Games Done Quick (to ban everyone)

Games Done Quick has grown immensely throughout the years and has become the most well known event for speedrunners. However, the staff and management of GDQ has become more and more strict over time as well, banning many players for unknown or completely absurd reasons. Most recently, ADGQ 2018 has gone a step further with a heavily censored, sub only mode chat on the twitch stream, which gets well over a hundred thousand live viewers. What's been going on and why have these extreme measure been put into place? I dug deep to find answers.

Then, you draw two cards, and you wind up with a net +1. You used one card, and gained two. It's a concept referred to as 'card advantage', and can give you a broad strokes idea of how economical or wasteful your plays are.

To be honest, I think that was likely a mistake by GDQ staff themselves since anyone with a functioning brain would know overhead always exists even in a charitable space. With that said, a woefully low amount of PCF's money goes towards fighting cancer, considering a little over 21% of their total expenses goes towards the aforementioned research (the lion's share goes towards education and awareness, which I've explained in another comment on this video as being less effective than research funding and I really do not want to talk about what community outreach could be). Also, what constitutes as an act of effectively fighting cancer depends on audience perception. Prevention certainly is one step towards dealing with cancer but I have to imagine treating people who have a more advanced stage of cancer is also important and would technically be a more significant solution to the problem. In fact, it seems like many donors are under the impression PCF is some sort of blanket cancer charity when they're most definitely not (Cancer Research Institute is superior by a mile) - even the guy who made this video proves it with his closing statement.

Second: Why even use it? The point of Uno is get rid of all your cards, how does drawing 2 cards help you win? i have a IRL friend from elementary school that i dont talk to much, but we played a couple games of rocket league a while ago and mentioned he got into GDQ to run some obscure game and i was super hyped about it, except he never got to run it. I heard from another mutual friend that he had been banned "because he was a Christian". I have no way to validate the truth of this since i don't really have any way to contact that guy, i recently moved and hes not on steam anymore, but i can say he is one of the sweetest least problematic dudes ive ever met. He definitely is a Christian lad through and through but i dont see how GDQ would have found out about that or what that conversation looked like. with that being said, this video made that claim seem much more plausible than i initially had thought. I have no doubt that GDQ is gatekept and its sort of a "you have to know someone" type of situation to get in, unless you already have a massive following. I really like a lot of aspects of GDQ but theres this really bizarre underbelly of the speedrunning community that reflects some of the worst aspects of humanity and i find a lot of the way they handle things to be really distasteful on the management side. EDIT: also i got perma banned several years ago during a Emote only mode part of the stream, which still today i find completely insane. I got it back this year thanks to the ability to dispute bans

hey, i was on the couch for the infamous Ape Escape 2 run from AGDQ 2018, you can even see a clip of me on the right being given a maga hat (then immediately taking it off) at 4:55. the run was really fun and im glad ion got to show it off again but the aftermath of that run was absolutely ridiculous. i was fortunate enough to get out of the stream room before anything went down and i avoided any trouble but from talking to PvtCb and cyber in person at the event what they went through was some real bullshit. im glad you got their sides of the story here, seeing sites like kotaku spread misinformation is always frustrating for our small community because theres often very little we can do to set the record straight. i hope this video reaches more people, thank you for doing this.
