Glenn Hoddle - Wasted

I was going to write a long-winded treatise on why it never really worked out for Glenn Hoddle at England level, despite nearly always being the best player on the pitch. Far less taxing to simply sum it up with three phrases: Route One, the class system (don't laugh, it suffuses everything) and a little bit of fear and loathing -... A shame, but he was thrilling to watch and, when given his wind, a world-beater.

Absouletly you are right. Everything will be missing what ever is said for him.he was beyond the words, he is more than a player. İ had seen him as he was scoring a goal on tv . We had only one channel in turkey and when the football from europe started on rv, glenn hoddle' s terrific goal had been displayed on tv. İ had been waiting for his legend goal for one week. After that time, i had been his fan. İ am 52 yo now but england has not had a real, talented midfielder as glenn hoddle yet...my words how time flies those were the days

Growing up in Trinidad and watching the English First Division League I fell in love with Glenn Hoddle’s style of play. He is the main reason I have supported Spurs and Three Lions. When I played football I would try and emulate all his moves and passes. The most gifted British player of all time. He was a complete midfielder and just as dangerous with both feet. Hoddle was thing of beauty to behold. My very first England his jersey was from the 1982 World Cup.

Glenn Hoddle was a top, top player and one of my footballing heroes. I'm a CITY fan so have no bias, but he made the game look easy. This country cannot appreciate or nurture greatness. You can see from this video, aside from his incredible touch, balance, vision, and passing ability, is his physical STRENGTH, SPEED of movement and thought, he runs past opposing players like they are not there, in tight spaces and tight angles he creates time and space for himself, he keeps the ball well, never wastes it. He was clearly a superb athlete - and a great finisher and scorer of great goals - what a player !!

He had an awareness of other players like nobody else I’ve ever seen. His touch, vision and skill would today have made him one of the most expensive footballers in the game. I cannot think of another player in the history of the game who could or can pass like him. Nobody will ever convince me that he wasn’t a genius.

Remember, you're watching a God with two of the best feet in football, either foot, made no difference to Glenn. Just watching that again makes you tingle, really, just how good was he man? I'm a Scotsman, who's a Liverpool supporter. But, hand on my heart, the greatest player from this island of Great Britain has to be Glenn Hoddle. Graceful on the ball, faster than anyone gave him credit for, brave too. Passes short, long, with spin and check. A total footballing genius. It was a gift to see him in action, a master footballer, up there with Maradona (the Greatest), better than Zidane, Platini, Stoichkov, Dalglish and Hagi (tremendous through they all were).

Ditto with the Scotsman and I have a soft spot for the 'pool ( that's not a marsh on the Wirral ) but just watching this footage and seeing how he not only can strike it with both feet but he doesn't appear to favor one of his feet at all when moving with the ball. He taps it with the left, runs, taps it with the right. Just watched some of the goals in another video with him just battering it in from all over the field. He was too smooth and I think some people thought he wasn't trying hard enough because he made it look effortless. He was a big man for the skill and balance he had and was really an earlier Zidane in that. Good in the air as well. I remember playing with some African lads in Switzerland and they kept leaving me for dead but it wasn't because they were that fast. They just didn't get all tensed up when they turned on the speed and I was so used to the British huff and puff that I was caught out. Hoddle was like that. He didn't tense up when he turned up the effort.

@@errcoche One of the greatest attributes Glenn had to his game was awareness, he knew where the runners were, no matter what direction he was looking, he just knew, and the delivery when he gave it was on the button, sometimes if wet, with a chip of backspin to stop the ball merely skipping out of play. He also had his own ways of creating himself time, watch how many ways you see him collect/gather in a pass, it's good to watch, because it really teaches you how to gain that elusive yard without doing anything other than, moving toward the pass/ball to take a pass early and move away, or leaving the ball to come right across him and pick it up off his back foot heading off in another direction. He's a player all youth players should be told to watch how he did things, that's what made him so much time.

@@hardwired548 I didn't play much football myself but the little I did play made me realize how difficult it is on a full size pitch with 22 players to process the information about who is where and what your options are. It's absolutely a skill that some guys have better developed than others. I coached some kids here in the US ( even I knew more than the Americans at that time ) and the one thing I tried to get through to them was the importance of talking and letting a guy with his eye on the ball know where you were with sound. I am always on at my nephew to move toward the ball in basketball rather than just waiting for it to get there.

@@errcoche There's a reason we see many not really knowing just how good Hoddle really was, it's because in those days, we had either the Big Match or MOTD highlights, nobody apart from those of us at the games really had anyway of knowing what we all knew. So all we can do is try to drive home just how good he really really was. It's hard to get people to think you mean it, when I say seriously. I'm yet to see better! Not only do I mean it, I find it difficult to understand people that don't see it. You know real greatness/genius, when you could watch a great play all day and never get bored watching him, because you never knew what was coming next. The closest thing to compare him with today would be, he's the Ronnie O'Sullivan of English and World football. Hod was God.

it is fascinating watching this video. Hoddle has always been regarded (and rightly so) as one of the finest passers of the ball ever to play football. He's also noted for scoring some extraordinary goals either on the volley or at distances that defy belief. What is note from this video is that he also had amazing close control of the ball and a superb ability to round opponents. He really was the most completely skilled player ever to emerge from English football (think the love child of Bobby Charlton and George Best).

