Manon headed to Denmark in an attempt to qualify for the UCI Gravel World Championships, but fighting illness and horrific weather, can she overcome adversity and achieve her goal? Real challenges are the one that you're not really sure you can complete. Where failure is not only a real possibility but possibly even probable. Many of us shy away from these. So many of the GCN "challenges" are difficult and always entertaining but the outcome is usually never in doubt. This was an inspirational video. I know Manon is broken and it hurts to see but all cyclist must take an important message from this video - Your body and mind does have boundaries, sometimes you can push them and sometimes you need to respect those boundaries and not kill yourself for any kind of goal, you and your health is the most important thing and it's not embarrassing to give up sometimes. In last few years on the internet we've seen many motivational videos about not giving up and not failing but actually it's quite normal it happens sometimes in life, you move on and try again some other time. It's ok to give up.

Mega effort, Manon. You may not like quitting but in situations where your body, health and psyche are on the line, it takes courage to call it a day. Reminds me of the time Simone Biles pulled out of her remaining events in the Olympics because she knew she wasn't in top form and that if she simply "powered through" like the purists argued, she was risking serious injury. There's a line between healthy determination and plain obstinacy (ie. finishing just so you can say you did even if it destroyed you to do so) and you wisely exercised courageous restraint here.

As a coach of a different sport, swimming, it is all too often underestimated the effect that it can have on less able athletes to witness that those with an abundance of talent can still struggle. Manon was really unlucky to fall ill the night before. I am sure a number of us have been there in the lead-up to an event. It is mentally very hard to admit defeat and accept that your health is more important than reaching the finish line. But doing so is essential for a quick recovery. You should be proud of your effort under the circumstances, and regroup, and try again next year.

Amazing effort, if you're not feeling well there's nothing you can do. Turning up and still doing that distance when you're under par.....just incredible. TY so much for sharing it ... for me, sports of any kind are microcosms of our lives ... in the end, it's not about coming first, not about getting a PB (although both are awesome when/if they occur) it's about having the courage of give things a try, squeeze our limits, be smart enough to know when to push and when to decide enough is enough .. rest for another day. Great video for me today. I rode an overnight 150-mile mix-surface race over the weekend (Last Call Challenge by Utepils Cycling in Minneapolis). The forecast showed occasional sprinkles and a low temp of 55F/12C, what we got was no-stop rain and temps that fell to 45F/7C. I had high hopes for a fast ride, I love night riding, the course was perfect for me (like Manon, I was excited for a flat course) and I like cool weather. After the neutral rollout, I was third on the road for many miles, then I picked up the lead group of two riders at mile 30 and was happy with the company and some help taking pulls. But it was clear my riding partners were really suffering the cold, and there are nearly no places to stop to warm up after midnight. At mile 60 we found an open gas station and one of our group could not stop shivering, I was cold too nothing like him. After over an hour at the gas station we added every layer we had available (including plastic bags from the gas station for shoe liners), and we were drinking and eating anything hot we could find, we decided to head straight back to the finish (we talked about call for a ride, but only one of us had an option for a pick up and they couldn't handle all of us). Because I bike to the start (8 miles from my house), I turned off the group at mile 90 and rode solo home. I'm SO happy we made the decision to pull the plug and get back as quick as possible, being out on the roads in those conditions for another 3-4 hours would have been extremely challenging! I still completed 125 miles total, starting from my house at 9:00 pm, and getting home around 7:30 am. I feel both disappointed I didn't finish the course, but also very successful for pushing through 125 miles of the toughest conditions. I'm still trying to find out if anybody finished the whole course, it appears no one did.

Great effort and much gratitude for posting the video. Having had similar race experiences, I now feel we’ve bonded through shared trauma even though we’re physically half a world apart. Taking the wrong turn in a race … UGH! Been there; done that. Such a motivation killer! Thank you, Manon! Keep up the great work at GCN.
