In her last scene in season 1, Catelyn goes into the woods and holds a tree. It’s interesting that she does this instead of going and praying in a sept. I think that this is because she wanted to try and find solace in the Old Gods, and in the absence of a weirwood, she just grabs onto a random tree. She mourns Ned’s passing by trying to connect to Ned’s gods.

Actually, Cat and Cersei are two faces of the same coin! While Cersei's love for her children is an extension of her narcissism, Cat's sacrificial love for hers is also irrational and self-destructive: she makes really bad decisions, without considering the long-term consequences of those actions, to the point of even refusing to acknowledge her errors: her capture of Tyrion for his alleged attempt on Bran's life, which led to the devastation of the Riverlands (her own family's lands); and, of course, her releasing Jaime which was pretty much signing Rob's death sentence, as Tywin would never orchestrate the Red Wedding if they still had Jaime under their power!

In the books (and even the show) Cersei literally does virtually nothing to "protect her family," she blatantly doesn't care about her family outside of Joffrey and Jamie-and that only stems from them being extensions of herself (as you kind of stated) so in reality she's loving herself. Not that fair to say Catelyn inherently isn't a schemer either, when she got the letter from her sister it was written in a language they'd made up as children-she wouldn't tell Ned the full contents of the letter and immediately her and Luwin start beckoning Ned to go south..

Not bringing back Clive Mantle as the Greatjon is, in retrospect, an early sign of one of the ways the show ends up going wrong. What makes the books so great (to me) is how truly alive the world is. Everyone in it is always doing something and you can feel that through minor characters like the Greatjon. Like I fully believe GRRM could just as easily write a Greatjon POV as he does a Tyrion. To me, the show quickly ends up feeling like the rest of the world is frozen whilst whatever drives a scene takes place (after S3), because the minor characters just get less and less depth until they simply cease to exist and it is scene to scene big players interacting with big players. The original “King in the North!” Scene is a prime example of how you can give a minor character a chance to truly shine and advance the character of your protagonists through it. I distinctly recall being very disappointed when I realised the Greatjon was probably not going to appear in season 2 after he didn’t the first few episodes. The love given to his minor characters on par with the mains are what makes me love the books and the world. the lack of it is what made me slowly stop loving the show. Think about how many times after their deaths we see mentions of people like Jory Cassel, Fat Tom, Mikken etc. It’s not even though they have a narrative reason for continually being mentioned like, let’s say Ser Hugh of the Vale. They’re just small characters that your favourite characters love, and GRRM doesn’t want you to forget. Just look at how they treated Brynden fucking Blackfish. The North Remembers, but unfortunately it seems towards the end DND did not.
@ImTheMariner3 жыл бұрын
very true indeed, I've given little thought to why I felt the series was pretty empty and boring in its later seasons, and after reading what you said, I agree with you 100% yeah after they ran out of book material to adapt, the cast just kept growing smaller and smaller until we got just the same characters making the same jokes and/or discussing some idiotic strategy. but in the books you have so many characters that you can even remember all of them, which is why I think GRRM is finding it hard to release the winds of winter because of how many different stories he has to write and fit them all in the same book.

@CommanderLongJohn2 жыл бұрын
For a long time I've imagined this Red Wedding scene with the Greatjon that they could've added in, it would've made it even more so dramatic-sad-and reprehensible IMO (combining the book and what could've made for amazing TV): (show would've had to establish Smalljon as one of Robb's personal guards and both some of his staunchest supporters) Greatjon Umber is subdued in a rusty pair of chains, he looks over to see nothing but cold butchery, with his son sprawled out in the middle of the Great Hall coughing up blood-crossbow bolts covering him like fur, "Jon! Get up Jon, get up and fight!" A body beneath his son moves out from underneath, to the Greatjon's horror it was his King, and starts to rise, ("the king in the North arises!") Roose Bolton (clad in pink steel plate-fashioned to look like a man without skin) walks over and stabs Robb ("Jamie Lannister sends his regards")-before another crossbow bolt finishes off Smalljon; Greatjon starts growling intensely, tears streaming from eyes full of fury and rage, and like the sigil of his House snaps out of a pair of chains-blood running down his arms. He back headbutts the man behind him (knocking out all his teeth like the Mountain did to Oberyn, emphasizing how strong he is), takes his sword and lops off the arm of the second, and almost cuts the third man in half from collar bone to rib cage; Roose Bolton (without raising his voice) commands he be taken alive, Greatjon charges at him-an archer hits him in the calf, he keeps going, then another crossbow bolt to the arm, and on it went twice more before falling to his knees only feet from Roose (who didn't move so much as a muscle), men flank Greatjon but before he's disarmed he quickly stabs a man in the gut-then bites half the ear off another before being dragged off, howling in a drunken rage that he'll kill every last one of them.. Would've been even more impactful if D&D didn't leave out literally like 90% of all the characters from the book(s), we had literally two or three whole characters (not including Greywind) the audience knew and liked that got killed there 🤷 Imagine if they fleshed them out and we got to know them, and saw people like Ser Wendel Manderly take a crossbow bolt through his mouth, or Dacey Mormont being hacked to bits by an axe, or Ser Waynald Westerling drowning to try and free Greywind, or Robin Flint being stabbed to death by multiple Frey's...