I remember going over the spurs training ground & watching him, I was mesmerised, I couldn’t believe a player could do the things he did with the ball. I remember once watching him hit a string of balls placed at greater distances from the goal & the coach telling him to hit the bar with each one, & he did. & at an open day they had rings (probably hula hoops) setup at different distances & he was sending the ball into them & the spin he’d put on the ball would kill it, it’d bounce up but the spin would take it to land inside the ring. I tried it in my garden & spent ages knocking on my neighbours doors asking for my ball back after its bounce straight out & over the fence. My grandad used to take me to see him at WHL & I’d just watch what he was doing with or without the ball. Plus always loved that he never tucked his shirt in like all the other players did ❤️

good compilation, and 'Dark Train' to boot! glenn was the best. growing up in the seventies and eighties, the state of the pitches meant that there was little room for error, and the game was physical and direct. then from in among it all was this skinny kid with grace, poise, posture, composure, balance, skills, and not only the vision to spot a pass, but the extraordinary skill to execute that pass with either foot. worst crime in football? seeing one of glenn's defence splitting passes not end up in a goal. i loved watching him play. he was the player i wanted to emulate.

Whilst we all know they (Gerrard and Lampard) certainly didn't play well as a pair, Scholes would always be third choice if there were just room for the one of them. Hoddle was miles superior to Scholes (as Rahman states). Utd were better than Spurs though, hence Scholes gets his fan club claiming him to be a lot better than he really was.

The greatest footballer I've ever seen! I used to watch him twice a week, training and on Saturday game days. Simply unbelievable talent, the things he could do and the time he would create himself with such understanding of where he was, he'd gather a pass early left or right or leave it run across his body and gather it in late leaving his marker for dust then deliver a perfect ball time and time and time again. I watched Hoddle when I first started going to watch spurs in the 70s and he was curling the ball into the top corner from free kicks back then before English footballers even knew how to put spin on it. He was a master of the game even when playing on mud. The great Brian Clough said if he’d been England manager he would’ve built the team around Hoddle. But as usual politics got in the way and stupid, short sighted, old fashioned sluggers in the game with too much influence. That guy brought a thrill and love of exciting skilful football to a young lads heart that I will always be grateful for! Whenever I took to the pitch I was always Hoddle and my best mate was always Brooking. (A hammers fan). Thanks Glenn for the thrills.

Im from Brasil.Even in this land i ever seen someone use both legs like Glen.Nobody here in Brasil knows about that monster player because in the '80s there were no premiere league alive like today.I road in the magagazine at that time and 1998 he was english team coach and was a remarkable midfield with Beckham.Paul Ince and Schols.Today I was watch great games in the world cup and Glen was there against Argentina 1998 and I took look in KZbin and after all these years because now is 2018 just now I watched the most skifull players in the history of England.I know about his religious statament back in 1999 but loose a great thecnichal reference Coach like Glen because a foolish statament like that was terrible for the english team.Im completely impressive with long passes with both legs and also run carry the ball in the same way.

I love your comment luis, I grew up in England always arguing for hoddle to be in the England team, but "flair" players which always was a insulting term in those small minded times, and yet everyone in England are trying to work out why we haven't won nothing in 50 odd years, go figure, although things are changing, at a time when we don't have a hoddle or gasgoine, ah well live in hope, best wishes my friend

@@jumhed994 my two favourite english players but tiss was a different animal. matt just didnt have the work rate, mentality or versatility to make it as an england stalwart. hes not crying himself to sleep at night and neither am i; i wouldnt change him for the world. would shakespeare have been better for writing twice as many plays and sonnets? no. it just makes his plays and sonnets twice as special and doubly read. not sorry i got flowery.

What a player. Technically the best of his time. Unfortunately English football wasn't based on technical ability more box to box, great motor,brave,run 'til he drops.England Managers of the time failed to maximise Hoddles talents.

Cruyff gave have Glenn Hoddle his shirt after the match and said that he was passing the gauntlet on as the greatest midfielder. I still have the newspaper caption stating “Hoddle the master”

I've seen some good ones over the years, from all sorts of clubs up and down the country, but they did not then or do not now compare with the sheer talent of Glenn Hoddle, The sweet FA should hang their collective heads in shame, they have failed a nation. And I reckon you are right it all boils down to jealousy and fear.

Incredible passer...the ball would slide stop but spin...do it never over ran...what technique...I knew he was good but players nowadays can't do that...pirlo..zidane that type of player...just wow!
