The 88 to 95 is far superior to the 96 it has too many problems compared to the 88 it has to be switched to gear drive only ! As far as the compensator goes the early twin cams have basically an evo style comp that is far superior to the 96 comp & the screaming chicken comp . I have welded up & changed to a solid sprocket on more than my fair share !!!!!!

My wife and me have took many week-long trips on it through the Smoky Mountains several times. Been in 17 different states a lot of them States several times. The bike now has 122,457 Mi on it. I have always run 20 W 50 Lucas full synthetic oil and a K&N oil filter. It does not use oil it does not smoke it pulls as good as it ever did. Still 88 cubic inch. Cylinders have never been touched. Cam chains and tensioners have been changed three times. Oil pump and lifters two times, cam 1 time it has an Andrews torque cam. It's long trip are over my wife cannot ride. I am 73 years old and still put 5,951 Mi on it in 2023 just day riding with my buddies. Had a right knee replacement October 25th I would have had more miles than that. It has been a great bike. I love it. Be careful, ride safe.

I owned one Shovel and I was happy to get rid of it. Started riding EVO’s and loved them….still great engines for what they are. Bought a new 1999 Dyna Convertible with the 88 Twin Cam….unfortunately at 9,000 miles; the cam bearings went out in the middle of nowhere. Got rid of that bike as it was at the shop getting fixed. Ruined me on Twin Cams and I went back to my tried and true EVO’s. Then, Harley seriously updated the touring bikes in 2010 and they got the 103. Great touring bikes and so much better than earlier models. My opinion, the 103 is much improved over the earlier Twin Cams and is still powerful right out of the factory. Having said that, my EVO powered bikes put a bigger smile on my face.

I also added in a Darkhorse Compensator Eliminator, and a Rekluse Clutch and a Haden Primary Chain tensioner. I haven't added it yet: but I do have a larger Oil Pan from Baker to increase total amount of oil for the engine to draw on for lubrication and cooling.. I did add on Wilber's suspension and a Mustang seat and a Klockwerks screen....the seat with it's back rest and the Wilbers suspension. Made a huge difference in terms of comfort. Running S&S 551 cams and put in a Thundermax ECM with wide band O2 sensors. Push Rods are stock - decided against adjustable push rods. Added Heated Grips, going to add a Center Stand and Fog Lights.

I installed a woods 222 cam set and lifters. Fuel Moto quickie push rods. And a power vision with fuel Moto tune on it. I’m running a bassani road rage 2-1. The 96” is making about 107hp and I chose the 222 cam for the down low power for running the touring bike. I’m very happy that it pulls like a freight train at a 55mph roll on in 6th gear. And the motor pulls hard from a little better than idle on to 6000. In my opinion the smaller grinds work very well in these heavy bikes. I recently acquired a 2007 Fatboy 96" engine - all bone stock, bike had 1,820 miles on it! I am just planning a cam chest upgrade, S&S billet cam plate and oil pump, new cam bearings, a pair of Woods TW-222, S&S lifters & "quickie" push rods. Also, breathing, upgrading air cleaner, and losing the cats, installing free flowing exhaust with crossover. Add a tune to pull it together. I am thinking that those mods will get me mid to high 90's hp, and a taste over 100 foot pounds of torque. Already covered primary chain adjuster to a more manual that can't over tighten, (trying the M6 type), and am ordering a sprocket. Not sure which supplier as yet, still researching. Leaving the rest factory stock, and see how she rolls. Always another winter ahead - who knows what the future holds, bore and compression upgrades? A maybe. I am 70 now, and think this round of upgrades will get me what I am shooting for. Opinions? Comments welcome ..... Thanks to all you Gixxerfoo fans, and of course, the channel.

I have a 2000 Fat Boy with the SE 88 to 95 with SE ported heads, SE 204 cams, Rinehart 2-into-1 exhaust and S&S Super E carb. It is much faster in all aspects than my 2000 EFI Road King that has V&H dresser duals and stage 1 breather.

Ride your older bike with no more than a cam swap until 50k miles, then buy a S&S 111 motor.. they come with 585 cams and run awesome for about $7500 bucks.. Then sell your still running 96 for $2000-2500 bucks.. Its cheaper and smarter than dumping tons of money into the top end and hoping the crank won't go bad.. The 111 runs circles around most all my buddies bikes and sounds like a beast..

Great overview of what I’ve been through on my 07 RKC I’ve owned since new. Trans went out at 70k stockish motor, in went DD7. Woods 555, S&S pump and plate and rebuild of cam chest came together following year. Then 2 years ago did a Fuel Moto 107 w all S&S parts, CP Carrillo pistons. Last summer I upgraded clutch and Baker tensioner on a rainy day. Crossing into the 100k club, extra power and gear is nice but that cam swap was the most bang for the buck. Great video.

