Stock Harley Heads do vary by years but fortunately the one the most important changes made it all the way to the end of production. Early Twin cam heads weren't bad but they had some issues we would of rather done without. Carbon build up was an issue over time, as carbon build it up it choked off the flow on an already somewhat poorly designed head. Harley-Davidson took a pay out of the Buell play book and applied it to the stock harley heads on the twin cam engines.

Took a friend's 2002 Electra glide from 88 inch to 98 inch 10:1 compression, Wood 555 cams, I found 2014 heads with electric compression releases with 2000 miles. Mild port, opened bowls for 1.90 Manley intakes and 1.625 exhaust, stock springs. Air cleaner and pipes/mufflers upgrade. Brian at Valley Racing in Beacher IL tuned the bike, Perfect! Over a 100 horsepower and over 110lb-ft torque at the tire. Later heads are the way to go! The compression releases hooked to the start solenoid didn't work. Dropped compression to 80 psi cranking. 185 psi wasn't an issue w/o compression releases so disconnected.

Where was this information 20 years ago, when I bought my bike? Or 5 years ago when I had it rebuilt? I treat my TC 88 as an "advanced Knucklehead", it burns a little oil, it's not fast but it runs and sounds great and I love it😊 By the way, I love your videos, I'm not into performance stuff, but still they are very well done and interesting!

2005 heads are the only ones you don’t want, they were the worst flowing and corrected in 2006. You wouldn’t know until you swapped them out. A lot of guys swap them for 06 take offs and why there is an abundance of 05 heads on eBay.

Excellent information! I'm going to stick to my EVO as long as I can, but if I run across a great deal on a TC it is good to know the pros & cons of the early years vs later. I'm aware of the problems with the crankshafts and bearings on the later years, but had no idea they changed the heads for the better in 05. As an EvO guy it seems the best TC combo would be an early lower end with upgraded heads? Longevity, reliability and ease and cost of maintenance are my primary concerns.

I also have a 2015 CVO Rushmore I did the 117 big bore kit from Harley on and had the heads “freshened up “ and ported along with the SE cam plate and oil pump. A couple of guys I know that did the same kit and substituted the cams that came with the kit for 585s but did nothing with the heads. My Dyno came out at 124/128 however theirs showed considerably less power. I chose to stay with all Harley parts for the build just because I felt they work well together and it’s paid off for me. That was at 52k miles and the bike now has 69k miles on it. No problems. So that’s what my experience has been. Thought you’d like to know.

It seems to me to have heads ported and polished for $950(at S&S) and if a mechanic had pulled them and puts them back on at $160 an hour it is not worth it. If the heads were removed to do a top end build over to me at $950(at S&S) to get 5 to 6 HP it is not worthy. Especially if you have the new type twin cam heads.

Raises the question of if the 05 heads are direct bolt on for the 04 and below... aside from the engine mount pads machined into them. Also the intake flanges are different but just change rhe intake and you'd be good I guess. Would they bolt on? Some would say the diff in flow would be negligible between that and 04 and blow heads that are ported, but to that I'd say why wouldn't you just have the 05+ units ported just the same and make them even better. Again pointless if they wouldn't just bolt up.

All the things you talked about are true but the biggest problem with TC heads up to 2006 is the exhaust port is to small an 883 sportster has a bigger port & if you want to go with big valves & you are running 7 mm valves the biggest you will find is 1.900 so if you want high lift beyond bolt in you will have to change the guides back to 5/16 where you can find valves past the 2 inch mark !

@@gaknskk Not sure yet. Thinking of the Zippers Torque cam for a Stage 2, but really it depends on the runout on the crankshaft at the time of order, because if possible I would prefer a gear-driven cam. On my TC88 I installed a set of S&S gear-driven torque cams and really enjoyed the performance and the "noise" truly was not an issue. I also installed a set of gear-driven torque cams on my TC96.

