Glacier Bay Dual-Flush Toilet Slow Internal Leak and EASY $3 No-Tool Repair

The toilet would run every 5-10 minutes and make a hissing sound around the clock as the tank filled. I found a $3 fix and completed the repair in under 3 minutes with no additional parts or tools. You won't need to install a new tank or flush canister. I will walk you through this repair that does not require tools. Update: It is now 3 months after the repair in this video and still no leak!
Update: A second of my 3 Glacier Bay toilets began to exhibit the slow tank leak six months after the first flush canister seal failed. I used the same product and procedure to successfully address that leak as well.

**DO NOT USE CHLORINE TABLETS IN THESE TOILETS** I did. I overlooked the manufacturer's warning label on the inside of the lid and used tablets for 2 years to keep the bowl cleaning to a minimum. The problem is that the tablets erode the rubber seals inside the tank. The rubber seals are the only thing that separates you from a flooded home. The Clorox tablets were also likely the cause of the deteriorated seals that I replaced in this video on the black flush cannister.

Thanks a million on the tip for the Clorox tablets! I am sure that was my problem too since my wife had been using them for a while. In my case I had two bad seals/gaskets. The white silicone seal had tiny air bubbles and the black rubber was deformed.

Glacier Bay's fault for not placing the warning label at an easily visible spot, it should be on top outside of the cover. I used tablet as well and getting phantom leaks

I literally just bought a pair of fluidmaster seals from home depot after viewing this video cuz. My toilet has been doing a phantom flush every 20 mins. $5.98 for a pair of seals. Pack came with 2 different sizes. I didn’t shut off the water, flush it but held up the arm so water would not fill, unscrewed the plunger thing, replaced the seal, reinstalled the plunger and let it fill.. 2hrs later no phantom flush. I also threw away the bleach tablet I had in there… I’ll just stick to the good old fashion cleaning…

Great to the point video! Thanks! We have pex plumbing and no shut off at the toilet in question so I hurriedly pulled out the piece and saw extreme mineral build up from our unfiltered well water. Quickly tooth brush cleaned the seal and reinstalled. Will replace the seal when we get a plumber to put in shut off valves. Thanks again!

The blue is the bigger flush, it should be on the left looking from the top of tank. And also, the slide buttons on the side of the tower, you should push them all the way down to the max flush setting and bam, you'll see even better flush, yw 😃

I've been fighting with the hall toilet flush valve for weeks trying to determine which way to make it stronger! Gotta hold button down and even then it's not "strong" - water level is correct, water valve opened all the way, great water pressure, etc. I'll adjust mine today and see if that's what we needed! Thank you for the video!! This was the exact issue I had with my GB Dual-Flush toilet. The hard part was figuring out how to remove the flush valve to check the seal (which was warped). Your video is using the Fludmaster flush valve, which is not what came with the unit. For the GB flush valve (aqua blue and white buttons), grab the top of the flush valve and twist clockwise wise, and it comes right off! If you are grabbing the part that moves, you are grabbing it too low!

Before replacing the seal, try tightening the canister (2 wing nuts under tank). I should have tried that first myself :(

The "misshapen" sections of the seal you refer to are like water blisters on the skin. Water has permeated into the seal. First step would be to remove the seal and pop the blisters, then re-install the seal again. If that does not work, then you could purchase the replacement seal. I had the same issue, popping these bubbles allowed the seal to work again. I wouldnt have figured this out if it wasnt for your video first, so thank you!

I just had one of these toilets installed, was ready to drop the pill and I saw the warning label inside the tank lid, no chlorine, no bleach tablets. Wondering what sort of tablets I could drop in, several sites indicated NONE as flappers and other parts inside the toilet of whatever manufacture or age will corrode those parts causing failure or at least premature replacement of seals and flappers. I'm wondering about hanging inside the bowel sanitizers as at least they are not in contact with sensitive parts.

The black cylindrical cannoster should turn 1/4 turn to the left with a hand twist. Then after seal replacement turn right 1/4turn to lock into place. No tools needed. Good luck!

is it possible the existing ring could pass the "eye test" but still be at fault? my ring does not look warped like yours did in the video. trying to determine if I should replace the entire flushing valve system or try replacing the ring first...

I think that is entirely possible that the ring could leak but not be warped visually. The gaskets are up to about $6 now at Home Depot and I think that it would be a good first step before replacing the flush canister. Good luck.

These are well built. Only a problem with theae seals in my experience is if you use bleach tablets in the water tank.

That is precisely the toilet that I own. I purchased it in 2018 from Home Depot. The Glacier Bay dual flush seals purchased at Home Depot work to this day (3 years later) without leaking. However, price has increased since video was originally published. Approx. $6 now for the 2-seal kit. Good luck!

What can you do about that green stain that keeps growing on the chrome button? I have noticed that on both of our toilets of the same model as yours. We bought replacement parts from Amazon, but I want to see if there is a more permanent solution before I bother replacing them.

Hi Timothy. I had the green crystalized stains too. After time, they began to eat through the faux-chrome finish on the plastic flush button. I am confident that it was caused by the chlorine tables effervescing through the top of the tank and over the button. I would scrape them clean, but after about a year, I just ended up replacing them with $10 parts on Amazon. Once I got rid of the chlorine tablets, the green crystaline gunk never came back.

That's about right. Only got about 18 months out of my seal before the "phantom flush" sounds started. I used the chlorine tables for almost the entire 18 month duration. Thank you for your feedback and update on price.

My tank fills in about 90 seconds after the flush. Your valve on the left may be corroded with minerals preventing quick fill.

Most of the time it is the seals, but in these dual flush toilets, the black part is called the "flush cannister" made by Fluidmaster and can be purchased online.

Make sure you properly align the flush valve to the push botton. The full (full circle) and half flush (half circle) must coincide. Most of these valves are color coded for that purpose. Also, these dual-flush toilet valves come in different sizes. The 2-inch and 3-inch are the most common ones. The silicone seals come in different sizes too (inside and outside diameters).

That seal is the culprit as you say, but it looks like you have a chlorine tablet in the tank... That is the cause of the premature failure after only 6 months... 👍

It is possible that the black flush cannister does not have a tight seal to the porcelain. I believe that mine was a quarter turn to the left to remove and a quarter turn to the right to install (tighten).

The cylindrical flush cannister rotates left one quarter turn to loosen. The gasket just peels off the flush cannister with a gentle pull. No tools required.
