Sportster big bore kits offer major performance increases for both the Sportster 883 and Sportster1200, but who makes these kits and where do you start? Were going to answer those questions in this video by taking a look at 4 different companies producing Sportster Big bore kits. NRHS, S&S Cycle, Revolution Performance and Hammer Performance offer a wide price range and options vary between each company. We'll look at the pricing and the differences in the products between each company to help you decide which one fits your needs and budget.

S&S makes great exhausts, crate engines and other components, but Hammer's 1275 kit takes the win for Sportster upgrades. Honestly, Hammer leads this market and everyone else is just fighting for scraps. They offer very high quality products, lots of options, real world cutting edge r and d, knowledgeable staff providing friendly service, and fair prices. They are so far beyond the competition there's absolutely no reason to consider anyone or anything else, the best choice is crystal clear as far as big bore kits for a Sportster is concerned: Hammer Performance. I don't work for them and they haven't paid me to promote them, but trust me... if you work with Hammer to modify your bike, you'll be singing the same tune.

As a true Harley Engine Builder, I can honestly say this, that S&S has always rated their performance numbers modestly. Even on the 143 Twin Cam, the real world numbers are much higher than published. The quality is second to none, I can say this honestly as well. No, I don't receive any special treatment from the company, but I truly stand by them. SARGE.

Oh no question S&S is the leader in Harley performance products. I don't doubt for a second they are publishing modest numbers. The specs on that 143 and what they claimed had me scratching my head thinking there's more to the story there.

Huge respect for S&S However for Sportsters, Hammer performance takes the cake. Those guys are phenomenal to work with and because of the 1275 kit are squeezing every last HP out of these engines without boring the cases. Then of course if you do bore the cases you can get even more!

I did Hammer 1250 and will never be more happy with the decision. Even though i have never work with the other companies, the costumer service is amazing with hammer, even in weekends or in the night. If they see your question they will answer via email. One important thing, it depends on the year of your sporty but in most cases you HAVE to buy an ignition module. And it adds at least 300$ more to the numbers for a "basic" conversion.
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 4 жыл бұрын
That's the downside of the "basic package" with the carb bikes is that ignition module, but you gotta get that timing right. Even the fuel injected bikes you'll need a Power Vision for 450 bucks to make sure you don't miss a value on the map they send. Those are awesome, I talked to Aaron about lifters with a cam swap and he was honest with me. He said he has expensive lifters he could sell me if I want but he said I really didn't need them, much respect after that!

When you buy a Harley Davidson you need to consider some things: Your riding style, your size, experience, etc. The Sportster is a good choice if you are a smaller statured person, mainly just do shorter distance rides, etc. Some of the bigger bore Sportys 1200 plus ccs if the motors are done up right, geared right can make good 1/8 mile strip bikes. However if you are a bigger person and you go on longer rides you may want to look into a Big Twin with a longer wheelbase. My first Harley was a 04' carbed 1200 Sporty and it was alot of fun, made good power, etc. However at around 5' 10" 190 pounds I was wanting something bigger like within a year or two. You get beat up more it seems out on the Interstate.

Sportster is a great bike but it is definently a lot harder to run the interstates and go some distance on. It can definently be done and they will do it, no problem there. For sure some much better options out there with the bigger Harleys though.

Legit gonna convert my next Sportster or first Dyna to mid mounts if they have forward mount pegs.

I went with the 1275 kit, with XB heads ported with 190 intake valves, with the 560 cams, S&S Super-G with a thunder jet with a supertrapp 2 into 1 exhaust that I had to remove the baffles out of it because it wouldn't run with it. Fabricated some baffles for the exhaust. Total Beast. One thing you should know though running a S&S carburetor on the 1275 kit you have to cut off three fins on the intake side of the cylinder so you can bolt up to a S&S intake to the heads. They failed to tell you. They claimed they manufacture this with the intention of Mikuni the Mikuni will bolt right up. But I'm running a Super G with a 93 main jet and a 110 thunderjet. Dyna s ignition. Super fast very easy starting also. I recommend going with the carbon fiber clutches with the energy one 15% clutch spring

Great video...I love the content. I looked into the big bore kit for my sportster bobber build, but ended building my own engine out of a few different engines. My engine is a 1988 883cc low end, with a buell xb conversion. The pistons and heads are out of a xb9 engine and are roller rocked, with polished valves and bee hive springs. This particular conversion yields a 12:1 engine compression that's insane. The engine has the Andrew's v4 grind cams that are .0500 lift. It also has the Andrew's 4140 chromoly adjustable pushrods. The roller rockers are made from Jims. The lifters are the original hydraulic lifters for now. The engine has an accel 35496 ignition set up on single fire, and stealth super coils that I'm hoping to use. The bike is running a S&S super E shorty carb with a Kuryaken velociraptor breather as well. I'm looking at getting between 90-100 horsepower at the end of the day. At least that's what I'm hoping for. Like I said before, great content. Thanks again

