I am glad you have the tusk pannier rack system as I purchased the same rack and was just guessing if this luggage system would work with it! The tusk rack is 18mm dia. and the Givi luggage system has a 16mm and 18mm dia. bracket, that's all I went on when I purchased everything! This video is nice for confirmation of that!

These look great, best solution for a replacement for my Givi hard TRK Monokeys. The Nylon plate looks like it'll fit straight onto the existing Givi rack I have. Good video Matt!
@MeOrNotMeWhoKnows
@MeOrNotMeWhoKnows 4 жыл бұрын
Questionable mounting design. That plate makes Givi's PL racks incompatible with Monokey cases, so if I want to go with soft luggage for an off-road trip today - I have to mount this plate. Then, when I want to put back the Trekker cases (TRK33 in my case) for a kind of trip where hard luggage is more suitable - I have to get that plate off the bike. Which is too much hassle, and knowing Givi's "quality", putting that plate on and off multiple times will eventually wear something out and it'll stop working properly. This is bad design. They should've made it with Monokey mount out of the box, so that all the people that already have monokey racks would just use these bags in the same plug&play way as hard cases. And everyone else, with generic tubular racks - those folks would use a plate that converts their racks to monokey mount. This, plus multiple reports of these bags getting damaged on light impact, and being hugely overpriced for what they are (as most of givi stuff is though) - I'm not gonna be buying these. And they're quite heavy as well, TRK33 case is 5.2-5.3kg, and these, according to another review on youtube, are 3.2kg each + almost 1kg for the plate with fasteners. Again, due to bad design (everyone has to install that stupid heavy plate), it's ~4.2kg for each side = only 1kg lighter than a plastic hard case. Hopefully givi will eventually make some soft luggage that fits their own standard mounts instead of making everyone install these weird plates.
@GavCritchley
@GavCritchley 4 жыл бұрын
@@MeOrNotMeWhoKnows OK...so you're not a fan. What are you going to use instead? I have TRK's and they are just too heavy. They weigh more than the contents. Interested to know your thoughts.
@MeOrNotMeWhoKnows
@MeOrNotMeWhoKnows 4 жыл бұрын
@@GavCritchley For now I'll just stick with TRK33 cases. I'd like to have something lighter too, but 1kg savings per side is just not enough difference for me. And there's no way I'm gonna be putting those plates on and off every time I switch between hard and soft luggage. I don't plan to replace my TRK's though as you do, I'm just looking for lighter soft luggage for some trips while still keeping the plastic cases for others. If you don't need your TRK's and you're looking for soft luggage to replace your plastic cases with, then maybe these GRT709 will work for you just fine - you'll only have to install those plates once after all. This season is almost over for me anyway, the next multi-thousand km trip is only happening in April 2020 (and that's likely to be Georgia and Armenia, so plenty of off-road where I'm likely to bring some soft luggage), got a few months to find something suitable. If givi doesn't release any monokey-compatible soft luggage till the next Spring, I'll either go with some other brand, or even try DIY. There's a Russian dude I follow on youtube that went to that region a few times and after struggling with aluminum cases he decided to go with DIY soft luggage next time. Which is ~ $20 in his estimation. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZnGYYWprqposKM&t= I might do something similar, though I'd try to add monokey mounting to those to be able to lock them with just a click, like hard cases do. Not gonna cost me $20, of course, but definitely a lot less than givi asks for GRT709. :)

@@MeOrNotMeWhoKnows I've just watched that Russian guys video. I think he's onto something there. I think they must be 20-25 litre canisters? I'd so a similar thing, but just bolt a sturdy wire mesh frame onto one side, drop that over the monokey studs, and padlock it on. 25 litre canisters are £18 a pair. Then either drop in dry bags or find something else that fits.

Thanks. So far I have not had issues with the mounting plate and I take the bags on and off all of the time. I tend to overload the bags too. I have not dropped the bike with these bags so I am not sure how they will hold up when the bike goes down. I think in a hard enough crash the plate might give but it would have to pretty hard, in my opinion. The ease in which these bags can be taken on and off, the space they provide and functionality has so far been worth it to me over other bags.

Matt how do you find the Canyons 1 year on? how have you found it compares to the Rigg Gear?
@advmatt
@advmatt 4 жыл бұрын
I prefer the Canyon's over the Rigg saddlebags for a bunch of reasons. One, I like to be able to easily remove the bags from the bike. I don't care that it leaves the mounting plate. That doesn't bother me. Two, the open bottle holder compartment on the back of the bags is really useful adding functionality. Three, the nylon outer part of the bag is more abrasion resistant than the Riggs. Four, the Canyons have more space. With that said there are few things have came up since I have been using them. The inner backing plate to the bags has started to sag a bit allowing the bags to droop away from the bike. Its not much, but I notice it. I also had one of the nylon nut covers inside the bags come off and rub a hole through the inner dry bag. It was easily fixed. I have spent a lot of time offroad with these bags and have dropped the bike enough times to know these overall held up better than the Riggs did. I have seen some complaints about these bags that they don't hold up if you have an OFF at speed. I cant' speak to that. If I had to choose between the Canyons and the Riggs, even with the cost difference I would take the Canyons. Overall I think the Canyons are a more useful and functional option. I hope this helps. Cheers.

Hi Matt Re mounting brackets on the givis do you think they would fit on the SW Motech pro panniers. As they are not tubular..are the mounting brackets wide enough to cover that? Just can't find any info on these bags and the racks I have installed.
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 жыл бұрын
I just pulled out one of the spare inner clamps. The widest rack it will accept is 1 1/4" or approximately 32mm. The depth is 1/4" or 6.35mm. I looked at this pannier rack and I think there are ways to adapt the plate but it will take some engineering. These plates won't bolt up using the brackets. I do think you might be able to remove the tabs on the rack and use those spots to attach the mounting plate. It might require a little drilling. Hope this helps.
