Harley engines have a simple order to upgrade in that's going to save you time and money while giving you fresh power to enjoy. The most cost effective way is always cash up front and going all out at once. Like many and myself included that's not exactly always possible, so building as time and budged allows is a must. But getting the build done on the motor in a specific order will allow you to avoid paying labor charges and or touching the same parts twice.

Just some advice if don't have all the money for what you want save your money and buy one part or kit at a time then when you have all parts bought then do it and that's if you are paying a Mechanic it will save you quite a bit of money on labor doing everything at 1 time and that way you can do your research on what you want to add to your big bore or whatever you decide to do When I got started with my 128 kit was planning on about $3500 Time I got done adding everything I was pushing over $8000 So when you start a project do your research for some time buy your parts overtime Just some friendly advice.

I usually start with a frame I find at a swap meet. LOL. Build a roller. Always a chopper so not needing much. Then I find an old beat up shovel or pan. When I say beat up I do mean BEAT UP. Eventually its a rolling running headache. And its NEVER finished. Last week I was staring at one of my ironhead chops and realised it needed a sissy bar, P pad. passenger pegs and highway pegs. 2 days of cutting and welding and some rattle can paint later its now a 2 up chopper instead of a one person bobber.

I only went to stage one air filter complete exhaust (CAT delete) and a tune hoping it would have the power I needed for two-up touring because I had an extended warranty to deal with. It didn't so once I hit 60,000 miles I refreshed my cam chest along with a cam for heavy bikes and of course a dyno tune once again. I'm now at 125,000 and still very happy with how my engine performs.

Great info as always. It's a money thing with me. When I bought my Street Glide in '06 I was still working and had more money than time. I paid a good independent shop to install a Zippers torque king kit and Rinehart true duels. So all at once on that bike. Now that I'm retired and relatively poor, it's one step at a time on this Soft Tail. I would rather do the work myself, so I don't mind. I never had much money in my younger days so except for that one time I've always worked on my own stuff. I trust in my abilities and get a sense of satisfaction in doing it myself.

If you buy a used bike, make sure you start with finding out what you already have. I just bought a 2000 Sportster 883 to get back into riding and found out it already had straight pipes and a K&N air filter. I swapped out the straight pipes for a set of Screamin' Eagles I got from my dad. I am definitely upgrading in stages as I am in the same boat. Not enough cash flow. End game is a 1275 Hammer Kit with ported heads and Hammer .570 lift Jackhammer cams. Lots of other stuff to upgrade along the way.

That's my favorite Sportster setup, 1275 with the 570 cam. Keeps the compression down and you have a ton of usable power. The 560 cam with higher compression in a 1275 makes a lot of horsepower but it's way up on top.

🛑🛑 Gix....Just got out on my 2016 CVO Limited after taking the CVO 110 to a Stage 4 build using the Harley Davidson 117 Race Kit, S&S True Duels, Rinehart 4” Mufflers, and Harley’s 57 mm Intake (we talked after you video “Untapped Potential”) ...Let’s just say the bike is “Stupid Fast and Stupid Powerful” 😂👍💯 Power numbers are 120 Horse and 120 pounds of Torque. While 2 up-riding, the bike is simple with no downshifting looking for “passing power”, just role the throttle and let it gooooooooooooo😀👍 The bike feels like it could burn the tire off while in motion, in 4th gear, while solo riding. When you “jump on the throttle”, the front comes up, and the bike pins you to the back of the seat😂. The motor is still breaking in, but I can say moving from the Stock 110 Twin Cam, to the 117 Race Kit “is a game changing upgrade”!!!😂 Thanks for all your videos. Keep the Info Coming Our Way💯👍

