If his sister had killed him, no matter how much people wanted him dead, they would still have to punish her because he was the emperor. She and her son would be killed. She told him everything to protect her son. She's a mother first and foremost.

"Are you not entertained?" Fun Fact: This movie was shot in chronological order over eighteen weeks. What Script Fact: Joaquin Phoenix ad-libbed his "Am I not merciful?" scream. Connie Nielsen wasn't expecting it and her frightened reaction was genuine. The Man Behind The Curtain Fact: After Maximus (Russell Crowe) shouts the "entertain" line in Zucchabar, you can see a crew member in jeans and a white t-shirt in the stands on the extreme left. Home Sweet Home Fact: Maximus' description of his home (specifically, how the kitchen is arranged and smells in the morning and at night) was ad-libbed. It's a description of Russell Crowe's own home in Australia. Heartbreaking Fact: Oliver Reed died three weeks before principal photography ended. Because Proximo was considered a key character, a clause in the movie's insurance contract would have allowed the filmmakers to re-shoot all of Reed's scenes with another actor at the insurer's expense, about $25 million. However, most of the actors and crew were exhausted from the punishing schedule, and Ridley Scott did not want to cut Reed from the movie. The script was rewritten, and a body double and CGI were used to give Reed's character a plausible resolution.

At the end fight you guys were a bit wrong, he didn’t drop his sword because he wanted to dishonor commodus, he dropped his sword because he couldn’t hold it any longer because he was bleeding out and dying from the fatal stab right in the lungs and everything that is important… he was already seeing the afterlife mid-fight he only held on longer enough out of pure willpower, 98% of people would have been dead already or dropped to the ground already at that moment… but awesome reaction and even more awesome movie, I can tell you to stand in Rome at the honor place of Markus Aurelius (the Ceasar that died in the beginning of the movie / or better sayed was murdered by his son commodus) is just a feeling out of this world….

You were close ... the name Commodus means "Suitable, convenient, opportune", so that COULD be considered equivalent to comfortable. He *_was_* a real emperor and the son of Marcus Aurelius. He *_did_* fight, on occasion in the Colosseum as a gladiator and *_was_* actually assassinated by a Roman athlete/wrestler named, Narcissus, but he was drowned in the bath, NOT in the Colosseum. It's not clear who invented the crossbow, but it appeared in China and Europe around the 7th to 5th centuries B.C. ... but the Greco-Roman world definitely had them by the 2nd century (time depicted in this film), so the Romans not only knew about them, but the scenes shown in the Colosseum were possible and even probable.

min 27:04 - Maximus bids farewell to Commodus calling him "his highness" and not emperor. An important detail, a huge offense and lack of respect towards a "Caesar". He practically does not recognize him as his emperor and he said so in front of the people of ROME.

Not all gladiators as you see were slaves, some were professionals, rich and with an actual fandom. Actually the Colosseum itself is agible to be used as an arena to this day, they need only to repave it. Another history fact is, Commodus was actually killed by a gladiator under the senate's payroll.

@@PillowHero-jd6ie Lucius didn't know the plot from his mother. He only knew that she thought favorably of Maximus as a potential Savior of Rome. Commodus when he hears only THAT realizes something is up with his sister. Then that scene when he is sitting next to Lucius he is threatening to torture and kill her son unless she tells him all. She could certainly still lie...but that would only protect her son for a little while afterwhich Lucius would likely be killed and perhaps her too.

The word queer has existed since the 16th century aka the years 1501-1600 it was primarily used to mean strange, odd, peculiar or eccentric. And by the 19th century it started being used only on men attracted to the same gender. Nowadays its used for everyone that's apart of the lgbtq community. I don't really know what they called us (queer people) before the 16 century tho..probably some horrible names, nothing we arent used to 🤣

Ooh this one’s been a favourite of mine ever since it came out ❤️! Commodus is such a fantastic villain, Proximo was the *perfect* final role for Oliver Reed, the camaraderie of the gladiators is great, the music is wonderful, and it has all the satisfaction of a good vengeance film with none of the gross feeling of a bad vengeance film. Looking forward to watching this reaction!

