Recently, in the comments underneath our LockdownTV KZbin videos, people have been saying that our videos are being ‘downrated’ on KZbin search. Type in Aella, or Michael Levitt, for example, and videos come above ours in the search results that are much older, viewed much fewer times, and come from channels that have much smaller followings. I hate the idea of being conspiracist, and feel it’s a bit rich to make accusations of censorship against a platform that has brought us millions of views and over 110,000 followers, but could it be that heterodox channels like ours have found their way onto a blacklist of channels that should be ever so gently… suppressed?
This was one of the questions I put to Glenn Greenwald - perhaps one of the most famous free speech and civil liberties advocates in the world. Talking from his home in the mountains outside Rio di Janeiro, his answer was unsettling: “You don’t need to be a conspiracist to believe any of that. They acknowledge that they are doing all the things that you just described.”
The pandemic has brought this issue to the fore even more visibly, with channels and videos regularly being taken down having been judged as dangerous to public health, and the KZbin CEO announcing earlier in the year that anything that fell foul of WHO guidelines would be removed (notwithstanding that organisation's patchy, to say the least, record during this pandemic).
“It’s incredibly dangerous,” says Greenwald. “What competency do tech giants have to arbitrate over science and health policy? … How did they get into a position of some sort of philosopher-king to be able to sit in judgement as overlords of our discourse and decree not only what is permissible but what is true and false when it comes to highly complex questions such as how to manage a pandemic, or whether vaccines are safe and effective, or whether the balances of a lockdown are justified by their cost? These are incredibly complicated decisions that a society ought to be debating.”
It becomes even more sinister when it dovetails with party politics. Greenwald sees the merger of the Democratic Party and the tech platforms as a serious threat to free speech:
“You can look at every metric and it all leads to the same conclusion. There is a union that includes the establishment wing of the Democratic Party, Wall Street and Silicon Valley. One way you can see that is that Silicon Valley overwhelmingly poured its money into the campaign coffers of the Democratic Party… Their employees are overwhelmingly progressive, overwhelmingly liberal, overwhelmingly Democrat and whenever there is agitation within these companies for greater censorship, it is almost always on the grounds that Right-wing or conservative voices ought to be censored.
To me, that censorship episode involving the Hunter Biden reporting in the weeks leading up to an election was one of the most alarming and significant events to take place in politics in years. That one of the primary means that citizens have to communicate with one another was simply manipulated to prevent incriminating reporting about the candidate that the employees and executives and shareholders of those means of communication wanted to win the election. It was pure brute censorship of the most toxic and damaging kind.”
The prognosis, according to Greenwald, is not good. Instead of being magnanimous in victory, the Democrats are likely to use their influence to further shut down discourse they find unacceptable.
“It’s like a tide that keeps coming in. You hope that it doesn’t get to you. As long as it doesn’t you feel free on the beach, but you see the water inching ever closer.”

The cure for bad speech and bad ideas, is more speech and debate, not censorship! Censorship only causes more people to seek out what's being censored, than what would've come across that information in the first place and also gives that information more validation from the very fact that they're trying to hide it!! Censorship, never has, nor will ever work. It's completely counter productive and has the opposite effect to what it is trying to achieve!!

I agree with you whole heartedly. We as human beings allow ourselves to be setup by Big Tech when we ingratiate ourselves with the latest toys. Anti Social media (as I prefer to call it) is nothing more than the modern day equivalent of cattle herding. We are all guilty of being THAT consumer simply by virtue of our presence here. When the incessant push is for all things electronic including all the variations of essentially the same thing, then an understanding of the science of personal psychology becomes ever more important. The complexity of society as it is, Individualism versus collectivism and our ability to portray that to others via body language should NEVER be replaced by a keyboard and I fear that some day the fiction of a dystopian 1984 world will eventually become FACT..

