But that was the thing. Her whole character development was that you don’t have to fit the gender norms to be who you are. You can be a strong woman that loves sport and wears pants and be a tomboy. They already had a character that was perfect to complete the trans journey. They just turned around and gave the message, if your a tomboy and like sport, you aren’t a girl, you’re a trans man.

I’m a trans guy and I whole heartedly agree. I don’t want any more tomboys transitioning only to detransition, realizing they made the wrong choice. I am so sad that cis people end transitioning. It’s depressing to think about because they become how I felt before I transitioned. Tomboys might look at this as them being transgender, when it’s not.

I’m a transgender man and I hate seeing trans men portrayed in tv shows as they always get them wrong, however this is the only show that did it right so I’m grateful for that. BUT this was a stupid idea. I get that glee has always been a forward thing show and I love that about it but coach being trans came out of no where. And I liked the fact that she was very masculine while also being a woman. By making her trans the creators are basically reinforcing the stereotype that if you’re a masculine woman you’re actually a man. Meh idk. Just my thoughts.

This story line didn't really make any sense. In the earlier seasons Coach Beiste always felt like a girl on the inside but in the last season she suddenly wants to transition into a man?? I liked her character because she showed that you don't have to follow the stereotypes placed on your gender, but then the producers decided to do a complete 180 and make her seem like she wanted to be male the whole time. I feel like the producers only created this storyline because they wanted to appeal to more audience since transgender was a big issue at the time, and they couldn't be bothered putting some thought into the storylines because they just wanted to get glee over and done with. I love glee but season 6 had really random and terrible storylines.

Lola Lol I agree with you. I liked Beiste’s character cause she showed that you can be a tomboy, do sports, coach a high school football team and still love men. You can do what you love, even if it’s boy stuff, and still feel like a girl. I would even say that her character was feminist. I'm not transphobic or anything, of course not, I just feel like they made her transformation to engage plot holes, which felt forced and not respectful - I 100% agree with you with all the storyline thing. I think that seasons 5 and 6 were horrible, and had no reasonable archs. They should have stopped glee at the end of the third season, even though season 4 wasn’t that bad.

I think the difference was that Unique was part of New Directions, and Sue just saw it as more of their "aren't we diverse" tagline than actually genuine, especially because she was just a teen (remember when she asked Kurt how he knew if he was gay or not and not to be too quick to use a label?), but by the time Bieste came out in S6, Sue had had her eyes opened and understood it more, plus Bieste was her friend and had it confirmed by a psychiatrist. Oooooor it was shitty writing because the Glee writers were clutching at straws by S6. :p

As a trans guy myself, I agree with others who say that Bieste coming out as a trans man is kinda coming out of the blue. But he (yes, I will still use male pronouns because despite everything, he identifies as such and I will therefore respect him) could possibly just repressed those feelings before. But he always said he WANTED to feel like a girl. Aka he probably didn't really feel like one. But yeah, I think they could've gone in a different direction too. If they wanted to include a transman too, it would've been great to bring in Sunshine again since the actor is actually trans and has transitioned.

Ignoring how well they handled this storyline (cos kudos to them, the writers did a brilliant job getting it right, even if it came out of the blue) everything about this story pissed me off. Bieste was such an awesome character and didn't need to have a trans storyline, cos it was just clearly jumping on the bandwagon of ticking "diversity" boxes, instead of actually making sense to the show. I think what pissed me off more though was how Unique was almost brushed aside in the wake of this: there were articles calling Bieste the "first trans person on Glee" and "omg such a brave storyline" when Unique had been talking about being trans since series 3, even saying "I want to match what's on the inside" to Kurt and Mercedes. Like, they had such an amazing character there, but they just ignored her and instead of fleshing out Unique and looking more into it, they chose to make someone completely new and go "hey look! we're talking about being trans and you get to see the before and after to see how great our make up team is!!!"

That's the stupidest plotline in the entire show. This is extremely inconsistent with her character. She always said she wanted to be treated as a woman and that inside she was just a girl like any other. I also find this offensive to masculine women! Just because someone is a masculine athletic woman doesn't mean she is trans or gay! They have a great trans character - Unique. She actually MAKES SENSE. She actually acts like a trans character WOULD. I am 99% sure they never planned to make this character trans, and they forced even more diversity into an already a very diverse show. I find this lame and illogical. They ruined a perfectly good, diverse character - a straight female football coach who struggles to fit in within gender roles. It is not a common character type to see on tv, I thought she was perfect. Goddamn Glee, they really had no good ideas after season 5.

