Reusing costumes of previous episodes was often done in the '60s.

Back in the 60s, the Dollar to Quatloo rate was much more favorable.

C'mon Dog Lady.... this was one of the greatest episodes EVER! The music alone still rings in my head when I'm in a sticky situation, and betting quatloons on new comers at work is a staple!

Isn´t the music the same as Amok Time?

Margaret Armen's original script featured a "slithering vine", named a "Delka Vine" grabbing Shahna and tossing her into a pond, and Kirk having to rescue her by wrestling the tentacle vine. Robert Justman found this idea much beyond the scope of the series budget, and the scene was scrapped.

Gimme gimme more quatlooos!! When I was a kid -- which was a decade before Lady Gaga was born -- we took Shahna to be a troll doll come to life. A triskelion is a neolithic geometric figure composed of three interlooping spiral circles. The floor pattern of the arena is modeled after one. The episode was written by a woman, Margaret Armen, who wrote for television from the mid sixties into the eighties. She wrote two other episodes of Star Trek, including "The Cloud Minders" in season three. PS. Shahna looks like she belongs in the live action version of Dragonball Z.

True about the triskelion, but there are many forms of that symbol. The Greeks used three bent legs joined at the center as well. However, did you ever notice that this triskelion is shifted a few degrees out of alignment with the perimeter frame it is in? Look at the central truncated triangle. Its sides *should* be parallel to the sides of the frame. But that's just my take on it. Don't know why the artist who conceived it arranged it that way. It's a great graphic, but could have been better executed.

College football rules apply on Triskelion, only one foot needs to be in for the touch down to count.

Angelique Pettyjohn made me go ga-ga as a pubescent. Yeah, the plot was contrived as hell, but it was a young male's fantasy for sure, so millions of us didn't care. (It was better than "Arena's" adaptation from the original story.) I think, however, as this story progressed, it evolved reasonably and heightened the suspense and conflict. Kirk's solution to it all, with his wagering his crew and his final suggestion to the Providers--after he won, of course--was a great way to resolve it.

So, I guess you're back from your travels. I've enjoyed tagging along. Thank you for this. Yeah... it wasn't a great episode. But, growing up, it was still fun. I was still little when TOS came out in prime time. I mostly watched in reruns on local TV after school in the early 70s. I gladly watched whichever episode came next. And, every so often, it was this one. I didn't bother me. At any rate... thank you for the review, if not actually a reaction. I'll look forward to A Piece of the Action, because that actually is one of the episodes I like more. I hope you are well, and I'll look forward to whatever comes next. Thank you!

3:34 "From that moment on"? So he was not an obnoxious and deliberately a pain in the backside to whom ever from the episode where he first appeared in the series? 😒

Where Kirk ducks under the knife... you can see the hesitation as the Blue Skin waits for him to get fully under and then not stab the star of the show. In real life that would have been, splotch, stab, augh you got me. Then the 5 minute death speech.

Not to be a nerd, but... "Um, actually..." ;) The Prime Directive doesn't apply here. The Prime Directive is only for societies with technology below the invention of warp drive, and the Triskelion Providers clearly have technology more advanced than the Federation.

I rather liked this episode. An episode of The Simpsons spoofed this episode. Unfortunately, the spoof scene is often edited out of the Simpsons reruns of the episode.