Also have the 07 RKC, been looking at the Fuel Moto 107 (10.25:1). Wood 555 gave best bang though?
@benodie027608 ай бұрын
@@roberttrimble6361 I love it.. definitely do the s&s cam plate and oil pump if you can swing it. I had done the baker dd7 a couple years before. I sent the heads to zippers as part of the upgrade. The woods cam really changed bike also.

I've got both, and no I don't want to go bigger with my 88B. Yes I have changed the 88B to a gear drive and changed the cam, pushrods, pipes, carb and ignition. But it still has the standard cam plate and oil pump, and will probably never need any of those expensive replacement parts as it has the tried and tested Timken roller bearings. The 96B has just had the slip-ons changed, K&N filter and its got a SE Super Tuner. But my 88B will leave my 96B standing when it matters.

@benodie02760 Жыл бұрын
I did everything he mentioned as miles accumulated on my 07. New trans, top end, clutch etc etc. The most bang for the buck was an easy to install Woods 555 cam, I ended up doing oil pump and plate from S&S while in there.

Does the tc96 compensator/chain tensioner / clutch issues still occur when left stock ? What about after just doing a stage one and a set of mild cams nothing crazy?

I had purchased new 2 96"ers, an 07 and an 09, the performance difference between the 2 as stock was huge which I found interesting. Neither stayed stock for long tho.

Pretty big difference on the gear drive, timing is more accurate and you don't have to worry about tensioner shoes but you sure gotta make sure the crank is true.

I’ve got the same bike. Stone reliable. I rode a 1999 Glide for 13 yrs and never had a problem with it. This 08 96” has WAY more two up passing power than the 88” ever had. No comparison all around. Like you I did an air cleaner, tuner and true duals. More than pleased. Runs like a top.

My first bike was a Victory Hammer, with the 100" OHC engine. My first Harley, and my current bike, is a 16 Road Glide Ultra with the 103 HO. While I don't feel that it's as fun as the Hammer was, I see the potential for more power if I decide that down the road. With almost 90k miles on it, I'll probably have to completely tear it down if I got that route. I do miss my Hammer though, that bike was just plain angry and handled so much better.

Looking to buy a converted trike. It has a 96 engine with a Mackie Engineering 510 cam set, adding torque from Idle to 5500 rpm. No info as yet on whether there was any other engine mods. It has approx 37k total miles on the bike. Any compensator besides a Screaming Eagle you would recommend?
@GixxerFoo5 ай бұрын
If you're going to do it I would go with a Dark Horse Compensator Eliminator with the rubber damper, that damper is serviceable too as well. Less bs and moving parts to deal with, they will hold up to some stupid horsepower and torque too.
@phishin8111 ай бұрын
My 96 is mostly stock other than exhaust, intake and tuner. I addressed the compensator (eliminator) and the tensioner (Hayden) last year so I'm thinking I'm ready for cams. I'd like to do a big bore at some point but I think doing cams first then riding it till that gets boring would be more fun. Then maybe I'll go to the 110.
@Clutch_Kick18711 ай бұрын
Woods 222 or S&S EZ start 583 or 551 are awesome.. you never have to downshift anymore.. if you really think your gonna go with a 110 in the future, get S&S 585 ez start.. they will work pretty good with stock bore and heads, but will be perfect for the upgraded bore.. Torque cams like the first I listed won't be enough cam for the bigger bore.. and with the 585's your only giving up 3-5hp until you upgrade.. Your low rpm torque just wont be as high, but that's what I wish I did. I bought 583's and now replacing them for 585's since i'm moving to a fuel moto 107 kit with higher compression. The ez start s&s cams are great in 96's since they don't have auto compression releases like the 103in and newer bikes have. They start like stock and save you from burning starters or drilling and tapping in compression releases into your stock heads..

Looking to beef up my 08 Dyna Low Rider 96" with some cams this year. I have a stage 1 dyno tuned with bigger breather and V&H Big Radius pipes. Dunno how far down the rabbit hole I'll go with it, but cams for sure. Looking at Woods specifically, mostly just booting around town and some shorter highway hops.

Thinking about buying a used TC 96 to replace the 88 on my 05RG. I do all of my wrenching so the cost to buy, go through and replace makes sense. I figure that I can look ahead before I really need it. Then, I can rebuild (really upgrade) the 88 for back stock. Thanks for the great content. I always look forward to your vids. cb

09 Ultra (96 twin cam) with stock everything.......except this list: slip ons, oil cooler, external breather, after market air filter, opened up air filter backing plate, ViED inline for fuel enrichment, compensator eliminator, and finally the factory chain tensioner swapped out. I would not trade it for much more. Whatever might get added in later would be dependent upon what parts need replacement/what is available from my local bike shop. They may have some good factory takeoffs from builds, and those would suit me fine if needed.