Such a perfect scene. Not just with how authentically Coach Beiste tells their own story, but the juxtaposition of "blond idiot Sam" asking the 'stupid questions' for the benefit of the audience, and Sue Sylvester giving so much power by stepping down for a moment as the school's "resident heel" to still be her usual snarky self, but combine it with love and compassion. And then of course like 5 minutes later she's planning her next literal felony to show those New Direction kids what-for :P but that's what makes the moment great.

This story line made no sense. It felt like they had just shoe horned it in because unique was gone. In previous seasons it was all about how she felt like a girl on the inside and wanted to show that more. She was a great character as she showed that femininity comes in all shapes and sizes which is rarely shown. By doing this story line it almost goes against that lesson. I know some people will say that I am against transgender people because of this but that is entirely not true. I love that glee showed a variety of issues including trans issues but this was not the character to do it with

No, there is nothing wrong with your opinion and I totally agree. I find it annoying how disagreeing with a trans character, or something a famous trans person does in their personal life, or just disagreeing on trans issues in general is seen as transphobic. If you accept trans people, make them feel welcome and accepted you are not transphobic, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Him coming out, him being trans, his experience fits mine. It may seem sudden or like "masculine women have to be men". But it isn't, the way they showed trans people like Coach Beiste and Unique, these were real experiences. He may not fit your experience as a trans man, but he fits mine. And they kept him a gay man, you rarely see that. Seeing him has made me so happy, because recently I kept being told over and over again that I will never be who i am, that i am disgusting and still a girl. That being a gay man is some stupid fantasy. This character my not be seen as representation that you want, but he has helped me feel seen. Everyone deserves to be seen.

It really isn't out of the blue, he always hinted to trying to fit into womanhood, but never actually finding a place. I tried for a while to just be a masculine woman, to fit into womanhood, but I couldn't. Also with the timelines of the show, he could have been coming to this conclusion with his psychologist for a while. And is being approved for medical transition because of more than the diagnosis. You have to think of the characters more so than just their screen time, it's like looking into a whole other universe, fiction is up to your interpretation.

This was forced, this wasnt the original opening plot for Season 6, after the Finn actor passed away, they had to rewrite the entire last season. And this was one of those "out of thin air" stories that got written in. The actress had no clue beforehand until they were on set, that means it was a last minute decision.

This is kind of unrealistic. No reasonable psychologist would give someone a gender dysphoria diagnosis and be ok with them having top surgery or hormones immediately. That takes months if not years to do all of that. Coach can’t just change his female body into a male body in the span of a week! Top surgery recovery takes months then lower surgery happens in multiple stages spanning at least a year without complications (and there usually are) and this often can’t happen without a hysterectomy and recovery from the hysterectomy before lower surgery is even a topic of discussion. I get this is a television drama but it’d be nice if it were a bit more realistic

I strongly dislike how they made Shanon trans. HER story was about learning to love HERself. She was a masculine girl on the outside, not a guy. They made a big deal out of her wanting to be accepted as a beatifull woman and shattered it by making her trans. Transgender choir scene was beautifull and so moving, but i wish the writters actually showed someone struggling with identity (unic didn't stuggle) before transitioning, not just turn someone trans out of the blue for the sake of crossing out a box.

I appreciate that a lot of the comments have come around on this. I hated that they did this to Beiste's character because it felt like a betrayal of the character that had been previously established. Dot-Marie Jones has always been one of my favorite actors. I'll watch anything with her in it and I loved her character before this happened. She was crying to Will saying "I'm just a regular girl" and then they shoehorned in a sex change for the character. The entire last season of Glee was a disaster and this was just one of many mistakes made.

I've loved Dot ever since she was the coach in Lizzie McGuire who, masculine and tough as she was, sewed her own dresses to go line dancing with her husband because they didn't make dresses that would fit her arms. I've always respected this strong powerful woman that opposed stereotypes while proudly being a strong woman that loves herself for who she is. That's who coach Beiste was too and this took it away.

I absolutely hated this storyline. Beiste had a wonderful story about how she hated how people didn’t treat her like a girl. How it hurt her when people didn’t recognize her as a girl but always as “one of the guys”. It was a great storyline for girls who may not appear as feminine as others. Then they go and make it the stereotype of “she doesn’t check the common boxes of femininity so she MUST be a guy”.

im trans and shows typically offer shit representation but glee actually managed to make some great trans rep with beiste and unique!! however, it feels like a lazy writing choice, like they couldn't keep up with the "masculine and strong woman" thing. this could've been so much better if there was foreshadowing, and we actually saw signs of beiste being trans earlier on throughout the show but we didn't, because it was obviously an unplanned decision.