@thomasbarnardjr9657
@thomasbarnardjr9657 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is. I done it by mistake lol. When I bought the top end, I knew I wanted the XB heads by Buell, but I didn't know anything about the differences between the xb9 and the xb12. And I found a really good deal on the xb9 pistons, cylinders and heads. They were a match set which was perfect. I was aiming to get 10.5:1. What I didn't know is the xb9 was a short stroke engine that utilizes a shorter connecting rod, to rev higher. The pistons have a sizable pop up dome to make up for the loss of compression due to the short stroke connecting rods. After doing some research on the forums, and talking with people about it, I came to find out that quite a few people have done this mod with the xb9 pistons in a standard long stroke 1200 cc engine, and have achieved that 12:1 compression stroke. I may have to go to an even larger set of cams to get enough overlap in the valves to help with that. But I'm hoping that the current set up runs good as it is. There's been a few who've had really good luck with no major issues.

@thakery5720
@thakery5720 4 жыл бұрын
Hammer are the only way to go - they are the leaders in Sportster performance. Both Aaron and Dan are record holding racers that turned their hands to production after a lifetime of experience..... and no, I do not work for or have any association with them other than as a customer - I am in England not the States ! It is a better idea to buy (start with) a 1200 rather than an 883, they are twice the bike from the get-go and if you want to go 1250 or 1275 then the heads are easier to port. 883 heads require a substantial investment to be able to support decent performance gains - 1200 heads less so. It is not worth changing cams and going to 1250 or 1275 - even from a 1200 - unless you get the heads ported. 883 heads are terrible because they are meant for a 3 inch bore cylinder and this means the valves are closer together which stops you putting in the larger valves to enable it to flow enough air. Even 1200 heads do not flow enough air to support 1200cc engines in standard form - look at the Moco's dyno graphs for the 1200. They stop increasing power output at around 4 - 4500rpm and that is where the fun starts. 88 or 90 inch kits require lots of money and make the engine a bit fragile as you will be tempted to use all that power and things will break. It becomes an exercise of diminishing returns - the more you spend the less the relative power gains you get. If you want more power at low revs and never rev it over 4 - 4500rpm then buy a new M8 Softail, but I warn you now :- YOU WILL SOON GET BORED WITH THE POWER LEVELS !!! But then you can invest in doing the engine mods to your Big Twin and the fun really starts ! Where engine mods are concerned, if you have to ask 'What are the prices ?' then you cannot afford it. Power is just as addictive as any drug as it increases your adrenaline levels and that gives you greatest 'high' of all - you cannot get busted for it AND you still have the bike the day after using it !!!!! I have both an '06 XL1200R (now 1250) with about 100 bhp and a 2010 Dyna Streetbob (now 113") with over 130 bhp. The Dyna is the better bike for long journeys as it is faster AND more comfortable whereas the Sporty is so much fun I cannot bring myself to part with it !

It sucks that the 1450 kit, from what you stated, will make the engine fragile. I was considering getting one, if I could ever afford it, for my 2003 Sportster. I would like to make my Sportster able to handle the weight of metal hardbags a and an FXR Fairing, and I'd like to be able to ride it long distances, with ease. Also, I had heard that 883s were better to start with, because of the cams, but I don't know. Yeah, Aaron and Dan seem like pretty cool guys. Aaron was helpful, in his replies, when I was asking questions. He also told me that it's better to do the work on their kits, by yourself, because they screw it up, at the shops. They even have instructions, which is great for me.

I had holes in the knees of my jeans before it was ' A Thing', but I saved up and got my cams, then valves and springs, etc. ! You can have it all, just NEVER quit !! @@clintwoodruff1187 Sounds like you are talking about Ironhead Sportys along with the Shovel.... well I have no experience of owning either - friends have and spent too much time and money rebuilding them after trying to stay with more modern bikes..... I had the same situation with Brit bikes - I could make them 'run with the crowd' but was always having to work on them as the older stuff cannot cut it with todays traffic and demands.I wanted a more modern bike but just couldn't afford it - until I realised that the constant attention and parts purchases added up to more hassle than buying a newer, more reliable bike.... but each to their own ! I did 'swap bikes' on a ride out with a friend once, he on a 1983 Ironhead and me on a (lowly) 1990 883 Evo four speed Sporty.... hadn't gone more than a mile when I stopped and got my bike back. The Ironhead felt like something from the 1930's..... and it was so mechanically noisey that I just didn't wanna know.... Did you notice that at no point there was I ever personally offensive about your comment ? That trap-door tranny was quite a problem - it was a legacy from the old (35bhp) K models from the early 1950'sand Harley dropped it when they went to the rubbermount bikes, probably due to cheaper (and easier) production along with being stronger overall. It seems like a better idea, as I remember my fourspeed was often in need of tranny work after I increased the power to about 85bhp, yet my '06 XL1200R with the Hammer parts (producing a reliable 100bhp ! ) has just turned 70k miles without a single issue so..... My brother bought 1200 kit at Harley store, had it put on at Harley store, then started going thru stators...... everyone that knows says it couldn't have anything to do with changing '89 883 to 1200......but I think the compensator for the 883 was not good enough for 1200, first time giving it gas (and you will give it gas, otherwise you'd be happy with 883) the stator gets its teeth jarred and there goes a magnet. I'm on the side of thinking if Harley thought there should be 50 more CC's they'd put'em in there Another brother got that bike in 2013, had lots of work done(because it sit for nearly 20yrs) and of course 1200 kit had nothing to do with it and he had new 1200 jugs and pistons, after 1 week the battery is dead, so it's been sitting again, so now he's going to have the compensator looked at

