Thanks! We had both problems mentioned in this video. Corrosion of the ring around the two buttons and the leak. We bought three of these GB toilets to replace old toilets, and the one that had issues was the only one we had added a chlorine tab. Glad to find this video because it was exact to our Glacier Bay model. Some videos show using both rings in the FluidMaster package.

My daughter bought one of these recently, and brand new, out of the box, would leak and refill the tank constantly. Figured out that the threaded rods at the bottom of each of the buttons weren't adjusted properly from the factory and were pressing down on the valves. I loosened the jam nuts (round plastic knurled deals) and adjusted the threaded rods until there was a bit of clearance. Previously each time you set the lid onto the tank you could see the buttons move a bit as they made contact with the valve. Just FYI

My seal was fine but toilet was leaking. Before changing it I made sure the top where the flush buttons are was totally turned until I couldn't get any further. As the push buttons ended up almost vertical, I removed it, unscrew the bottom rod and turned the bottom part with the overflow tube toward the wall until I could screw the push button part locked completely while having the buttons horizontally set (left / right orientation). When done, I screwed back the rod snugly and put back everything together. My toilet stopped leaking. Other things you can do. Bleach will deteriorate the black rubber gasket (you'll see black stain on your hands if you touch it). The white seal is silicon based and is not that damaged by bleach, or at least not as fast. You can remove it, clean it up and put some lube or silicone grease on it to help to seal better. You can also use some lube on the white silicon seal, it won't hurt. Changing it may help but what helped me was to turn the unit to lock the top to the bottom while aligning the buttons properly. Not doing so may leave a gap where water may sip though. If nothing work, you can still get a new kit and install it

When those seals get bubbles on them all you have to do is pop them with a sewing needle. I did this and can confirm it will fix your ghost flushing problems.

@cdcVintage -- I had the same problem with my Glacier Bay toilet and remembered your advice. Worked 100%! The bubbles were hard to see BUT if you looked on the edge of the O-ring/seal, you could see it was rippling in about 3-6 places on my ring. I pierced those "undulations" with a pincushion needle, set the O-ring back in place, and the toilet has been normal for 12 hours! Before, it would run for 30-45 seconds at least 8 times a day! Annoying and noisy but that problem is gone now! I figure I have 2 years before I have to replace that circular seal/O-ring. I think it's recommended to replace the white seal ring about every 5 years. That's about the time for normal valve flaps on the American Standard toilets...

Is there a safe, reasonable alternative to chlorine tablets? The pushbuttons on my Glacier Bay have also gone green! I'm going to replace them but only AFTER I get a reasonable alternative to chlorine tablets. My toilet also makes noises every few hours and seems to go through a fill cycle. I take it this is because of the valve seal (ring) degradation? It's kind of annoying because I've barely had this toilet for over year! Lately, I've been thinking I should have just bought another American Standard toilet! I'm having to learn a NEW SET of maintenance and cleaning instructions for the Glacier Bay. It's kind of annoying and I NEVER heard about the corrosion issue with the buttons until today -- although I did notice them turning as green as the Statue of Liberty! It's crap like this that makes you HATE brand for being different!!!

I replaced the seal and added food dye to the tank to confirm leak had stopped but am seeing the dye leak into the bowl. Any other areas to check?

Good question. It looks like you can't. The whole assembly appears to be fixed to the bowl but there's ALWAYS a way.

I made the same mistake, used chlorine tablets and yes it turned green. BUT.... mine runs every hour? You'll here it top off for about 15 seconds. Could that also be the gasket?

You will continue to have that problem with the seal. These toilets are notorious for that seal going bad sometimes twice a year. Problem is glacier Bay is a low budget toilet and all they have to do it design a chlorine resistance seal like korky did with there seals. But chlorine is not the only issue, its a cheaply made seal. If you ask me how i know , I own a plumbing business in 3 states and have installed over 300 of these toilets every single one have the same issue. I stopped buying them and stopped installing them all they did was cost me thousands of dollars in return service calls. I eventually had to rip 47 out and install a gerber toilet for free of charge to make the customer happy, which i was installing for 20 years but decided to go with this toilet to try it out because its one piece, What a huge mistake that was. The Gerber toilet is $370 but it never fails i have installed thousands of them in the past 30 years and only had to replace a flapper or fill valve after 10 years of the install. Stay away from this glacier bay if you know whats good for you. Also stay away from american standard champion max 4 they are just as bad, they also have a major issues with there flush valve seal going bad after a month . Both are junk toilets. Gerber toilets are the oldest manufacturer of toilets they know what it takes to make a good toilet.i have tried hundreds of different types and brands and have always went right back to gerber. The gerber avalanche or gerber viper are both maintaince free for at least 10 years of heavy use. And then you might have to replace a $5 flapper or $10 fill valve. This glacier Bay customer service is horrendous to work with. They have no email, its nearly impossible to get a whole entire flush valve. Customer service doesn't even know there own product. If you call the number for glacier Bay your forwarded to home Depot then your talking to a 17 year old that can't even tie his or her own shoes so your pretty much transferrer to 7 different people only to get hung up on because they are so illiterate. As a contractor i dont have the time to mess with a bunch of incompetent people. Now if your retired and dont have anything to do with your life then go ahead and buy this glacier bay but be prepared for high water bill because it will ghost flush all the time and if it's in a back bathroom you won't even know it until you get your water bill and see it went up $200 in one month. And incompetent customer service department. Dont say i didn't warn you.
