Absolutely phenomenal work. What a pleasure to have stumbled across your channel and this particular video. Truly a hidden gem and very inspiring. Yesterday I collected an Eastern Red Cedar stump and took the time to power wash the root ball. I’ve been pondering ideas left and right, knowing it’s going to be a small table. I really admire the way you had the glass cut to incorporate the piece even more than just holding the glass up and in place. Coming through and ultimately belonging with the glass. One shot you had on there looked like as if the glass was an ocean reflecting the sky, with islands of wood in the midst. Fresh sub! I hope life has been great the past few years!

Absolutely outstanding! Very original the idea of the wood branches coming out throught the glass holes... it reminds me the Frank lloyd wright filosophy of organic architecture in some ways. But what i love the most is the concept marriage of the two different materials... natural and artificial, warm and cold mixed together. As a designer passionate also about art and psychology i definitely would like to afferm that contrast is the clue for giving strong emotions. I believe that as in life, different people and different cultures can match together... and can give strong emotions too...like in art. The wood sphere is the cherry on the cake! Greetings from italy and thanks for giving emotions.

Thank you so much Christian, what an amazing comment! I have always loved using contrasting materials and shapes, often putting aluminium, glass and other hard flat surfaces with organic forms, I think it works, especially when bringing these pieces into peoples homes... with all those square walls! Emotion and Sentiment were two very key factors in this project, as my client was also an old friend and colleague, I think this made it easier for me! thanks for watching and leaving such a wonderful comment again! I shall be looking into Frank Lloyd Wright some more also.. thank you!

I've just created a root table similar to yours. If I had thought of letting a few of the roots stay longer than the others to anchor the glass, as you have ingeniously done, I would have. But it's too late for that now! I have the whole thing leveled off. But to get to my question: I'm losing my mind trying to find a way to anchor the glass to the table. I can't just use rubber tabs because the roots aren't evenly spread out, so if someone put something particularly heavy on one part of the glass, it would probably flip. Therefore I need some way to anchor it down. Any suggestions? It's my first table and I'm at a loss. I don't want to use glue because that seems like a one shot deal, and could get messy. Beautiful table by the way!
@zennormade4 жыл бұрын
ahh thank you so much! yes this was one of my thoughts also, however due to the roots coming through, this is not a problem as the whole glass slides on at and angle and locks in, its just resting on some silicone pads on the rebated wood where the glass is in contact, they are tiny and almost invisible once the glass is settled with pressure, my glass supplier did say that there is a glue option, this is tricky and a bit of a one time shot, but would be almost invisible when done correctly, altenatively there are many mechanical fixing options that I looked into, mirror fixings are a good place to start! good luck and I would love to see what you do! thanks for watching!

Great table! How can you be sure the table top is horizontal? I have a stump and wonder how can I cut it's root to make it perfectly flat... Thank you!
@zennormade4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I cut as straight as possible with a chainsaw then fine tune it with a straight edge and sanding and then when I got the glass over the root I spent a very long time making all the cuts for it to rest on level (using the plywood blank top and a spirit level) this was the hardest part as it rests mid way down on about 10-12 of the bits of root, lots of lifting the top on and off and shaving a mm here and a mm there! Good luck!!! 💪💪

@@zennormade Thanks a lot for the reply! Yes, I expect it was very precise. time consuming process... I am going to make a table by using stump with root as a base... at least I'll give a try :-)

really nice..jus wondering roughly what it costs for custom cut piece of glass
@zennormade4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike! its not the cheapest option! and there's a lot of variation..... a quick call to your local glass supplier would probably give you a rough idea of what they charge for CNC Cutting service..... you'd need to factor in providing them with either a template as I did.. or a CAD file they can use. Then obviously the spec of the glass used makes a big difference... I don't wish to discuss exact ammounts for this customers piece here but they did request a thicker than necessary glass for the aesthetic.. this 4mm increase in the glass thickness on this table added over 30% to the cost of the glass! feel free to drop me a private message if you wanted to discuss further! jamie

