My thoughts have always been that Gladiator was in a relationship with Lucilla then he decided to break it off. You can sense this sexual tension with how they interact on screen years later. I can speculate that his true loyalty is to the Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. The relationship with the Emperor’s daughter complicated his feelings of loyalty to the Emperor. He broke off his relationship with Lucilla then met his future wife and had a son. Lucilla never disclosed being pregnant to preserve Maximus’ marriage. This always made sense to me and we’re talking about a difference of months between the two boys. Gladiator could never reach his fullest potential by marrying the Emperor’s daughter. He had to earn his royalty by avenging the lives of three innocent people (wife, son, and Marcus Aurelius-emperor) while protecting two more (Lucilla and Lucius). Either way it’s just a movie.

Maybe even as a brother and sister that wish they were family because they had no one else/resented their family. Good observation, appreciate the reply. You're right, it is a movie; however; it was a masterpiece and the ending was perfect, imo. I believe that Maximus had too much honor and love for him to have a kid out of wedlock, and Lucius reminded him of his own son.
