"will coronavirus continue to lead to race cancellations?" The virus will not, the panic associated with it highly likely will. Massmedia buzzes about total cases and does not inform us that number of active cases is on decline since mid February, and number of recovery to total and even new cases is rising. That does not look like pandemic. Seasonal flu appears more deadly, although it's not so novel and therefore not buzz worthy.

I am 74 and have done an average of 12 000 km each since retiring 10 years ago. My bike has given meaning to life in retirement. I bike all over Canada, my home, USA and Europe each year. I am in Florida right now racking up 4 000 km over the winter.

Speaking of David LLoyd and other inspiring retired cyclists... I used to race 16-18 years ago when I was 16-18. On my trainings I sometimes did an uphill training up to Carena, Ticino, Switzerland. www.salite.ch/12030.asp?mappa= It's nothing huge, 10.5 km uphill, 6.8% average, but still. After having encountered a guy a few times, one time I spoke to him. It turned out it was a retired guy, who took up cycling late in his life. He told me that he had been cycling up that same ascent EVERY SINGLE DAY for I don't remember how many years. With snow, sun, rain, wind. On an eighties' mountainbike. When I left him (I was quicker), I felt almost ashamed letting him back :) I very much respect those people.

What’s scary about the corona virus is as you said the unknown. Because it’s in such an early stage for the infection/death rates it’s quite scary as it could still evolve without us being able to do much about it. So the deadliness isn’t really what exists right now, but what it could do in the future.

A brilliant, vintage episode. I'm so glad that GCN is being responsible (not normally a GCN priority) about this bloody virus thing. It WILL affect cycling in a big way and even us lesser lights will have to change plans for the season. Speaking personally, I meet up every year with a group of "mature" ex-racing people on Mallorca for a "training camp." I messaged our venerable leader (scary ex-pro) to ask his advice. He answered " have you tried self-isolation?" I replied, "don't be so disgusting!) And Dave Lloyd? I was in a break with him once, the only non-Liverpool Kirkby/Mercury mafia member of the escapees and I stopped working. He spoke to me quite sharply.........

I live in Northern Italy and the situation isn't that bad for a 17 year old such as myself. However Schools are closed, events are being cancelled left right and centre plus general confusion is creating a feeling of panic. It's not certain that Milano Sanremo and Strade Bianche are getting cancelled because RCS has asked the UCI for another race date. The big issue with the virus is that it's putting a lot of pressure on health facilities that don't have the resources to handle the outbreak of the virus. Young and healthy people almost certainly won't be heavily affected by the disease. However a significant amount of elderly and ill people will require intensive care and Italy does not have a sufficient amount of places in the intensive care departments. I hope this information gives you a better insight to what's actually happening here

It seems that everything is being cancelled out of an abundance of caution rather than a real threat. Lots of major events have been shut down including the Geneva Motor Show!
@anthonygarvey14 жыл бұрын
Bar & Pedal I take your point, but there is a real potential that even one person attending a very large show like this could infect hundreds of people who might then go on to infect many more. 660,000 people attended the show in 2018, over 10 days. The reason for cancelling events with more than 1,000 people is based on the chance of one of those 1,000 having the virus. In reality, 1 in 100,000 might be more realistic* but could still mean 7 people at the event have the virus to potentially spread. Adding to that, there will be travellers from all over the world each with different prevalence of the virus (number of carriers per 1,000 people) so it could be higher. And finally, infected individuals return home to other countries to start off their own outbreaks. Efforts so far have prevented exponential spread of the virus, so we don’t see the full effect and then question why did we bother!! Outside of the cycling start and finishing areas, crowd densities wouldn’t get above 1,000 people per football pitch area, so hopefully races will continue if organisers are clever? Let’s hope! Actually, 1 in a million currently, but that could change very quickly.
