It's sad that there are people out there now saying that Kerri is better than Simone because she was willing to compete injured and that Simone is selfish for refusing to risk being paralyzed, if she gets disoriented in midair. Her book was amazing. I read it as soon as it was released and several times after that. I had a feeling that many years ago, that with her honesty.. sh!t was about to hit the fan. And it did. I commend her for her bravery because she actually was blacklisted by the community for speaking up.. and in my opinion.. she truly is one of the first representatives for those athletes to make a change. She was in a very tough spot where those girls confided in her but to respect their trust, she couldn’t say anything, but rather be a backbone and a supporter and encourage all those women with secrets to come out and be brave. I’d love to see her on a board for the sport.. and Aly as president! Lol

The way Marta has her hand on the back of Moceanu's neck and at the same time acting like she's tussling her hair to comfort her is so eerie. Marta Karolyi typically used her fingers in a claw-like grip on the backs of the gymnasts' necks and she'd do this to both exert her control and dominance, physically and psychologically, over the gymnasts and especially to let them know when she was angry by digging her nails into their skin. Seeing her doing this 'claw-like' grip lets you know she's exerting her control and maybe letting the gymnasts know she's angry with them. It's awful to see.

@alexkaitlinthomas
@alexkaitlinthomas 4 жыл бұрын
The second individual spot is won by an all around gymnast/s, not a specialist - although it's won for the team and they choose who they want to have the spot. I'd switch Morgan in for Laurie and Mcykala Skinner for Eaker. Kara's beam does not hold up internationally so unless she changes it dramatically and gets rid of the ring jumps she won't win any medals anyway.

In my opinion, realistically, it will be: simone biles (because obviously), morgan hurd (Team USA needs her bars), sunisa lee (Team USA needs her bars), and grace mccallum/one of the brand new elite like Kayla DiCello, and Jade Carey as the 1 individiual spot. I like eaker and skinner, but skinner's form is consistently lacking (great difficulty, but loses points with lack of pointed toes, not reaching 180 degrees, etc), and eaker is fab! But my picks above like biles and jade are PERFECTION on vault and floor, but Team USA really needs great all-rounders with great bars routines, and eaker, memmel, skinner, etc do not have that, unfortunately. The 4 person team is forcing the US team members to be strong on ALL events.

@@ethanvaneck2971 That's not the point. A lot of athletes will make unsafe decisions for themselves in the name of _glory,_ hence why it is a coach's job to step in when necessary. What happened in at the '96 Games was done for T.V.; especially the infamous image of Bela Karolyi carrying her. You should listen to the podcast Heavy Medals, it addresses that spiel in quite decent detail.
@GullibleTarget
@GullibleTarget 4 жыл бұрын
Athletes will force themselves, to the point where they compete against the coaches wishes. The thing is the control that is excerted on young gymnasts. It's not really a coach/athlete relationship where the coach is in service of the athlete. It's the other way around. The gymnast seems to be in service of the coach. Which is warped and weird. I mean, who signs the paychecks? Not the coach.

I really loved this whole series. I'm so happy to see things changing in this sport for the better. These women deserve to be heard and for their experience in elite gymnastics to be a positive one. Not something that scars them for life. Seeing some of the teamwork and positivity that you see in university level gymnastics starting to come into elite is so refreshing. I will say I am very excited to see what Team USA will look like post The Simone Biles Era. I expect there will be a slight drop off but the talent pool is still strong. Great episode once again. Although it annoys me to hear Americans talk about the 2 per country rule being unfair when America was one of the countries pushing for it back in the day. Was it 2000 when 3 Romanians stood on the podium? America needs to understand that one of the reasons they are top now is because of the 2 per country rule. It allowed their gymnasts to qualify for finals and get the sport noticed by the public. And of course with US money there's now a fully equipped gym in every town, if not more than 1 and all the worlds best coaches have flocked there for the money. Americans need to be a little more understanding of their privileges and advantages.

@MD-722
@MD-722 3 жыл бұрын
@@MuzzyBarker Elite gymnastics is not _"always so abusive,"_ that is a very naive and sweeping statement; especially as the NCAA is the biggest silent culprit in all of this. Part of the reason abuse is so rampant in the U.S. is because if a gymnast doesn't peak by the time they are 18 and has to turn professional in order to afford their training etc (e.g. Jordyn Weiber), they have to forfeit their collegiate eligibility and subsequently their athletic scholarships. Thus as a result, American gymnasts are pushed so hard at young ages because their window of opportunity has been kept so small. Also the NCAA are FULLY aware of this and could have made exemptions for gymnasts YEARS ago, but to this day they have not.
@tosh4771

@@MD-722 The ncaa recently changed some of their rules due to the Pac-10 basically forcing them to, but it amazes me that they never took into account the differences in being able to compete in gymnastics at a young age. The fact of the matter is that Kerri had the weight of an entire nation on her shoulders. And a CHILD should never have to carry that burden. She suffered a minor injury and then had no choice but to vault again and seriously injury herself. And for what? The cost of her health and well-being. Not the gold medal. A calculator would have shown you they would have won regardless. Our NUMBER ONE job as coaches is to kept these kids safe. They failed her. She’s not a hero for vaulting on an injury. She’s a victim of a broken system... that’s still broken. It’s our job, as the new generation of coaches, to build a better environment than what our predecessor experienced.

To be honestly 2008 the Chinese team did have the SV to do well and if both teams had hit everything then China still had a chance to beat them. Their team was constructed better too - they did not have a single gymnast do all four events (even Yang Yilin and Jiang Yuyuan their best AA gymnasts didn't do 4 events - JYY only did 2!). It was spread out as a 'team' balanced more than the USA team. China also had the top individual qualifying scores on beam, floor and vault so USA were never guaranteed the gold for that competition. For comparison look to 2012 - there you can say that the gold medal was really USA's to lose, their SV was ridiculously ahead of everyone else - and for another team to have a chance USA had to make a mistake, quite different.

This video's take on the Beijing team final makes me cringe. The Chinese team was simply better than the USA in every single way, they had the best UB team by miles, came to the games with 2 Amanar and 2 outstanding DTY, they literally had the potential to win every gold medals in Beijing (TF + Jiang Yuyuang AA, Cheng Fei vault and floor, Li Shanshan BB, He Kexin and Yang Yilin UB). They had the highest overall start value, the more original routines and smarter constructed routines, the best form and execution, and had less injured gymnasts than the US. They also had the crowd support, WON PRELIMINARY, and after Chellsie and Sam injuries it was obvious than the gold was China's to lose.

@maseratic boychik Get your own facts straight. Cheng Fei qualified in 1st on floor and she beat both Nastia and Shawn AGAIN on team finals night. She beat them 2 out of the 3 times they competed in Beijing, so she absolutely could have won floor. Jiang yuyuan was injured, but I agree that even if healthy, it would have been hard for her to beat Nastia and Shawn in the AA.
