinner still. 3. The fact and the Scripturalness of righteousness on the free gift principle-that is, of Divine righteousness, separate from all man’s doings, conferred upon man as a free gift from God. 4. Propitiation-that satisfaction of God’s Holy Nature and law for man’s sins rendered by Christ’s blood. 5. Reconciliation-the removal by Christ’s death for man of that obstacle to righteousness which man’s sin had set up between God and man. 6. The plan of the actual conferring of the gift of righteousness upon all who believe, without any distinction. This change of a sinner’s standing before God, from one of condemnation to one of righteousness, is called Justification. Negatively, it is deliverance from guilt on account of Christ’s shed blood and deliverance out of the old creation by identification in death with Christ on the Cross. Positively, it is a new standing in the risen Christ before God. 7. Redemption-the buying back of the soul through the blood of Christ from sin; from the curse of the law-even death, involving exclusion from God under penalty; from the "power of death," which involves the hand of the enemy; and from all iniquity. 8. Forgiveness-the going forth of Divine tenderness in remitting the penalty for sin in view of the blood of Christ trusted in, and in complacency and fellowship to creatures who before were necessarily under Divine judgment. 9. Remission of sins-that is, the actual removing of transgressions or trespasses from the sinner, so that for all time and eternity his sins shall not again be upon him. 10. Identification-(see above, Justification). The great fact that those who are in Christ were united with Him at the Cross by God’s sovereign inscrutable act and were crucified with Christ and buried with Him, so that their history is now ended before God. And when Christ was raised up as the Firstborn of the new creation, they also were raised up with Him and their history began as new creatures in God’s sight in Christ, the Last Adam. Of course, in the experience of the Christian there comes a time when he is actually made partaker of this new life-that point of time when he is, as we say, saved, or converted, or born again, etc. Nevertheless, the life that is in every Christian came up out of the Tomb, and it is in Christ Jesus that a man is created anew. 11. Incorporation-This tremendous doctrine Paul alone mentions, and he makes it practically the foundation of all his exhortations to the saints with regard to their conduct and life. By "incorporation" we mean the fact that all those who are really saved and are new creatures in Christ Jesus become members of one organism (called "the Body of Christ"), which is more real than the very earth we tread upon-Christ Himself in Heaven being the Head of this Body and every real Christian a member of it. So that believers are thus members of Christ in Heaven and also members one of another here on earth. No wonder Paul is able to exhort the saints to love one another when they are members one of another! (Rom. 12; 1 Cor. 12; Eph. 4). 12. Inhabitation-The wonderful fact that the Body of Christ and each member of it individually is inhabited, indwelt, by the Holy Spirit Himself, and not only so, but that the Church is being "built together" as a great temple of God so that in the future God’s actual eternal dwelling place will be this wonderful, mysterious company built into a building called "a holy habitation of God in the Spirit." This mystery is a great and marvelous one-the fact that we are saved, are partakers now of the life of the Lord in glory, that the Holy Spirit indwells us. 13. Divine Exhibition-That is, that through the Church in the ages to come is to be made known that which God counts His "riches," even His Grace (Eph. 2:7,3:10). Paul in his wonderful revelation declares that God hath reconciled the world to Himself; that God was in Christ (at the Cross) reconciling the world unto Himself (2 Cor. 5:19). Men do not know this, but they conceive that something stands between them and God before God will accept or forgive them. 2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 1 Timothy 3: And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. Zoroastrianism was nearly dead for almost 12 centuries, from about 600 AD to 1800 AD. Today there are still less than 1 Million adherents (far fewer than Judaism). As a consequence, it is believed about 3/4 of the verses in the Avesta were lost to antiquity, and the oldest manuscripts date to 1010 AD, not thousands or hundreds of years BC. Modern Zoroastrianism bears little resemblance to its roots. In fact, the book of Isaiah (first reference to the Promised One's birth to a virgin, suffering & death, and resurrection) was written before 500-600 BC, when Zoroaster was born! Zoroastrianism's first references in other documents of antiquity were from the period of Babylonian captivity of the Hebrews, so it is clear Zoroaster copied from Judaism, and not vice versa. There is simply no comparison to Christianity, which has grown continuously from a few hundreds beginning in the 1st century AD until the present day total of about two Billion adherents. Millions more come to Christ each year. It is estimated more than one-third of the world will be Christian by 2100, and if it were not for the rapture of the church prior to Christ's return, I don't doubt some 10 Billion believers (half of the world's population) would exist by 2150. Christian scriptures add a New Testament to Hebrew scriptures (called the Old Testament), and together, these 66 books provide a complete history of the Earth from its Creation to about 120 AD, some 4500 years later. While the Bible isn't strictly a history book, every book of the Bible can be traced to an actual time, place, and in many cases, an author. The Zoroastrianism Avesta doesn't even attempt to provide history, but only fantastical (imaginary) account of the creation of a man and a bull by Ahura Mazda as the source of all living things.

