From the celebrated Oscar®-nominated director Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu, creator of Mirai, Wolf Children, Summer Wars, and more, comes a fantastical, yet beautiful and contemporary thematic story of one girl’s growth in the age of social media.
Suzu is a 17-year-old high school student living in a rural village with her father. For years, she has only been a shadow of herself. One day, she enters “U,” a virtual world of 5 billion members on the Internet. There, she is not Suzu anymore but Belle, a world-famous singer. She soon meets with a mysterious creature. Together, they embark on a journey of adventures, challenges and love, in their quest to become who they truly are.

I think as far as animated musicals go, it is so much better to watch them in a language you can understand instead of reading everything, which can make you not appreciate the music and visuals enough. I think the same could apply to live-action, but generally their songs are never lyrically translated, so it doesn't matter anyway lol.

@@KnotPhound I grew up watching subtitled content, and I read fast, so I’m okay with it. Just personally speaking, sometimes English dub actors sound dead inside, some are expressive but it’s done horribly, so I rather watch content in their original language. I’m glad Belle isn’t the case tho.

@@tillie3545 The thing with English dubs that are translations from foreign media is that a lot of times, instead of using well prepared actors, the ones in charge are just unexperienced freelancers because they're much cheaper. On the contrary, Ghibli movies have very well known Hollywood actors since they used to be distributed by Disney for so long. Gkids actually makes really high quality English dubs too. And of course you have a some of other shows such as Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Hellsing Ultimate, Black Lagoon, etc. where their English versions are even better than their Japanese counterparts.

True. And most of the time when they do try to localize a song, something is off enough to make sound no where near as pleasing as the original. Be it the lyrics, the meaning, the tempo, or even the singer's voice will throw people off. But they seem to have put in TONS of effort to avoid the common pitfalls for this movie.

Your Name did dub over the songs. The problem is the translated lyrics did not line up with the beats of the melody nor rhyme the same way as the original. They did a good job with it when compared to other translated or contrafactum songs. Problem is to a native English speaker the English translated songs sound bad when compared to the original. For that movie the English dub with the Japanese songs is great. The problem is translating music is incredibly hard. I hope Belle does do a good job with translating the songs. The song in this video sounds like they might have managed to avoid these pitfalls.

@@RyanCWilliams I think that's mostly because Radwimps lead singer, Yojiro Noda, did the translation himself because he knew English from living in the US at a young age. Milan Records, who released the English version of the soundtrack for Belle, said that the album was in collaboration with GKIDS and NYAV Post. They most likely had professional lyricists and translators on board to make these songs work.

Main example is when The Beast (Kei) says "I love you" to Belle in Japanese and he gets shut down by Belle whereas in English it's "You're my hero" to me that's really realllyyy not the same impact. Also Belle's first song she sings when she gets into U, Gales of Song or Uta yo, most of the lyrics are different like I don't think a single word matches up except for maybe "song" however, like u said nothing was lost in translation for this song both do have the same feelings and meanings across the languages it's just that, unlike u said, the song is absolutely not word for word and none of the songs are even close to word for word.

@ShishigamiXVII My problem is that they are shallow and lack of proper development. It didn't give me enough to care about why Belle wanted to help the Beast in U, other than just the typical "Oh he's hurt and lonely, I need to help him" excuse, and there was barely any to no chemistry between them. And the twist reveal in the third act was like those twist villain from the recent Disney CG animated movies where they were showed up early in the movie but literally forgotten until the end, so I couldn't connect or get to know any of them for that twist to work.

I’m so glad for this video, I just saw it in theaters but I missed this scene because I assumed they would play movie trailers before the movie starts but they didn’t! Ah well, at least I got to see it here but be warned for those of you who plan to watch it: BE EARLY!!!!

I just saw this today in the theater and I really enjoyed it. Oh there's a few moments where the pacing is a little off, but it's also meant for a different audience than Americans. Overall it was really good and I recommend it.

Just saw this movie in the English dub, and it was wonderful! They did an excellent job on translating meaning, tone and emotion, and it is so captivating to be able to hear such beautiful songs and be able to understand than!

I'm literally listening to all the languages I find of this (so far I've seen japanese, English, french) and they're all beautiful like wtf. They catch a feeling so well. At first I was sceptic, but this seems so amazing. I'm so excited to see the movie 👌🏾❤️

I thought Japanese voice would be more "authentic" and went to subtitle version for the theater but I regret missing watching the english version in big screen. Kyle really did amazing in English version! Whenever i go back to listening to the songs in the Belle I always coming back to Kylie's version.

I watched this movie in its english sub the other day and the music and vocals were amazing! I am so pleased that the english dub is just as stellar! Kylie McNeill’s vocals are otherworldly, I’ve never heard songs that truely feel like they’re LITERALLY touching my heart and soul… I am so excited to rewatch this film in its english dub, I don’t think I will ever get tired of this film! :)
