DA is one of those timelessly classic show that you could rewatch 100th times and still don’t get tired of it and you find new interesting things you hadn’t noticed before.

You've got THAT right, Marina. My partner & I strangely have difficulty sleeping when it's too quiet, so we leave DA on most every night! (We switch it around with Murdoch Mysteries periodically, but generally its DA!) I'm a terrible sleeper so I normally wake after a couple of hours and watch until I drift off again and I'm continuously catching as you said 'interesting' things I hadn't noticed before too! I adored the show and will continue to follow it as long as they're putting it out there! 4-ever a DA fan!

It's the best series piece ever composed, in my opinion. It brings a strange sort of excitement every time you hear it. There's a thrill that goes with it and a smile that attaches itself to it. It's perfect. Music is an integral part of any movie or show, and it makes this show seem like a movie every time. Without the music, any show would be a bore.

Rob James Collier is truly amazing. I haven't seen such a perfect cast for a long time, overall. Naming a "best" actor is simply impossible. Matthew Crawley's accidental death was a bit redundant in my opinion. And I love the wardrobe of this era ...

I love Downton Abbey and still do! Yesterday, I began watching The Gilded Age and again, loving it. To me, Julian Fellowes is the Jane Austen of film. He plays the characters in a way that is very relatable not only to the present but to the future ahead. He knows the human condition and allows for the characters' development. Even Thomas! My goodness, Dan Stevens can even look good covered in mud in the battle scenes 😘. Sybil was the youngest of the sisters, but the most mature, and she really came into her own as a war nurse. Lavinia was a sweet character, if a bit one-note, but she definitely deserved better. And Mary despite her huge faults is still my favorite character, and her relationship with Mathew in the second series was the best part.

Funny you say that about the Dowager Countess. Violet reminds me very much of my maternal grandmother. Her father, whilst not of the upper classes, was certainly of about equal rank to Matthew before he became heir. Disgrace had him shipped to the Colonies, but Granny and Grampa Dawson raised their girls with certain standards. A sharp wit and the coarse back of the tongue were very much in evidence.

Dan Stevens was never as attractive as he was in Downton Abbey. While hardly fat, he was "soft", but his appearance only added to his charm and hypnotic good looks and mesmerizing voice. He did "Summer in February" during the last season of DA, and looked the same, but for his next movie, "The Guest", the director wanted him to buff up -- lose about 40 lbs and get ripped. Which he did!! That was in 2013, and while he's not as buff as in that movie, he remained incredibly thin. While he obviously is healthier and is still a very handsome man, he definitely lost something. Still gorgeous, but the appeal he had with his longer hair and "soft" face, has disappeared. But I'll always be a fan as he's a very gifted actor. For all of you who enjoyed Dan Stevens in DA, you definitely should see him in the two movies he did previously, which got him the part. First was his first big break, when he played the lead in the BBC 3-part mini-series, "The Line of Beauty", adapted by the really talented Andrew Davies. Dan is brilliant and steals the entire movie. Then came the BBC version of "Sense and Sensibility" in 2008. Another beautiful portrayal which led to Downton Abbey.

Those days must have been hard, the pressure on the family to keep everything going, that responsability, and the hard hard work people downstairs had to perform day after day, did not leave much space and time for all that went on in the series. Real life on an estate in that period must have been tough for both, downstairs as well as upstairs. It is such aa awesome detail that Cora, a born american, really has an accurate accent of an american who has lived in england for several years. You can really hear her pronounce some words with a total british accent, but most of the time, she usually has an american accent that is just sprinkled with a lot british accent-isms. Probably overlooked by many, but I think it is totally 100% completely accurate for someone in her position. I imagine that wasn't really written in the script, but the actress really nails it down as a matter of a personal acting choice. So cool!!

I have never seen soo wooden acting as that woman who plays Cora. It's hard work watching her parts.
@STSGuitar163 жыл бұрын
@@Rosie-fj7yr ehh, I disagree lol. I would say cousin Isobell is much more wooden than Cora. Though, I personally don't find either of them to be bad at their rolls. I think Cora is generally just a kind, caring, and patient woman already, and her having spent decades in a country where a lot of people in general tend to have more of a "wooden" personality. So those two factors combined together give you a person who would act just as Cora does in the show; she was already an easy-going, kind woman in America, and her being shaped into that british aristocrat mold for so long might make her seem "wooden," but I personally don't see her that way.

@@STSGuitar16 You do know that " Cora " is not a real person don't you. ??????
@STSGuitar163 жыл бұрын
@@Rosie-fj7yr Yes, I do. I'm not commenting on Elizabeth McGovern, I am commenting on the character, Cora Crawley, and that I believe the actress did a fine job at portraying her. If you think the actress herself is incapable of being more than just "wooden" in any performance, I suggest you do some research. She played the part of Cora in a way that felt natural and realistic, given the story of her character. I'm not sure what you would've liked to see instead, but to me, it seems like an overall pretty spot-on embodiment of the character of Cora Levinson Crawley to me. What specifically don't you like about her character? PS. I'm not mad or anything lol, just curious of why you come to that conclusion for her?
@Rosie-fj7yr3 жыл бұрын
@@STSGuitar16 Hi, I have personally nothing against Elizabeth it's just I don't think she is a good actress. I think she should stick to playing in her rock band. That's just my opinion and I'm guessing we are all entitled to have an opinion.

Love love Downton Abbey!!
@TSKseattle3 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised nobody recognizes that Downton Abbey is a high budget remake of Upstairs Downstairs from the 70's Same time period (the Titanic), similar "she's rich, he struggles", same elicit mixing of up- and down-stairs. Yes, I know, the 70's were 200 years ago and no one remembers, but it was just as amazing to watch at the time, just as much of a "must watch" show
@steeviem18353 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you on that. But I guess being a period drama, the history for that time meant that it was the subject for most content. Although as the series progress, it does change in comparison to Upstairs Downstairs.

And this one is based on real history which is another reason I like it so much. English aristocrats marrying American women for money wasc a real thing.

I didn’t like Upstairs Downstairs. Drab!
@L2069-e8y3 жыл бұрын
Right! I've been wondering why people haven't noticed this, except that a lot of them weren't alive then! The basic concept of Downton is a direct ripoff of Upstairs, Downstairs as are a number of the plots, for instance: a "lower class" person marrying into the family, the butler and head housekeeper getting married, a black jazz band coming to the house, a character dying in the flu epidemic and then the King coming to dinner in the 2019 movie. Upstairs, Downstairs was the first British drama to address the consequences of WW1 in civilian life and it did so dramatically.

Much to my surprise, I absolutely adored this series. "Modern" history has never interested me, but Downton Abbey was so balanced and edgy....the staff are as interesting as the gentry, with great storylines of their own. The family are decent, good people who manage to be lofty without being snooty. Any other series that I've explored has failed to live up to this. (BERKLEY SQUARE was not bad...only 10 episodes though)

The Black ( Bubonic) Plague is still regarded as the most lethal pandemic in recorded history, killing between 75 - 200,000,000 people in Eurasia, North Africa and Europe during the mid 1300s. That was during a time when the world population was significantly smaller than present day numbers. It dwarfs both the Spanish Flu and Covid in relative devastation.