Awesome and informative video, bud! I have an 07 TC motor , 1450 and I hear that adding an EBS (exterior breathing system to the motor can cause carbon build up to burn off plus it will make the motor run cooler and more efficiently. This is important because the twin cam design tends to run a bit hotter than its recommended. You can run tubing off of the exaughst ports through the backer plate of the air breather, join them together with a Y and send it down to a vented catch can. I learned this from DK Custome, a great channel, like yours.
@peteryeanacopolis2037
@peteryeanacopolis2037 Жыл бұрын
I have to agree with the EBS controlling/eliminating the introduction of hot oxygen depleted air being recirculated back into the TB and ultimately resulting in carbon buildup changing your tune. When I did my 110 to 117 big bore kit on my 2015 CVO RG I installed the Trask assault breather along with their EBS system. The result is that I see absolutely nothing in the plexiglass cover and TB when I remove the filter for cleaning and wipe the velocity stack with a white paper towel so the EBS theory definitely works. Not a neck jerker after the EBS install but a noticeable improvement in throttle response.

@@robbaar7035 Curious about the cost/benefit scenario: 02’ - 06’ - A Zippers 95” kit is a little over 3K. You can add a gear drive cam gear set for another $600. 99’ - 01’ - 95” is $3,800. (This kit requires you send cylinder cores for boring) The S&S 100ci kit is only $1400. Complete bolt on. No machining needed. Looking at the dyno sheets - S&S 100ci 113 peak torque @ 3,900rpm then drops 100 peak HP @ 5,300 to 5,500rpm then drops Zippers 95ci 109 peak torque @ 3,200 to 5,000rpm. Starts to drop gradually after 5,250rpm. 112 peak HP @ 5,750 to 6,250rpm. Climbs throughout the rpm band and holds to 6,250rpm. Graph ends there. I think the S&S is way better in terms of cost but it looks like Zippers gets you a more performance oriented machine with a smaller displacement.

There is a big difference in the 2005 vs 2006 castings. 2005 yes moved to 7mm but still the -99 casting which exhaust flow was horrible. 2006 (-06) castings were a new port design that greatly increased the flow from the -99. So if you have 99-05 heads (anything with -99 casting) should be set on the shelf for a 2006 or new -06 casting.

I have a 2016 UL 103 H.O. Just a lil’hotter cam from factory.. what’s a good cam for this motor ? I know the H.O. Part of my 103 was more hype then anything…. Little more compression with the wet heads and a lil’better cam, but not sure of performance over normal 103 if any..

I've got a question, I have a '04 Heritage. When it had 120,000 miles on it I took advantage of the "Long block" program and got a 95" engine with a 204 cam. Of course it has the cam tensioners upgrade, but I can't really find out anything about the engine! What exactly do I have??
@getoffmygrass6974
@getoffmygrass6974 Жыл бұрын
Long block is a full crate engine. Before CVO in 2000, the SE version was a 95” from the factory. The stroke remains the same at 4” whether you have an 88” or 95” those years. The difference is the pistons are bigger and jugs are bored. Basically it’s just a Big Bore kit on an 88”. So if your cases are matching numbers than you got a big bore kit stage 3. Head work will bring you to stage 4.

Nothing really serious to worry about, 01 has the Timken lower end which is awesome. The you can always run some top end cleaner decarbon through the inkae and clean up that carbon.

Stock heads sent to zippers or similar they will work your heads on a one to one basis instead of mass produced S&S or screaming Eagle one size fits all. I had zippers do my heads for how I ride my bagger in 2000to 5000 rpm

At what number is a cam considered high lift? I've heard generally it is considered.590 is the maximum lift on stock 05+ valve springs before needing to change them out. Have a set of Woods 222 ready to go into a 15 Streetglide Special and am considering CR 570-2 or S&S 583 for the 08 Rocker C.

@@johnliotta2583 thanks. I'm putting them in with stock springs. Until something "breaks" anyway. Bolt in is bolt in right. How do you find the 583's? Most people (Softails and Dynas) just go straight to the 585's. I'm more interested in torque than horsepower.

Does anyone ever question why Harley has design issues which given the fact that they have been making cycles for a 100yrs should not be happening ? Bad head design, oil pumps, lifters etc ??? Maybe they need a engineering dept house cleaning. Every manufacturer has a design that does not work out but we are talking about a 100 yr old engine design. They should be like a Lycoming Aircraft engine by now which are old school design but bullet proof. I dont get it.
