This story line didn't really make any sense. In the earlier seasons Coach Beiste always felt like a girl on the inside but in the last season she suddenly wants to transition into a man?? I liked her character because she showed that you don't have to follow the stereotypes placed on your gender, but then the producers decided to do a complete 180 and make her seem like she wanted to be male the whole time. I feel like the producers only created this storyline because they wanted to appeal to more audience since transgender was a big issue at the time, and they couldn't be bothered putting some thought into the storylines because they just wanted to get glee over and done with. I love glee but season 6 had really random and terrible storylines.

Bieste was such an awesome character and didn't need to have a trans storyline, cos it was just clearly jumping on the bandwagon of ticking "diversity" boxes, instead of actually making sense to the show. I think what pissed me off more though was how Unique was almost brushed aside in the wake of this: there were articles calling Bieste the "first trans person on Glee" and "omg such a brave storyline" when Unique had been talking about being trans since series 3, even saying "I want to match what's on the inside" to Kurt and Mercedes. Like, they had such an amazing character there, but they just ignored her and instead of fleshing out Unique and looking more into it, they chose to make someone completely new and go "hey look! we're talking about being trans and you get to see the before and after to see how great our make up team is!!!"

That's the stupidest plotline in the entire show. This is extremely inconsistent with her character. She always said she wanted to be treated as a woman and that inside she was just a girl like any other. I also find this offensive to masculine women! Just because someone is a masculine athletic woman doesn't mean she is trans or gay! They have a great trans character - Unique. She actually MAKES SENSE. She actually acts like a trans character WOULD. I am 99% sure they never planned to make this character trans, and they forced even more diversity into an already a very diverse show. I find this lame and illogical. They ruined a perfectly good, diverse character - a straight female football coach who struggles to fit in within gender roles. It is not a common character type to see on tv, I thought she was perfect. Goddamn Glee, they really had no good ideas after season 5.

This is kind of unrealistic. No reasonable psychologist would give someone a gender dysphoria diagnosis and be ok with them having top surgery or hormones immediately. That takes months if not years to do all of that. Coach can’t just change his female body into a male body in the span of a week! Top surgery recovery takes months then lower surgery happens in multiple stages spanning at least a year without complications (and there usually are) and this often can’t happen without a hysterectomy and recovery from the hysterectomy before lower surgery is even a topic of discussion. I get this is a television drama but it’d be nice if it were a bit more realistic

when y’all told me beiste was trans i thought she was a trans woman 😭 glees got me mad fucked up im almost done with season four but then someone said beiste was a trans MAN i got so confused. dude i had this nice storyline planned in my head of beiste and unique having a good talk or some shit, but beiste is a man? if this was real life i wouldn’t have any second thoughts at all on beiste’s identity, but it just feels like it wasn’t handled very well at all?? i dont know i’m just very upset, this was not the way i thought the story was going...

I strongly dislike how they made Shanon trans. HER story was about learning to love HERself. She was a masculine girl on the outside, not a guy. They made a big deal out of her wanting to be accepted as a beatifull woman and shattered it by making her trans. Transgender choir scene was beautifull and so moving, but i wish the writters actually showed someone struggling with identity (unic didn't stuggle) before transitioning, not just turn someone trans out of the blue for the sake of crossing out a box.

I appreciate that a lot of the comments have come around on this. I hated that they did this to Beiste's character because it felt like a betrayal of the character that had been previously established. Dot-Marie Jones has always been one of my favorite actors. I'll watch anything with her in it and I loved her character before this happened. She was crying to Will saying "I'm just a regular girl" and then they shoehorned in a sex change for the character. The entire last season of Glee was a disaster and this was just one of many mistakes made.

I've loved Dot ever since she was the coach in Lizzie McGuire who, masculine and tough as she was, sewed her own dresses to go line dancing with her husband because they didn't make dresses that would fit her arms. I've always respected this strong powerful woman that opposed stereotypes while proudly being a strong woman that loves herself for who she is. That's who coach Beiste was too and this took it away.

I love Coach Beaste. She became more and more confident throughout the show and now she has the courage to do what she’s always wanted to do. Good for her. I mean it. Everyone should do what they have to do to be comfortable with themselves, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone.

I absolutely hated this storyline. Beiste had a wonderful story about how she hated how people didn’t treat her like a girl. How it hurt her when people didn’t recognize her as a girl but always as “one of the guys”. It was a great storyline for girls who may not appear as feminine as others. Then they go and make it the stereotype of “she doesn’t check the common boxes of femininity so she MUST be a guy”.

This storyline doesn’t make sense! Through I like how they treated transexuality, they could have done this on another new character, or not at all. Coach beiste always was a great character because (s)he showed us that having masculine attitudes doesn’t mean that you are less woman. And they throw it all away... think that they did that to have an impact about this delicate topic, but in my opinion they did it wrong

Thank you, for even though you don’t like how they handled the storyline, you still correctly gender Beiste
@goobie_snoob3rt4 жыл бұрын
Since everyone is confused; Basically Coach Beiste always wanted to feel like a woman because he's attracted to men and most men he's attracted to are straight. He always thought he needed to stay a woman, but he always felt like a man deep down. People can still be attracted to the opposite gender while wanted to change into the opposite gender.

What I loved most about this scene is how Sheldon made it clear that he didn't hate being a woman. With transgenders its not about hating the gender they were at birth, its about them being comfortable and getting their body in "alignment" with how they feel on the inside.

Everybody’s saying they didn’t like this, but I don’t think they realized that he thought he was a tomboy and he didn’t regret everything he’s been through as a women. Yes, this came out of nowhere, but I don’t think it was the worst storyline glee came out with (I’m not trans myself, so I’m no expert in this, and I’m not trying to act like one)

im trans and shows typically offer shit representation but glee actually managed to make some great trans rep with beiste and unique!! however, it feels like a lazy writing choice, like they couldn't keep up with the "masculine and strong woman" thing. this could've been so much better if there was foreshadowing, and we actually saw signs of beiste being trans earlier on throughout the show but we didn't, because it was obviously an unplanned decision.

Like actually winning football games, making Christmas wishes come true, shining a light on DV, being vulnerable here n there, Shannon beiste had it going on character wise. I’m not sure about, I think Sheldon? I haven’t gotten that far in the season yet but I hope it goes well.

Season 6 was kinda confusing but I always liked how they did this episode. The transgender person in this episode may have always been “girly” and wanted to be a woman but what people fail to see is people hide shit. They hide who they are cause of what the world may think. I think they did this episode justice