@Arabella Smyth Yes technology enslaves when we become dependent upon it. Social media is designed to create addiction through attention and likes which activate our pleasure/reward system. Power is the ability to get a person or person to do what you want where they otherwise would not. Force is not the only way to enslave someone or get them to do what you want. I have not had cable since 2013 and with the exception of some recent participation I have not been on social media since 2017. One person sadly does not make a revolution. The most jaw dropping and spot on analysis regarding technology is the unabomber manifesto. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/longterm/unabomber/manifesto.text.htm

True, this is very scary and the government goons are trying to force everyone to take the vaccine despite clear health risks. Just this weekend a man died only 25 MINUTES after getting the vaccine! This happened to others also, a CA man died only hours after getting the shot. What about the freedom of choice? Maybe some people want to take vitamins and use nutrition to boost natural immunity and then if exposed the immune system can better fight the virus. Censorship of alternative methods is evil.

No that’s not what critical thinkers do. Critical thinkers test alternative hypotheses. If you just look for them you have an imagination, but not a sense of critical thinking. Critical thinkers follow the scientific method. Look that up. Scientists and judges are critical thinkers. They can make mistakes but they will be corrected by applying the scientific method - not by spewing out alternative explanations which are have not been tested by a process of falsification. Conspiracy theorists thrive on the idea free speech about alternative explanations and “discourse” arguments which is what this going on here.

@@solarwind907 I don’t know how they determine their algorithms or what content falls under it. But Twitter, Facebook, and KZbin stated they were banning any “covid misinformation” and “unproven treatments.” Both of those are extremely broad and have no basis coming from a tech company to begin with, but even if you agree that everything they’ve done so far has been good, it still runs the risk of shutting down important information in the future, all because they decided that they have to arbitrate the truth to the dumb public. And people who would fall victim to misinformation, now would just go to a different platform. It doesn’t do any good to arbitrarily decide what can and cannot be said; if anything it drives people away and lets them feel persecuted and rebellious for believing whatever the tech giants say you can’t believe.

An important thing is to remember that "conspiracy theory" doesn't necessarily imply an erroneous/fringe belief. It has come to mean that to people who don't consider the words that make up the phrase, but it just means a theory (an overarching explanation of the observed facts) that involves a conspiracy by some entity. Tons of conspiracy theories are actually very probable if not absolutely certain.

But since you brought the subject matter up, there have been a LOT of sketchy things that the American people are keen to question. The fact our questioning for more information of incidents should tell you we're being lied to; and leads me to believe that even our questioning of being censored is being censored. Extremely obscene situation that silences people. Including you, should you say the wrong thing.

@@willismcgee7210 I think it depends on where people draw the line. Societies have values. Some things are not allowed, others are. I'm just telling you I would draw the line differently than you. For instance I was washing my car somewhere and someone else had their music blaring. It was about raping women with broom stick. I didn't think that was cool or fun even if there were not women around. I told him to shut it off and he did. I guess I violated his freedom of expression but I did not think there was any redeeming quality to the message in a public place. As far as I'm concerned people can do whatever they want to each other if it makes them happy but keep it private. Are you going to allow people to tell kids they should commit suicide on facebook? maybe you think that's okay too. I don't. I sure as hell don't think I'm better than you. Actually appreciate you sharing your opinion but I don't think freedom of speech should be limitless.

Big tech censorship is a very real issue, as is rightly said, once they are aligned to government, they have unlimited power of control over what is seen and heard. Never before since Nazi propaganda has it been done on a scale like is being seen with covid or the US elections. If it is allowed to continue, and judging by big techs inclusion in things like the World Economic Forum it likely will continue, things are going to get rather interesting in the coming years.

Her “let’s make a list” is not my style of leadership... ever. AOC may have a particular idea that is credible but to praise the individual makes me suspicious. I also noticed the absence of voting irregularities. I would have preferred Mr Greenwald IF he stood his ground, “I won’t comment on voting irregularities as there may be consequences in KZbin” (or similar). There must be transparency... there’s something deeply wrong and it’s not just in our media. Mr Greenwald is waking a minefield and integrity only comes from having an iron cast constitution. His stance on AOC and the November elections has made me wary. The media incinerated their trust me tickets so any past kudos mr greenwald had is gone.

