My parents shop here, I know their prices are reasonable & some come out even cheaper from grocery stores & other district market even for seafood (but come early for those). If you become a "suki" (loyal customer of a seller you will for sure get better deals just like in district markets. Glad you were introduced to this area.

Nice market! Have you thought about checking out Bantanyan Island? It's north of Negros, kind of between Negros and Cebu. You can get a bus from Bacolod apparently to there.

So surprised at the size freshness & variety at the market. There was one odd looking fruit ( I think ) It had a green sculpted looking afro, lol. It was pretty large, about the size of a melon.

@Khelisie Salvatore do you mean ~4:55 ~4:57? I believe that’s a jackfruit or in Tagalog, langka. You may be able to get it fresh in your markets, K., if I recall your state correctly….but you can def get it canned at Asian food stores. It is ok right outta can, ie topping for ice cream if it is in syrup or wrapped into Turon with the plantain/banana. May also be used in savory recipes (sans syrup!) as a kinda meat substitute, kinda like a veggie pasta but more dense than pasta. Luv your description though I’m not sure this is the fruit to which you are referring, more like a growing out military buzz cut to me on the langka?!

@@wintersojourn9356 yup you got it right. Thank you for all the information. I'm gonna have to look for it and give it a try.😊 I'm in Florida so depending on the area you can get many different cultures or you just get the standard stuff in Walmart or the big box grocery store alternative. I live in the area with just the Walmart and 1 other grocery store... not my choice but economic. I will just have to make a road trip which should be fun.

Yes, I remembered your state correctly! I thought you may have more access to fresh tropical produce there, but if you’re not urban, perhaps not. I’ve always just known the canned langka, I couldn’t identify the fresh fruit until I became a Phil vlog fan. A lot of the vloggers enjoy cooking so I’ve learned lots. I have always known to use canned langka in Turon though. It was my in aunt’s Turon recipe & she taught me how to make that particular dessert. I only use her technique, though it is more work. You can also put it in halo halo , I forgot to list that in my earlier reply. I never used it in stirfrys or stews as a savory component until recently. My other fave Phil. Vlogger, she’s a vegetarian & I learned that from her.

It's actually Madras Thorn, rather than Martha's or Martin's thorn. 😂 I get it that it gets mistaken for those names. Also known as Camachile, Manila tamarind, and the scientific name is Pithecellobium dulce, if you're a biology geek. We used to have that tree in our backward so we eat it like staple during the summer season.

I wasn’t familiar with camachile, Ty for the info & to TPL for showing it. Luv the English name, Madras Thorn. Sounds like a fairy tale plant name. Read that besides diabetes, can aid with toothache, mouth sores, digestion issues, bone strength! Good source of Vit C & Calcium.

My question is, how in the world do they keep out of the fresh and not ripening too fast in that heat? I am moving to Cebu in August and love my fruits and veggies and wondering how efficient it is to not only buy it from an outdoor market but then trying to get stuff hoe before it spoils. Any thoughts on that? Love the videos! keep them coming!

Many fruits and vegetables do not need to be refrigerated until they are refrigerated. They grow in the heat they can survive in the heat. Most of the products in those markets are harvested less than a few days prior to sale. Unlike in more "developed" nations where produce is often harvested and shipped WEEKS before it even sees the grocery store shelves.

Colorful, fresh & orderly. It was very pleasant & satisfying somehow to see all the fruits & veggies piled high. Like our farmer’s markets but …supercharged! Wished you bought the 🐌🐚, yummy. & the broccoli & those looong green beans/sitaw. I appreciated the vendor in red. Very informative. If she didn’t have to mind her storefront she wud be a great overall tour guide of all the produce.

P.s. I am returning to addendum my earlier comment, in case you guys see this to tell you we had Campari tomatos as main ingredient in a simple salad last night. Saw them in grocery & hadn’t noticed them before, though I’ve purchased them I’m sure in past. I tend to stick with my brands, like many of us do. When I saw they were from Canada & how deep red they appeared, I got them impulsively. So delicious, esp after the long winter of cardboard tomatos. But I was laughing a bit coz now anything Canadian leads me to think of TPL! & you are not even in Canada anymore!

Why is Broccoli hard to get?
@BiancaBeyond
@BiancaBeyond Жыл бұрын
Only grown in colder climates like the mountains, as well. You have to buy the large stems here so it's expensive as it's priced per kilo and you only eat 30% of it (no nutrients in the stems)

@@nancypacete69 What makes it expensive here in Iloilo is when they sell, they don’t cut the stem which is almost half of the weight of the broccoli.
@wintersojourn9356

The broccoli stem doesn’t have much nutrients, true, but we still use & eat it as part of broth/soup. Toss the last inch or two if it’s Rock hard. Cut it longitudinally & boil then simmer. It looks appetizing, imo, & tastes good too. No nutrients but there’s flavor & fiber.
