According the rule 223 in the Highway Code you need to give way to buses, especially when moving off from a bus stop, this is because buses often have to stop on busier roads to pick up and drop off their passengers, and without the special priority they would find it very hard to pull away and get on with their journey.
But it is not just giving way to buses at bus stop, you always need to give larger vehicles, such as buses, plenty of space and be prepare to give way to them.

6:55 - The message about the double dashed lines is slightly misleading. Many motorists believe it to mean that it is to signify which side of the road you should pass on but it is actually just a notice that any traffic leaving the road should give way. A no entry is actually defined by the road signs such as the red circle with the white line, or a sign prohibiting certain vehicles from entering such as a bus gate. This can commonly be seen on many country or very rural roads which are narrow and thus allow for two-way traffic but have the dashed line all the way through!

Hi, the 20mph speed limit near the Langley green primary school, does this apply at all times or just during school hours? I.e. morning school drop off time and after school pick up time? Thanks.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 11 ай бұрын
If it is in a red circle then it is a mandatory speed limit which applies all the time. The ones that only apply at certain times are typically advisory, as not in red circle, and the sign will specific say "Max 20mph when lights show".
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 11 ай бұрын
It's a good idea to look at the video to clarify more about the advisory 20's which only apply at certain times, many people misunderstand these signs, they think you have to do 20mph all the time or you MUST NOT even exceed 20mph when the signs show, both of those statements are incorrect. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZzLfGekltV5lbc

0:58 To be fair I can understand him/her accelerating beyond 20mph. That road doesn't look as though it's designed for a 20mph limit. There's no narrowed lanes and the road markings are placed too far apart. For the 20 zone to be safe and for drivers to WANT to follow it, there must be visual cues for them to slow down.

Hi I have my driving test booked for the end of September at Crawley however I have been mainly practising around Redhill as that is where I hoped to get a test. Do you have any tips specific to the Crawley test that may help me out? Thanks:)
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose the mains things are: 1. Give yourself time to read the road signs and marking carefully when approach and exiting junctions / roundabouts, there are often signs / markings telling you what lane you need to use and this may break the normal 'rules', also they are often speed limit changes. 2. "think twice decide once", use this approach when judging things, for example when pulling out at junctions or changing lanes to exit roundabouts or merging on a slip roads. Often vehicles can be coming quite fast, so if you don't 'think twice' you may misjudge the speed of the other vehicle or not see them at all.

you will see on the videos on my channel most of the 'problems' are due to poor observations, and just needing to take a bite more care to anticipate and observe things.

Laurence ! RE: Serious # 5 is a toughie. I've rewatched on PC and you genuinely can only tell the exit ends in double give way lines 'all across the road' in the last 10-20 metres ; I can thus see why the driver saw it late attempted move across to right and failed !!!!!!! This is a nightmare on a test with a new pupil new to the area !!!?????
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I know what you mean, but the logic is you are exiting a dual carriageway via a slip road, there is nothing on the slip road (such as a house), so there is no reason for traffic to come towards you, as they will be going the wrong way onto the dual carriageway. There are also no signs saying you have gone back to a two way road, so you have to assume it is still one way on the slip road. Sometimes it is like this on test, it can be frustrating, but it is still a fault. Just a shame at the moment as that was about 3 months ago and the pupil was not able to find another test due to the backlogs, and their theory expired, they have re-passed their theory now and atm got their practical in January, they are looking for cancellations. Just hope they pass their practical at this next attempt at the big gap in now lessons does not effect them too much.

Am I right in thinking that the bus that indicated to pull out should not have done so unless the road behind him was clear?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
No, that would be incorrect. A car driver should only indicate when it is safe to go, unless the road is extremely busy, then you might signal to show intension and to 'ask' for a gap. But a bus is different, they have priority as per rule 223 of the Highway Code, as such they are taught to signal to shown intention and then would expect the other road users to give way to them. Only thing is the bus driver should only move when the other road users have slowed down or stopped, they should NOT assume the cars will give way (which is what this bus driver did, but I can see why they did it)
@pizzaboy3946
@pizzaboy3946 2 жыл бұрын
@@UKDrivingTest Thanks very much for that. I had no idea of rule 233. I assume it's there as a practical measure to allow public transport and service vehicles to go about their business. I'm sure I was never told that when learning to drive and I wager most people wouldn't be aware of it. Am I right in assuming, however, that a code of practice stating a that a driver should give priority is not the same as a right of way on the part of the bus driver who is indicating to pull out?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the rule is there to allow the buses to get on with their journey and to avoid delays. Priority is just what it is official called, the bus driver has priority, not right of way. It think the idea is 'right of way' is a bit strong willed, "I have the RIGHT to go, not matter what happens, it is my RIGHT" etc etc. Where as priority is a bit softer, you may have priority but still make sure the other road users are giving way to you.

Some of these majors can be so inconsequential, like the final one. Sometimes drivers get confused and don't have the best position at give ways, but drivers coming up from behind should be slowing down anyway! How is this a serious? Some of these are obviously serious faults though. It's just that one I didn't get.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, it can seem harsh, but it is a pretty common serious fault that all examiners would give. I guess it is seen like driving on the wrong side of the road, or turning right using a left only lane.
@keith6400
@keith6400 2 жыл бұрын
I think the problem with this type of error is that on old fashioned dual carriageways that have evolved from an older street layout is that losing track of road markings and signs has led to people driving the wrong way down dual carriageways.

The one thing that made the difference here is the space between the car and the right-hand kerb. That is more than enough space for yet another car to fit in the correct position for the right turn. Top faults highlighted, although the last one may not count as serious as there were no further road markings to indicate where to stand at the junction prior to make a turn.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean there were not arrows saying where to position? As there will not always be arrows on 'quieter' roads, you need to realise you are on a one-way road, due to just coming off a dual carriageway and no signs saying other wise, and then positions according, also the give way lines make it clear it is a one-way road. This was footage from a real test, so it is 100% a serious fault, quite a common one in fact, only if you had an extremely nice examiner might they only give you a driver fault, but that is pretty rare.

This is not road craft. It's DVSA. Not to do with best visibility, its about showing understanding of the rules. This is just how the DVSA work, and why some don't like it, sometimes it's very black and white, no appreciation of why we might do something, if it's not following the rules then it's wrong.,

Does the same apply to cyclists signalling right (putting their hands to the right)?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
I am not aware of any Highway Code rule that says give way to cyclists when they are signalling right. HOWEVER, they are a vulnerable road user and as such you should give them space, so if they do signal right it may sometimes be best to give way to them. But it completely depends on the situation.
@annabelholland

yes overtaking ANY vehicle / road user on the side they are signalling is also asking for trouble. If they are signalling to turn right you can indeed overtake them on the left, as there is minimal risk.
