To the peron who hates their job - start mining this experience to know where to look next. Do you like your coworkers? Why? Do you like the work environment? Do you like anything about what you're actually doing? And the opposite of all those questions. Don't be general at all, get really specific. "I hate working in a cubicle, but I like having a full hour for lunch." Then you'll have a list of green and red flags for your next job.

teddy is seemingly not a girl. they use they/them pronouns. besides, being gender neutral with your verbiage is easier anyways. your first sentence should say "to the person who hates their job" !

This is such solid advice. 👍🏻

great advice… i wrote this all down for me too HAHAHAH!! & also i include peoples pronouns so that we can all address each other in a way that feels comfortable for all of us. so like the above person said, especially if they/them pronouns are being used, it’s best to use gender neutral wording 🫶🏾🩵

@@riaynchristina ok, I admit it - I was half listening to this video while driving my car. Then I came back later to post some advice, to try to help someone out. I wasn't paying attention to details (note that I didn't name names). I wasn't trying to be malicious.

To teddy: as someone who is in academia (getting my PhD in school psychology) there is so much more to education that is NOT research! IF you’re interested in staying in the academy, there are universities that primarily value teaching over research quotas! There is also the option to disseminate your knowledge through high school courses or community colleges! Granted everything i just said was more about teaching, but since research was top of mind for you initially, this is often the other side of the coin that comes with that in academic spaces that I feel we aren’t encouraged to explore! Wishing you the best of luck in finding yourself and what will click for you in this next season of life! ❤

To Teddy: don’t stress out too much! You are not tied to your field. Explore opportunities in other sectors after your contract ends. A degree in Chemistry means you’ve gain problem solving and analytical related skills, which are super transferable! Start thinking about the skills you’ve developed with your education background and work experience to this point and how you can market those skills to other kinds of jobs. I think we have this perception that everyone chooses a career path and stays there forever, but sooo many people change career paths no matter their age or educational background. Do some research online, maybe Reddit, and see what other people with Chem degrees have ended up doing. Your career will end up being more about your experience and skills than the actual degree you have, especially as you get older. You got this!!!

To add on to this (as someone who is also in academics/STEM), if you feel comfortable, talk with your PI/supervisor! They might have some good insights for you. Or even ask about how they got to where they are, how they found/got into their field of interest (VERY often, the path is not linear). Also, they might have past students that have gone on to industry, government positions, non-profits, etc. They might be able to connect you to someone so you can chat about their work.

Oh hey (I’m teddy) thank you so much for your advice!! This really helped reassure me and I think it’s such a good idea to talk to my PI and the other people in my lab who don’t work on the same type of project I am and have had experiences outside of academia/research (there’s a pretty big variety it seems, but it’s hard to talk with them in the summer bc most have been gone). I think once the Fall semester starts up I’ll have more opportunities to talk outside my discipline.

To the girl who is having dreams about her ex: dreams only mean as much as you let them. I once had a dream about my boyfriend’s coworker (scandalous, I know), that doesn’t mean I want to actually be with him! You are absolutely NOT cheating, so don’t feel that way!

If Teddy is watching/reading, hello from a fellow STEM girlie! I'm currently a biology grad student and advice I got when I was just starting out (and going through a similar experience!) is to talk to people in your department/institution about what other jobs are out there. There are lots of science jobs that aren't in research/academia; I didn't realize how many until I started asking around! Also remember that part of a postbac position should be to see if you like it. Now you know--you don't! And that's okay :) There are better things to come!
@tedddybear4 ай бұрын
(This is teddy) thank you for your advice!! I’ve had such a non traditional pathway to where I am so sometimes it feels like I don’t have the “right” to ask questions about “things I should know” when logically that’s silly-ofc I can ask questions to the people in my department and I don’t owe it to them to be the perfect post bac researcher who wants to eventually apply for a phd in this exact field/school etc. I think I need to suck it up and have a meeting with my PI about finding what type of science job I am really interested in beyond this job. Thank you 💕

To the person uncertain about their future sometimes just the degree is what’s needed. I’m in a completely different field than my degree. But I would never have found the job I have without my degree. Also I grew so much in college which helped me in my career. I’m not in my dream job but I’m happy and have balance in my life. What I thought was my dream job and degree were a true nightmare.

Omg I’m so loving Riayn’s Room! I gotta send you some tea for advice! To the girl who dreams about her ex - firstly Riayn’s advice is solid! Perfecto! I still have thoughts or dreams about two particular exes and they are long ago exes. I can promise you it’s not your fault and it absolutely happens naturally. My case is the opposite in terms of them being exes for good reason & I don’t want to even think of them (even with my most recent ex I did on occasion)… I think it’s possible as Riayn said that things randomly make us think of them then our brain runs with it. So long as your happy & it’s only dreams - be gentle on yourself! Congrats on you engagement too!

To Teddy: maybe consider branching out Chemistry is very broad and you shouldn’t feel stuck to research Take the time to explore and if chemistry truly isn’t for you, feel free to explore and take leaps of faith Also check what you don’t like about it. Sometimes it’s not the career itself but the environment I.e place, people etc Reevaluate everything