I’ve been rereading the series and it’s straight up shocking to me that someone could come out of Catelyn’s chapters in Clash of Kings without at least some sympathy for her. I straight up shed a few tears by her last chapter; she’s spent the whole book on a futile quest to stop two brothers with irreconcilable differences from killing each other. Her son is at war, far far away and she can’t even send him letters, her daughters are held hostage by her worst enemy, one of them likely dead, her father is dying upstairs, and all she has of Ned are his bones. Then, while the rest of Riverrun is celebrating in some other hall, she sits alone with the news her two youngest have been tarred and hanged by the traitor your son once thought a brother. You are near alone, and feel like the worst mother in the world at that moment, woefully incapable of helping any of your children. You go talk to your dying father, about a childhood memory with your sister, who’s also far away and more a stranger than ever. He will not hear, and sometimes you feel like the only person who remembers your father isn’t dead yet. You can’t save him, just as you can’t save Bran, or Rickon, or Ned or Renly or Arya or Edmure or Rob or Lysa. So what do you do? What do you do?

Ty for this correct opinion. it's so strange to me (not strange, obvious) how in every single tv drama the female leads are afforded less nuance than the male leads and are often deeply hated by a section of the fandom. In thrones, Sansa and cat get it the worst of it imo. Cat's not perfect and, as many comments point out, her and ned's flaws are quite literally the death of them. Ned's naive dedication to honor and cat's stubborn dedication to her family. Best quality and fatal flaw. They are both double-edged swords. That's what makes both of them such damn good characters.

Sansa gets so much stick for being frosty to Dany when she arrives at Winterfell, but when Jon does it... Dany is the exception that proves the rule that the main female characters are hated for things that would be overlooked. Probably as she loved Jon, rather than resented his existence (Cat), dissented against his rule (Sansa), took his boss kill away from (Arya), or mostly ignored him as they barely interacted (Cersei).

My counter argument is that by painting everyone who doesn’t like catlyn as a women hating idiot who doesn’t understand nuance is probably the reason why they get so angry. My personal judgment of catlyn and subsequent dislike of her isn’t based on any women hating knee jerk reaction it’s based on my own understanding, weighing, and perineal beliefs that lead me to say “I don’t like catlyn stark” That is kinda the heart of it, I can’t have an honest or productive conversation about her without ten people calling me sexist. Martin wrote a nuanced character character and by nuanced I mean people have good reason to both like and dislike her not just a pretty little descriptor to say she makes mistakes sometimes
@McCallaFilms3 жыл бұрын
I think there is some truth to what you are saying. Though I don't think either Sansa or Catelyn have less nuance than say, Jon or Robb. I often wondered why people holds so much animosity toards these two characters (Catelyn and Sansa). I think they are both well written characters, and their journey's makes perfect sense (overall). I don't believe that this is a sexist thing, in which male characters are more valued than female characters (by writters or audience). One could easily also argue that Daenerys and Arya are perhaps the shows to most well praised, and popular characters. I think it's more of a question of character-types, in which some types just seems to resonate more with the audience. Both Daenerys and Arya are sort of bad-ass fighters, and also outcasts. They both go against the grain and portrays as characters who had to fight for the things they have. On the other hand, Sansa and Catelyn are not fighters. Not in the traditional sense anyway. They are both not very independent and seems to rely on the people around them for help. Obviously, this is a simplification. I actually think they are more complex characters than both Daenerys and Arya. But still, the point is, that character-types simply vary in popularity, and the likes of Daenerys and Arya have always been in high demand.

