I had Breakaway 98. I went back to NHL 96 pretty quickly. Good point on player sizes being a new thing, but I still did not like the stiff controls as opposed to the shoot-em-up-style controls the SNES/Genesis games had

Yoooooo Sheffield Steelers shoutout. Very nice. NHL 99 and Wayne Gretzky 3D go hand in hand, I think. I mean in one, you can try playing Team Japan against the NHL Eastern Conference All-Stars, and in the other, the goalie turns into a wall. Two sides of the same coin.

N64 hockey fans should basically own at least one Gretzky title and NHL 99, and can justify picking up NHL Breakaway 98 because it’s so common and cheap. I looked forward to trying Breakaway 99 for a long time only to realize it’s basically the same game and the allure of it being kind of uncommon isn’t at all something to let excite you. Even looking up the IGN review of Breakaway 99, they start off by referring to the shame of having to give a zero to Olympic Hockey 98 for being the same game and that they can hardly believe another N64 hockey game is guilty of almost the same thing.
@n64glennplant5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I just don’t see a reason for these being worth picking up with better titles on the system

The NHL Hitz series was one of my favourites and if you want the most recent NHL 94 style game on a portable, NHL 2002 for GBA does a good job of that. I had Breakaway 99 as a kid and enjoyed it but didn't love it. I had first played Breakaway 98 before I had an N64 while on vacation when a hotel had N64's and games to rent. Me and my friend played Blades of Steel 99 a lot since that's what he owned and what always sticks out about that is the line "he just missed the post" the commentator says, as if the goal is to hit the post. That one kind of stinks and was bought based on Blades of Steel name recognition from NES.

Does anyone really enjoy going back and playing decades-old simulation style sports games? Other than a short burst of nostalgia, I just don't see any reason to play these relics when new sports titles are built with the same goal in mind, but have vastly superior means to actually deliver realistic gameplay.

NHL 99 from EA on the n64 was a port of nhl 98 on pc and PS. It’s a solid game but as a kid that had nhl 98 on pc (I still consider it the best hockey game ever.. nostalgia) nhl 99 on the n64 was a stripped down game due to lack of audio and player likeness however gameplay was just as solid.

Glenn, did you ever play Mario Lemieux Hockey on the Mega Drive?? Classic. Not as good as NHL 94, but it's the best Mario game on a Sega system :P (Better than Andretti, anyway haha)! Used to have Breakaway 99 and my sibling and I *loved* it. Lots of good times. Busted it out at a lot out birthday parties too. I honestly don't get all the hate, but I haven't played it in a long time. It blew my mind as as kid though. Your reviews of NHL 99 and Gretzky 3D makes me want to trying picking those up. Really enjoyed NHL Stanley Cup on snes, and Mutant League Hockey on genesis (sorry NHL 94, I love you too tho). Blitz on gamecube was also pretty ace, and I think gave a more level playing field between my sibling and I :D I haven't been able to keep up much since then. Most of the sports games just got way too complicated after that and not fun.