I believe evil is equivalent to darkness or coldness. It's not necessarily a thing, just the absence of the opposite. Evil is the absence of good.
@Bi0Dr01d3 жыл бұрын
I think there is more to it than that. Jesus said these words: Matthew 6:22-23 22¶The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. *If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!* I don't think it's referring to a literal light when it calls darkness "a light", but I believe it's referring to an aura, something that emits from the very being of a person when they are in darkness that has actual properties to it. It might be a corruption of an existing spiritual essence that at one point was pure and then was altered into a darkness, but there seems to me an actual presence evil that exists as a substance, it may still be true that it is the absence of good anyway, though it is an essence. I'm just saying that there could be more to it, or perhaps you're correct, but I thought I would make mention of this scripture.

Even Justin Martyr recognized the analogies between Christianity and Paganism. To the Pagans, he wrote: "When we say that the Word, who is first born of God, was produced without sexual union, and that he, Jesus Christ, our teacher, was crucified and died, and rose again, and ascended into heaven; we propound nothing different from what you believe regarding those whom you esteem sons of Jupiter (Zeus)." I think the reason why he said, "we don't know anything now" is because maybe athiesm can't justify why knowledge is important, why anything we know to be true is actually whats true, (as in how do we trust out own interpretation, how do we trust our own brains that made those interpretations and so on and on) I think there must be something thats from the very basic level that we are able to trust first which can in turn allow us to trust everything else that we should want to trust to then say, "okay this is true....that is true" I think cliffe is saying that in athiesm there isn't really that base level thing that allows us to then trust everything else that we should be trusting. Because the reason for us trusting stuff isn't really justified outside of our own subjective interpretation that we then try to convince others of the same. Thats what athiesm is, I think thats what he may be trying to say. Because as a Christian myself, I dont really know what the point of any information would be in the athiest worldview. Why this? And why that? Like ask why all the way to the very base reason for being, and from there we could say, "okay all this for that one reason" it doesn't need to be God, but what is the objective reason for whatever knowledge we possess? If there is no objective reason thats beyond humans, then there really is no actual point other than to just fill yourself with knowledge. MAYBE But for Christians, since God says we can trust him, and leads us to one piece of information, from that piece of information we can derive whatever other knowledge that we want, and why would we want to derive all that knowledge? What's the point of all this knowledge? To glorify God in his creation.

For most of us who may be considered atheist, it doesn't work out to a true or false proposition. God just isn't. The notion of religion just doesn't work into any part of are life fundamentally. We may have other social interest that supports are needs, activities, security or virtues. There is a good number of people though who seem to want to look at atheism as a religion itself but as a group these aren't a very stable or able minded bunch of people. It's with this element of society that Christians have the hardest time with. There is no preaching, ministering or guidelines written in stone. Knowing right from wrong is just learned like learning to walk or swim maybe. It's a second nature that affects us through senses, reflexes and natural responses. Hello. I am an atheist. I define atheism as suspending any acknowledgement as to the existence of gods until sufficient credible evidence can be presented. My position is that *_I have no good reason to acknowledge the existence of gods._* And here is the evidence as to why I currently hold to such a position. 1. I personally have never observed a god. 2. I have never encountered a person whom has claimed to have observed a god. 3. I know of no accounts of persons claiming to have observed a god that were willing or able to demonstrate or verify their observation for authenticity, accuracy, or validity. 4. I have never been presented a valid logical argument which also employed sound premises that lead deductively to a conclusion that a god(s) exists. 5. Of the 46 logical syllogisms I have encountered arguing for the existence of a god(s), I have found all to contain multiple fallacious or unsubstantiated premises. 6. I have never observed a phenomenon in which the existence of a god was a necessary antecedent for the known or probable explanation for the causation of that phenomenon. 7. Several proposed (and generally accepted) explanations for observable phenomena that were previously based on the agency of a god(s), have subsequently been replaced with rational, natural explanations, each substantiated with evidence that excluded the agency of a god(s). I have never encountered _vice versa._ 8. I have never experienced the presence of a god through intercession of angels, divine revelation, the miraculous act of divinity, or any occurrence of a supernatural event. 9. Every phenomenon that I have ever observed has *_emerged_* from necessary and sufficient antecedents over time without exception. In other words, I have never observed a phenomenon (entity, process, object, event, process, substance, system, or being) that was created _ex nihilo_ - that is instantaneously came into existence by the solitary volition of a deity. 10. All claims of a supernatural or divine nature that I have encountered have either been refuted to my satisfaction, or do not present as falsifiable. ALL of these facts lead me to the only rational conclusion that concurs with the realities I have been presented - and that is the fact that there is *_no good reason_* for me to acknowledge the existence of a god. I have heard often that atheism is the denial of the Abrahamic god. But denial is the active rejection of a substantiated fact once credible evidence has been presented. Atheism is simply withholding any acknowledgement until sufficient credible evidence is introduced. *_It is natural, rational, and prudent to be skeptical of unsubstatiated claims, especially extraordinary ones._* I welcome any cordial response. Peace.