Catelyn is a good breakdown of the "women are wiser" trope. She is written as a wise and loving woman who does the best she can to protect her family. The subversion is that she isn't as wise as she seems and she makes some pretty bad decisions while she's trying to fulfill the same trope. A trope D&D use pretty horribly in the later seasons with Sansa, Arya and any other women character. George knows that women are flawed, after the the show ran out of books, they stopped being characters and became funnels for yas queen girl power scenes

It's less that they don't see women as flawed and more that they don't get the theming. Catelyn is made less important and her role as the political advisor of House Stark is de-emphasized (for example, in the books, she initially pushes Ned to accept being Hand of the King because she knows how much trouble a refusal would bring, and only changes her mind when Bran's accident sends her into a horrible depressive episode and she goes a bit mad with worry, while in the show, Ned is the one who knows he has to accept the position and she becomes The Hero's Wife, wondering why he has to go off and do Hero Things instead of staying home with her and the kids.) Arya and Brienne now resent women who do conventionally girly things. Talisa talks disparagingly about how she wouldn't grow up to plan balls and host dinner parties, when those have actually been _incredibly_ important parts of diplomacy and politics for quite some time and she honestly could have done more good staying in Volantis and using that role to influence their society. The show's conception of what makes for a strong female character is narrower than the books', and it gets even narrower as time goes on. Arya gradually losing her identity in her pursuit of revenge isn't a tragedy, it's awesome, because it means she gets to be a cool shapeshifting assassin. Sansa is glad she was assaulted and traumatised because it taught her that trying to be kind is for idiots and she should brutally murder her enemies. "Yas, queen" moments are the only ways D&D can conceptualise female strength, and they're very dismissive of all other kinds of strength shown by the female characters.

Catelyn is the best female character George RR. Martin has ever written, and I stand by that notion to this very day. She was under no obligation to either care for nor love a child that was not hers and per as her own husband pretended he was, a reminder of his infidelity. Still, unlike Cersei who's answer to bastards is to kill them all, Catelyn allowed Jon to live in her home and be raised by his step-brothers and sisters. She is flawed, she makes a ton of terrible mistakes but in all honesty, who the f*** in this series HASN'T made a terrible mistake? She still loves her husband, her children, and actively fought for their well being and her last chapter during the Red Wedding was heart breaking and Michelle Fairley's performance as her in The Rains of Castamere was phenomenal.

Thank you very much for this video. It always irked me how fans hated Catelyn with such a passion and yet proceeded to make excuses for Much more evil characters. She is a tragic character and not the simplistic bitch people make her out to be. Her chapters in the books are so rich in details and in-story analysis. Because that's how perceptive Catelyn is. People just find it easy to call her a bitch because they have the advantage of hindsight. They have the advantage of reading POV chapters of Jon and Tyrion etc. Catelyn doesn't have that advantage. Catelyn is judged by her haters under the rosy shades of 21st century moral compass.

Also Cat hated Jon because she's a dynast, like almost everyone in the show. She's worried that Jon is going to try and undermine the position of her children as heirs to Winterfell and the North. Here's the explanation for the catspaw & daggar: LF manipulated Joffrey through a proxy. This proxy (probably Tyrek Lannister who 'magically' disappeared during the riot in ACoK) talked Joffrey into sending an assassin to kill Bran (Joffrey somehow thought it would make Robert proud of him). Joffrey is a dumbass who thought that an assassin sent by the King, should wield a weapon worthy of a King, & gave the catspaw the daggar. Things didn't go as LF planned, but the outcome still achieved his goal.
@wackyswacky13743 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing up straight facts.
@christinestreeter8566 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it was as complex as that. I think Joffrey heard his mom discussing it and then heard Robert discussing it (I’m pretty sure Jamie even remembers this in one of his chapters) and Joffrey who was largely ignored by Robert in an effort to please him went and got the dagger from Roberts stuff and gave it to some guy to kill Bran. It wasn’t Tyrion, Jamie or Cersei so that leaves Joffrey. I don’t know how Petyr could have been involved, he wasn’t there and would have no way of influencing Joffrey. Jamie wasn’t supposed to be there he was horny and annoyed with not being able to spend time with Cersei decided to not to go on the hunt and snuck away with Cersei for some afternoon delight. Petyr would have had to have some advance knowledge that Jamie and Cersei would be banging and Bran would see them resulting in his injury. I think Joffrey just wanted to please Robert I don’t think he needed any influencing to do it.

One thing I would like to point out is that Book's Catelyn and Cersei are two faces of the same coin!
