Larry Gostin is a global leader in the are of global health law and human rights. In this video Greg Martin talks to Larry about his book and also asks him to give advice to young people starting out in the global health field.
Larry Gostin's book deals with human rights, social equity, justice and international law, all in the context of global public health. Here is a link to a site that you can purchase the book: astore.amazon.com/globheal-20?...
Here is a link to the article that Larry talked about during the interview: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10...
Global health (and public health) is truly multidisciplinary and leans on epidemiology, health economics, health policy, statistics, ethics, demography.... the list goes on and on. This KZbin channel is here to provide you with some teaching and information on these topics. I've also posted some videos on how to find work in the global health space and how to raise money or get a grant for your projects.
Please feel free to leave comments and questions - I'll respond to all of them (we'll, I'll try to at least). Feel free to make suggestions as to future content for the channel.

Dr. Martin: Thank you for introducing Dr. Gostin's scholarship and tome via this medium. I did not know of him. Having studied International Law too, I was delighted to hear of his work in this area, as well as his comments re: encouraging others to explore this route in order to discover their passion(s) in G.H. Looking forward your next posts. Happy Day as well.

Hi Greg!it is great to see Larry Gostin on your channel! I had the opportunity of attending his book presentation a few weeks ago at UCL but could not stay very long for the Q&A and just loved to see that you framed some of the questions that I did not have a chance to ask him myself. His book has come out at the perfect time for me as i'm doing my dissertation on the human right to health as entrenched in international law!

Hi Vania de la Fuente Núñez - yes, Larry is a really inspirational personality. Glad to hear that you're focussed on human rights and international law (not an easy subject). Once you're dissertation is done, you might want to consider publishing in Globalization and Health (let me know). Greg

Great! Will let you know. Also, it'd be great to discuss it with you when I start getting really into it (finishing up classes now). It's always good to explain these things to someone else to be kept on track and I would love to get your feedback on it as well :). Vânia

That was a great video- I have a number of friends practicing law and interested in international law and human rights and I emailed this to them (as well as your justice, equality, and global health video!)- this is the kind of video they need exposure to, the kind that will help motivate them to keep on the path!

This is a very informative video. Greg Martin you have done it again. I look forward to reading Larry's book. I plan on pursuing a career in neuroscience while wanting to minor in international relations and law.

I'm a late viewer, but I just wanted to say thanks to you and Prof. Gostin for this video. When it comes to enforcing bilateral treaties in commerce, trade, etc., investors and countries can always go to international courts/tribunals to get their cases heard (e.g ICC). Something similar could happen for global health, but it would require great cooperation among countries. Unfortunately, a lot of people have lately been very critical of BITs (e.g. TIPP) so I wonder how people would react on international treaties regarding global health.

Thanks for the insightful comment Paula! We've seen great success with the FCTC and IHR (so hopefully there will be more in the pipeline). In an ideal world - what would you like to see in terms of global health treaties etc.?

Hello Greg! In an ideal world I would like to see a move of people's views on health to be more focused on seeing health as a universal right vs. a privilege. Unfortunately, many countries that are low-income and high-income see health as a "privilege" (e.g. U.S.). I believe once countries can make their own health care reforms, this can help pave the way for effective int'l health law. I learned through my internship with the Global Financing Facility that countries provided with funds have to include health reform measures in their investment cases and to qualify for the WB's Country Partnership Framework. So, in a way this incentives countries to see health as another development goal instead of an impediment for progress.
