I would just recommend the final title in the series NBA in the Zone 2000. Though I always rather picked up NBA Courtside on my N64 as well as NBA Live 2000 on my PS1. Those are better titles in presentation (for example the mode in which you can unlock Jordan by beating him in the streets) and gameplay-wise. Also the A.I. seems to be far better. Just as you described: NBA in the Zone 2000 was Konamis best effort, but in the year 1999 there were far better entries/basketball sims stealing its show.

I own the three games, but just for the collection as I am not interested at all by basket. But I really feel that '2000 release is quite a huge improvement in terms of graphics. Then as a not basket ball fan, the simulation side and the fact it has a slow gameplay makes that it's definitely not my cup of tea.

I picked up In The Zone 98 as part of a multi-cartridge deal. I found it somewhat fun to play but after beating it once I've never felt the urge to play it again. In addition to Glenn's criticisms, the game is very easy and the AI is not a challenge once you figure it out and you select any decent team. I never lost a game playing on the "All-Star" difficulty.