True love didn't hold much importance back in Roman times, especially if you were a member of the Royal Family. Royal daughters were married to other noble men to strengthen political alliances. Military commanders were sent far away on campaigns. Lucilla and Maximus had a brief love affair, but the Powers that Be ended it. Maximus found love again in Hispania, but Lucilla was left without love.

FYI: 'queer' is an old word that at one time meant strange, odd, weird or abnormal; or to inadvertently ruin something or to make it go off of it's intended direction ('The archer queered the shot and missed his target.'). The word 'queer' has taken on a new meaning in modern times to mean having homosexual traits or tendencies. It's odd that the word was used in this movie in the context that it was.

Almost everyone thinks that the thumbs up means that the defeated gladiator gets to live on. However, it is the absolute opposite. With the raised thumb, which was passed by the throat as if cutting someone's throat demanded "DEATH". The clenched fist, with the thumb laid on, was the sign for "GRACE". The final decision, however, lay with the Emperor, who mostly agreed with the opinion of the audience.

Regarding the Commodus fight scene at the beginning, it's a training session, is realistic actually: every Roman patrician had to train to fighting from childhood (regardless the skills), they used to have maestro of arms for that. There is almost nothing of historical in the movie (eg Commodus becomes emperor by inheriting, he doesn't kill him) but probably the director has included it to make sense to the final scene, where instead of killing him, he fights Maximus (after wounding him of course, he was crazy, not idiot); I think Scott put that scene because sources tell us that Commodus loved the gladiatorial games so much that he took part in them. Sure, it's a "nice" advantage to know that, people who fight against you, know who you are, so what have to do: lose. PS Sorry for comments deleted, my English is terrible and I tried to use Google to make it understandable.
@ronweber1402

Ya as much as I love this movie this, like Braveheart uses historical figures but that is almost the only connection to actual history it has. Gladiators fought in specific forms and pairings. They didn't fight chained together, they didn't fight animals that was done by bestiari, they didn't reenact battles that was done with captured prisoners and convicted criminals. Contrary to popular belief one of the fighters didn't die in every fight. If a gladiator was killed in the ring the host had to pay for his death. A trained gladiator represented a huge investment like a prize race horse. They were well fed, highly trained and given high quality medical care. When gladiators were killed it was usually because someone effed up and delivered a lethal wound and it is more of a mercy killing to spare them hour or days of excruciating agony and even though gladiators got the best medical treatment many would still die from infections.

The Romans were masters of warfare and treated combat like an assembly line. They knew a man could fight really well hand to hand for about 3 minutes and then would need to recirculated to the back of the lines. They fought in a wall and line not chaotic like the movie opening showed. When moving forward enbloc they would throw pilum at the charge to weight down the enemies shields and then the short sword and shield was like a buzz saw. The portrayal isn’t the way it was usually done and they didn’t rely on cavalary very much it was the infantry that did the war winning. The machines of war is accurate to some degree. They greased pigs in tar and set them on fire at the enemy sometimes and used war dogs to kill enemies on horse. Roman lead bullets is evidence of mass production of items and they often hang slang written in them. They were fired from sing shot and were beveled or hollowed out to whistle and were terrifying to go against. The slingers were deadly accurate. They deafeted the most varied enemies and for that reason they were the best military of the ancient world. Ghengis largely fought farm towns and the Chinese and Alexander the Great and the Greek style phalanx etc fell to the Roman gladius.

I was enjoying the reaction until I heard him say "OMFG", why you people say it like that, so casual about it? do you even know what you're saying? And of course you know the meaning of that and still don't care how offensive you are? Didn't even finish watching the reaction after typing this, by the way, the only dislike here is from me, proud about it too. Think about what you're saying before you say it and don't try to make it like it's just a phrase, not cool.