Hi Derrar Hassane, interesting that you should choose coffee shops as your forum!, as it happens during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in England, particularly in London coffee shops became the number one venue for a huge surge in public debate!, this has been reported by contemporary and later historians as being the source of a great deal of libertarian change!. There is of course the very significant element in this which is that there is no clear sign of any structural changes in western political administration, there have been short periods of apparent change, as during the nineteen sixties but it all soon fell away with the massive increases in global trading and social degeneration. There is no clear evidence that the good will of the people has ever done any real good so it doesn't matter if we find public speaking is restricted, we can still say whatever we like to those around us that we trust, and it is them and only them that we should be concerned with!, the life and choices of all more distant people is none of our business!. Cheers, Richard.

@@richardharvey1732 I like to think that social (media ) is more like a coffee shops , teashops or even a park ( speakers corner ) where everyone can speak their minds and of course without prejudices and with respects , with people we trust and with those who would like to establish a trust ...I was just watching Elon musk interview early and he said " the greatest invention humankind had is , language " , I tend to agree with him , ..so let's preserve that right for everyone to speak and/or write , whatever ..

Ha, what a laugh. Pretentious, snooty Glenn Greenwald (who believes the 9/11 Commission Report) actually thinks Biden won; has he even glanced at the massive amount of evidence of election fraud? Here, do yourself a favor, Glenn and check this out. It's only 36 pages with over 140 citations by Ph.D Peter Navarro: tinyurl.com/y9y4gu3p

Good interview re: censorship. However it would be nice to hear from those who have been at the receiving end of censorship + loss of income + job insecurity ... to see that it is a more far ranging issue. It is not only big tech, but also academia, newspapers, etc. who engage in a multifaceted throttling of the coverage of various issues. Prof. Mark Crispin Miller comes to mind...

The goal should always be to be truthful. However, being able to say objectionable things is only beneficial as it should lead to debate and a deeper dive of the facts. If the statement is worth defending, the facts will back it up.

Dear UnHerd, I would encourage you the reconsider when to use the word conspiracy theory and when not. I personally feel like it is used too lightly and often in wrong context. I think we are in danger of making the same mistake that people made centuries ago calling Galileos work to study astrology being anti-christian. Today if you study immunology, or pandemic...you get lightly called conspiracist.... I think it is a huge mistake, because it labels the activity completely wrong and discredits it.

Wow, great, particularly un-herd, much-needed interview! "Whom do we address (about grievances), Freddie?" Why, Kafka and Orwell, wake them up and tell them, they'll completely understand. And the song "Clicking Blues" also understands the real prospect that: "... No one remembers privacy, Nobody knows what freedom is, Away they went, clicking down the drain..." Indeed, "Power is sooo exhilarating and addictive," Glenn. How refreshing to see you stick to a level-headed liberal principle of free speech from what, otherwise, looks like a bit of a salon/luxury Communist Brazie stronghold. How refreshing to hear you acknowledge that not everything bad is because of Trump and that Trump has been a media bonanza (including for you). What's also remarkable, however (from a quick remark you make), is that you seem unaware (what Trump surely knows from Publicity 101) that the media have always been a publicity outlet, mainly, for various levels of Gov. In totalitarian theocracies, communist and military dictatorships the media are 100% publicity, in democracies, they are 85% - 95% publicity. Alas, since 2016, we could see and hear how even public TV and public radio have become 98% publicity (against Trump).

Swine flu had such low transmission rate relative to covid 19. Your wife living in the same house as you would have a 10-20% chance of getting it. With covid 19 its significantly higher. I also think we have made many mistakes with regards to covid 19 but its a different beast to swine flu.