I bought my 2010 FXSTC new and it's been a great bike. Far from my first Harley but this is my first twin cam and I'm impressed how trouble free it's been. I'm an old geezer and for a variety of reasons I want to soup up this bike with me doing most if not all of the work. I am hardly a skilled mechanic but I've been wrenching on Harleys and clunker cars since I was in my early teens. I am just now seeing this video but my first step was to install an FP3 on my bone stock bike to sort of baseline it. I didn't notice a huge improvement but it seemed like it ran better. Since then I have done the slipons and an arlen ness air cleaner. Bike definitely sounds better and has a lot more punch to it. Why or how did I wait so long to do this? So next step is a complete upgrade to the cam chest. cams, bearings, better tensioners, high flow oil pump. I'd prefer to wait until Winter just in case I run into problems... since the bike is running great I want to enjoy it before tearing it apart. I do enjoy working on my bikes and I have more confidence when I am out on the road since I know more about the condition of everything since I'm the only one who touched something.... or didn't touch/check something. I have zero interest in any M8 so I guess I'll be spending whatever is left of my life with grease under my nails :)

One thing I feel you could have mentioned on this particular one that’s (to me at least) extremely important when building up your bike...rebuild, weld and true the bottom end. I know a little bit from experience plus I'm an Electro-mechanical engineer. I ride a 2015 touring now that was supposed to be a "built bike"....It's a champ but really loud... I'm not impressed enough yet to buy an M8, regardless of the displacement. I like your approach. I think I want to make my 2015 run forever...Although, I may buy a new quieter one to ride my wife around on Sundays...like we did today. I think the big first step that is missing is have a nice long talk with an experienced, qualified builder before you spend several hundred on anything. Things like make sure to get an exhaust that will perform well with the build you are looking at. Tons of little things at play here and if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can easily turn out with a result that doesn’t make you happy. So if you know you are going to be building up, talk to a reputable builder before spending a dollar on upgrades.

I did it all at once (128", cam, full exhaust, extreme flow intake, PV2), got a special tuning map from Fuel Moto, and didn't have it dyno tuned. That last decision came to bite me in the a$$. @@GixxerFoo I have a FP3 which was not my first choice. I planned to go the Dynajet route but they decided to obsolete their flagship model. My bike does not have a CAN bus and the FP3s were selling out quickly so I had to pull the trigger on one. So far it's worked out well but I have to say that V&H support is *HORRIBLE*! Most of the techs don't seem to know anything and they try to snow you with a lot of blather that sounds really intelligent unless you actually know how fuel mapping works. They have so far been completely unresponsive. I asked to talk with a supervisor and so far the supervisor refuses to reply. So V&H has make themselves radioactively toxic to me. So far, the maps I've been using work ok but they have none for my actual configuration. The ECU seems to have settled into sane long term fuel trims and the bike runs really well. I'm a bit concerned about staying with V&H as I move towards a cam chest upgrade given that they will likely be MIA if I need help. Bottom line: FP3 is better than I thought it would be. V&H support is the absolute dregs. I'm managing it with a Samsung tablet btw.

First of all, you have to decide what you want the bike to do, and where you expect to run the rpms. Too many guys look for max hp at 6000 rpms and up, On a sporty 7000. But how often do you really max out the rpms? I set up my sporty to make max hp, but it didn't come on till I was above 4500 than katey bar the door.A lot of fun but not really a good day to day bike. I set up my LowRider to make max torque a around 3000 -4000, right where i really needed it during normal riding and it works great for me. Also, if you are looking at a big bore and later getting a lot of headwork done pick out who is going to do the heads, talk to him and find out what he needs as far as pistons. When he does the heads he will have to set the compression and will need to know the piston head height and dome shape to meet your requirements. In short, know what you really want, talk to the guy who will tune the bike and he will do the best he can to meet your expectations. If you are going for max hp on a twincam he may suggest that you talk to Darkhorse to make sure your crankshaft can handle it. Going fast costs a lot, so spend wisely.