My point is these are going to run hot no matter what I think an 88 might run more efficiently those numbers produced in the 1275 kit were made after ported, polished heads and performance cams were added if you did the same thing on the 88ci it would crush the 1275cc kit, at that point you would be pushing the integrity of the case . Wondering if someone can help me out here. I am on a quest to smooth out the power-curve on my tune, but not sure how. I recently had a stage 1 done on my 2008 Sportster XL1200 R: Arlen Ness -stage 1, big sucker air cleaner kit and Bassani Road Rage 2 into 1 exhaust. A local shop whom I trust and have been business since the 90's did the install as well as the dynotune. Baseline was 56.1 HP @ 6,072 RPM and 61.2 ft.lb (torque)@ 2,684 RPM. After the stage 1 the numbers were: 63.1HP @ 6,010 RPM and 65.76 ft.lbs @ 3,294 RPM. So there was a definite and noticeable increase in power BUT it feels completely jerky, and twitchy to me when I get on the throttle and go through the gears. Especially at low to mid range. Mechanic said that HD's stock throttle spring is too soft and that may be what is causing the twichiness. BUT what I am really looking for and what I REALLY want is a good, strong, torquey, pull throughout the powercurve. Make the curve more linear and smooth out the jerkiness if that makes sense. Is it realistic? How can I get it? How would adding a cam and big bore kit effect the power-curve? Maybe it's a tuning issue. I dunno, I'm probably asking too many questions...lol.. but maybe somebody can distill it down and help me find the answer. Lost, confused, and hoping for answers here in Washington state. Thanks

You really should be running a good stage 1 already though before upgrading to more displacement…..right??
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
To get the most out of it as far as horsepower and torque you'd want to have the stage 1 setup done. You could run it with the stock exhaust and air cleaner, just tune for it but it would really cripple the kits power.

this is only a 2 cylinder engine not a v8! How much does it cost for two oversize pistons and get a machine shop to bore out my cylinders?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 4 жыл бұрын
My thought is motorcycle have half as many parts so they cost twice as much lol. You could probably get away with boring out to a 1250 and using larger pistons, but the piston kit is going to run about 300 bucks, then the cost of the machine shop. The problem with boring is that you reduce the size and strength of the cylinder spigot, this risks cracking it or worse it comes apart and falls down in the motor. The kits are cast to bore size, the spigots are actually reinforced with high tensile strength steel to perform with out coming apart. The cylinders in these kits are actually stronger than the factory cylinders. There's more to it than just boring it out, especially with the 1275 that fits on the stock sportster cases.

I was ready to pull the trigger on a 1275 kit for my 01 1200 sporty... but Hammer tells me the stock 1200 heads are the worst heads ever made blah blah, and I would not see much power gain unless I spend thousands more on new heads.... f that

I'm not sure what is so bad about them. I have an '03 1200 custom And I have revved that thing wide open till flames was shooting out the pipes and it still runs to this day (wishing it would blow up to give me an excuse to rebuild it) and that was two years ago. I mean those Evo motors are bulletproof.

I think it's funny that he only compares the 1175 hammer kit too the Hooligan kit of s&s which ofcourse has less HP cause its ment too comply with the EPA!! But what he doesn't tell you is that The S&S 1250 High compression kit is nearly 100 hp with a 1200 and ported heads!! Then he goes on too say that the 80 hp kit is better cause if you add ported heads cam intake and exaust you can get nearly 100 hp and that's cheaper then going with the s&s kit!! Hilarious!! This dude definitely works for Hammer when even in the video it clearly stated in the chart that the High Compression 1250 s&s kit had more HP and for a little under 1k!!
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 жыл бұрын
Lol I do not work for Hammer, but with the 1275 you have the advantage of keeping the compression down and not having to worry about pinging. High compression with head work and a 1200 will make power but you risk pinging.