beautiful work, mate. i have happened on a perfect stump with roots like yourself literally across the road from my home. i wheelbarrowed it back by myself just about but am looking at it seriously now n feeling a bit overwhelmed tbh. ive only really just started woodworking and the extent of my tool collection is a cheap drill/driver thats good for only light work and a decent, corded generic 1650w circular saw and a few wood drill tips and chisels. i wish to make a table hopefully in the end somewhat akin to yours, and to that end have £300ish available to buy i thought, two decent tools from makita, dewalt etc. but what do i get? do i need the angle grinder for clean up or will a decent rotary sander do? i need to make big, straight and level cuts, do i get a corded chainsaw or decent drill w/ router attachment within some sort of jig to keep it level? sorry, i did say i was a bit lost lol excellent work though and cheers for the inspiration! 👍
@zennormade4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching, subscribing and leaving a comment! The magic 3! its a tough one, but I would spend the money on whichever tool you see yourself needing the most! easy to say when there's 3 or 4! But you have to start somewhere and work your way up from there, make do with what you can on the journey and you'll be surprised how inventive you will become when backed into a corner! you've kind of answered all your own questions with the options you have, it sounds like you need to decide and 'im not taking that responsibility away from you! 😂 I will say though, I spend most of the time on the shaping with the angle grinder and burr wheel, you can be aggressive and remove a lot or gentle and fine shape things and a cheap rotary sander will bring it up nicely given enough sandpaper and patience behind the operator! 😂 Good luck and let me know how you get on! 🙏👌💪

Beautiful work. i'm working on a stump table out of an amazing fused magnolia trunk and am torn between a shaped glass top and a carved wooden top, so it was nice to see that the shaped glass is indeed an option. Was the glass very expensive as i am making it without a customer?
@zennormade4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! that does sound awesome. I won't lie, the glass was not cheap! it was Cnc cut from 12mm tempered table glass.... I guess see if there is a glass cutting company local to you and get some ideas from them for prices your way. carved wood would definitely be cheaper in materials... but maybe a little more of your own time? id love to know how you get on!

@zennormade2 жыл бұрын
@@Monsieur.Nobody. yes hemp oil is what I use to finish 99% of my work… I use BeeHemp Wood Oil.. it works wonders! I’m not sure the exact model as I haven’t got the saw to hand at the moment but it’s made by Einhell and was bought online. There was a lot of similar saws available from memory when I ordered this… was the best price at the time! I will say I wouldn’t use the saw for anything other than smaller carving work…. The bigger petrol ones do all the hard work! I’d love to see the results of your table build! I’m starting another project that links this table design and the monkeypuzzle sphere leg table did soon… and this will definitely have some more carving! Keep on whittling!

@@zennormade I'll find out where I can get the BeeHemp wood oil here in Sydney Australia... And Yes, I'll be putting my entire work on KZbin so... I'll pass on the link to you when I'm done. Just currently waiting on round glass tops for the carving... Btw, I agree that having a glass top is better for carving projects because otherwise they are so low in height thay no one will be able to see what's underneath hahah... I'll find one... I'm planning to go full hand tools but I think in this day and age it will not be economical as the projects would take a long time to complete. Btw another thing I forgot to mention... I really liked the music on your videos as well.

Bit late to the party on this one - how do you make sure all the bugs either leave the root or is it a case of sealing them in with the oil/wax?

I removed a lot of wood from the piece taking it back to fresh wood almost everywhere and there were no signs of life before I started soaking the piece heavily in oil. At which point most bugs if there were any would have left!

Hi! Thanks for watching! I use an old 12v battery angle grinder that I took apart, changed the switch to variable and put a sanding head in. Although I believe sealey do them or if you have a compressor they are called mini DA sanders. That and an ordinary random orbital sander and a lot of hand sanding!
