Here are some great products to help you power your camera anywhere!
Powering your camera in the field (if your camera doesn’t have USB power): tethertools.com/product/case-...
Powering your camera in the field (if your camera has USB power): amzn.to/2O8GMer
Charging your camera in the field: bhpho.to/3fa2t7n
Powering your camera at home (AC): amzn.to/3oNar9G
Powering your camera at home (USB): amzn.to/39O1vfI
Intro - 00:00
In this video, we look at some alternative power options for your camera! We talk about both powering your camera in the field, as well as at home when plugged into the wall, and look at some solutions for both use cases.
Field Power - 01:30
There are really two ways to go about powering your camera in the field. The first is charging your camera batteries in the field, and the second is directly powering your camera off a larger power source such as a USB battery bank. The first is helpful for long trips without access to wall power, and the second can be useful when changing batteries is difficult such as when shooting video or time-lapses.
Luckily, camera brands are starting to catch on, and many newer camera chargers are USB-powered allowing them to be used in the field or at home. This means that a simple USB power bank can be used to keep your batteries charged in the field. If your camera charger doesn’t support USB power, many aftermarket chargers are available (see the links above).
Home Power - 07:27
If you are looking to power your camera directly off a larger power source, check to see if your camera supports charging or powering via USB. If it does, simply buy a USB power bank (linked above) and directly connect it to your camera. Do be sure to get a power bank that supports the same power standard as your camera (Power Delivery “PD” or PowerIQ). If your camera doesn’t support USB power directly, just pick up a Tether Tools Case Relay with a “dummy battery” and you’ll be good to go!
Lastly, if you are looking to power your camera for longer at home (this is super helpful for video shooters), a dummy battery with an AC adapter or USB “wall wart” can be a great option.
Whatever your power goals are, there is most likely a power solution that will fit your needs!

You can charge an R5 at 18w but it needs 9v 3A (27w) delivered to run the R5. So need a PD supply that can give 3A at 9v - a more expensive powerbank than any I'd had before!

Does someone know if one can charge the battery in camera, with the USB cable supplied using for example, and Anker 10K power bank. Again, via the Nikon USB supplied? I'm a little wary of trying this method without advice.. Thanks!

Excellent video summary of this issue. I do Astro and timelapse and have figured out some of these issues that you have confirmed for me. I use a Teather Tools dummy battery on my Canon R5. What’s cool about it is that it has an external in-line battery that connects to my power bank which allows me to even swap power banks without loosing power to the camera. I also can connect my PD power bank directly to the camera USB C port but I often use that port fior my Timelapse+ View.

Hey! Would you happen to know whether or not using the official dummy battery & wall adapter from Canon would affect audio at all? I use an external RODE mic on top of my M50 that connects straight into the camera, and I've seen a lot of bad reviews for most dummy batteries where people had audio interference with external mics - but I can't find any info on whether or not that's also an issue with the official dummy battery & adapter from Canon. I assume since it's official it should be fine, but the thing's so friggin expensive that I'm trying to find out beforehand 😅

When using my Canon R7 for night timelapse videos I use a relatively inexpensive 65W/20000 mAh USB-C power bank from Amazon which seems to work very well and cost well under $100. One thing to keep in mind is to support the USB connection at the camera, as they can be prone to damage easily...

Hi there, I would really want to thank you for giving your opinions on this video. - As a beginner, I wanted unlimited power for my camera because most of the time I will be filming indoors at 4k30, I have the Sony zv-e10 and I know that will die in no time. - Thorough my research, I have seen people are mostly okay with 3rd party battery, the worse they can do is fail - Like what you mentioned, it's really hectic to record and switch out batteries in the middle of the record, and if you want to do so for a long time, you'll need a lot of batteries, the cost and time to charge the batteries will dramatically increase - Therefore, I have looked into dummy battery, the original ones are at crazy price, hence I look at the 3rd parties one. I saw alot of people actually fried their camera using cheaper 3rd party ones because of the wrong voltages or voltage spikes. - Hence I did ALOT of research on the 3rd parties dummies but it's just way too overwhelm on how many versions are there in the market. At the end of the day, the 3rd party ones just don't give me the confidence. - I initially avoided the usb-c charging method as I have heard from people that continuous charging will hurt the battery's life and cause overheating compare to dummy batteries. - I in fact know that my camera actually supports USB-C charging, but I'm not sure will by doing so hurts my original battery. Thanks for the video once again

Anyways was wondering if I can connect my battery on a dtap battery via usb instead of dummy battery or using a battery like the one you’re using ? Also do you need to have a battery inside the camera while you’re using that external battery ? Please let me , I really do appreciate what you it is very helpful !!!
@forestchaput

That’s hard to answer without a bit of careful experimentation. If the X-S10 has a USB-C port, you should be able to plug that into a USB power bank with a real battery in the battery compartment and be good to go! Dummy batteries can be dangerous as you found out.

Very informative and helpful video. But I wanted to know if you are using power bank on Sony cameras, does it stops charging in between while recording? because I tried charging with the power bank while recording on my a7iii and battery was actually draining as usual (Not at a quick pace, but the same as the usual pace without connecting to a power bank or any other charging source.) I don't use any additional dummy batteries, just my camera battery. Please provide me with a solution for this if you have any idea about it. Thanks.

I remember the _Sunpac_ car battery sized power pack. Ok, they weren't actually the size of a car battery, but after a day of shooting in the field they seemed like it. The Sunpac batteries were roughly the size of four-DVD movie cases and weighed about two pounds. I carried four on a belt, four more in my pack. I would shoot fairs and festivals, dirt track races and outer edges of professional sporting events. I tried to be the first there and the last to leave. thirty rolls of thirty-six exposures was a good day of work.

Hmmm. It sounds like your power bank and/or dummy battery aren't putting out enough voltage. I believe the voltage of a Canon battery is about 7.2 volts so 5 volts would definitely be too low. I would imaging the issue is with your dummy battery not having a voltage step up system built into it.