First! First! First! Get it where you feel comfortable riding it. If you are not comfortable you will not ride it. It will sit in the garage and will become a low mileage sell to someone that will appreciate your loss. If you don't feel comfortable you will not even want to upgrade it to begin with. Get the seat where you want it, the bars where you are comfortable holding on to it, leg position where you are not cramped up or barely reaching the controls. Doing a test ride will gloss over comfort flaws because you are wanting to get a bike. I had a garage sitter. Handlebars were too far forward/low and my knees were above my hips. Forward controls and raised bars made it an everyday rider. Now I am spending money on tires and oil!

I am waiting for a video that explains what H.D. did beginning with the twin cam re; the shotty, cheap, pressed flywheel. This has been the cause of multiple serious issues. After much research, I had my flywheel true'd, welded and balanced by Darkhorse. Then anything you spend is building on a proper foundation. My opinion is that H.D. has been building a overpriced home on a sand foundation for 20+ years.I am amazed at how many H.D. riders I talk to that do not understand the "runout" issues these pressed flywheels have. It has caused issues on both ends of the bike. Yes, it was expensive as I paid for the motor work. My point is that the more power you add coupled with aggressive driving,(fun, fun) can make the crank runout even worse, magnifying an already bad issue even worse. Maybe you have already touched on this and I missed it. It was your video on cam upgrades that got me going in the 1st place. I found a great s&s pro-tune dealer to help me. That is when I decided to go all in. I am now stage 3 on a very sound, smooth power plant. Thanks. Keep the video's coming. I really like your style.

Ignitions can really be hit or miss on those bikes. Dynatec is a a pretty good one, with aftermarket ignitions it seems like they have more failures. New bikes have a very very lean tune to meet emission requirements. I bought a new one in 2016 and it was super lean. It was apparent it felt like it was starving for fuel and it would stutter and cough back through the throttle body. Definite sign of being lean, road for a year like that and tuned it with a FuelPak 3, major improvement! Difference was night and day on it, but the new M8 does handle the lean tune much much better.

@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend the Power Vision if you have multiple bikes between 2007 and 2012. You can buy a license and tune your other bikes for about 200 bucks, save you buying another tuner. The FP3 is way easier to use but you would need another tuner for a different bike. Both are very capable but the Power Vision is easier to get tuned on a dyno. They are about the same price now and both do the same thing, just PV is more accepted by dyno tuners with their heavy investments in it.

Yeah they both have the J-1850 electrical system. 2014 they went to can-bus and that's a different connection. So the Power Vision would work for both bikes, you would have to buy a license which is like 200 bucks or so for another bike. A lot cheaper than another 450 for an additional tuner.

With a flash tuner I need to take the bike to a dyno correct? What about an auto tuner like Thundermax? Excuse my ignorance, but if I put the Thundermax on, won't it tune the bike pretty close by itself? I guess the question that I have is can I use the same thundermax tuner over and over again as I make upgrades for better performance piece by piece?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 6 ай бұрын
If you have a flash tuner you can map your bike yourself with a map that matches your setup, same thing with the ThunderMax. When you buy one if you have a basic setup like exhaust, air cleaner, maybe a cam or big bore kit depending where you buy the tuner life Fuel Moto for example they will send it preloaded with a map to match your specs for you to flash. Now if you have head work, something they can't exactly match perfectly you'll need to take it to a tuner with a dyno.

A canned tune from a Power Vision or a FuelPak3 would do wonders for your bike, night and day difference after a tune. They run a lot cooler when they are getting some fuel. The M8 does run a lot better with the leaner air fuel ratios from the factory than the twin cam, I am assuming you are under warranty so Screamin Eagle Street Tuner is the one to use to keep your warranty intact. The Screamin Eagle tuner still has the lean air fuel ratio but it will adjust the proper parameters for your mufflers and air cleaner.

Check your crank runout first. I think the S&S plate and pump only allow a tolerance of up to .005. They allow for much less slop than the stock and if your crank isn’t true enough you’ll do more harm than good with the S&S. Is the S&S better? Yes. Is stock sufficient? Yes again.
