According to Strava, he has ridden 11865 km in 2023, spending 314 hours in the saddle. Let's assume for a moment that all his rides were recorded, and that his average cadence across all rides is, say, 80 rpm (assuming some freewheeling is involved). This means he has performed 314x60x80=1695600 crank revolutions, earning almost 4 euros per crank revolution.

It all makes sense to me. Regardless of the difficulty of the sport of love of the person, it comes down to - how much money do they bring into the sport ( or the sport brings in itself)? Sports like Basketball, both Football sports, Baseball, all try to maximize profit through TV, sponsors and retail. Cycling (similar to Triathlon) can't seem to make that connection. Where can I get a Tadej UAE jersey? Who can even find a Colnago to buy (definitely not in the US)? AND... Many of the team sponsors have little to do with cycling, so there is a big loss there - ( Visma is a business software) Yes it brings in a good chunk of money for contracts but it restricts the bigger potential for contributions to the sport.

There isn't just a discrepancy amongst the world's top athletes based on salary, but also, frankly, bang for buck/danger money/effort. Ronaldo vs Pog? 90mins jogging around a pitch falling over, wailing, winking, missing every free kick he insists on taking, versus 6hrs in the saddle, in all weathers, burning 8000 cals, descents at up to 120kmh, idiot spectators, idiot motorbikes, and what's more, repeating it each and every day for three long weeks. Night and day difference in bang-for-buck. $220m/yr for Ronaldo is a joke. And don't get me started on the golfers.

Like I said, I'm not a football fan, but I admit that football (and other sports) are a bigger industry than cycling. Maybe if people start paying to be on the side of the road to see a bike race, like people pay to get in stadiums, cyclists can earn more 😅

these salaries are result of a cost/revenue analysis of the sponsors, how the investment pays off in brand value. Somehow that must pay off for these mentioned top tens of other sports as well. But obvious it gets with Roglic as brand ambassador for an otherwise unknown cooker brand with the unique feature of an air extract next to the flame, playing in ads the chef cooking healthy cyclist food. It is just overwhelmingly convincing, for sure lifting up the brand, easily worth the investment and at least on the same level as Peter Sagan doing the same a couple of years ago. Only nerds have been familiar with the brands decorating Pogi's equipment - now they are mainstream. A bit difficult it gets with his main sponsor who is really not the Pogacar among nations... But luck for us, the consumers, that the industry and these sponsors bank on the mentioned top earners, that all make contemporary cycling such fascinating, but in particular these two easy going Sloweniens. Would be interesting, whether their inspirational ease really is their nature or result of some brilliant coaching. Compare that to the times of "angry" protagonists as Armstrong... Next to watch is what RedBull will do with Roglic, Ski-Jumper, frequent crasher, always recoverer... How they make him wings... Huge potential.
