A flat, firm saddle like a Selle Royal Seta (not expensive) or equivalent, that is appropriately sized to provide correct support to your particular sit-bones. This effectively elevates the perineum out of the fray. Also, a 3-ish degrees nose-down attitude of the saddle keeps the saddle nose a little bit lower and again, out of the equation. Once I discovered this not so obvious solution, all discomfort became a thing of the past. Beyond this, correct crank length is another significant aspect of this situation. A crank that is too long causes over extension of the knee and consequently, exaggerated movement of the hips. I'm 5'10" (178cm) and 170mm cranks are vastly more comfortable for me than the typical 172.5 or 175 that come as standard fitment on frames recommended for my stature.

Dudes need to get serious and get over any hangups about 'checking down there'. I lost a cousin just over a year ago, at 53 to IHD, a condition that killed his father at 47..and our fathers are twins, I just turned 51. Hello..there's my wakeup call. Whilst I was getting a heart check, the doc says I best get 'the other check'. So that took care of a dilemma (in my own mind) of a digit in the widget, or do I just wing it and hope for the best. Knowing is better than wondering. Let's stop dying for a sake of a little bit of self imposed pride.

Jay Lumbago did u ever fix the numbness problem?

Yes. I went from a Fizik Antares which came with my new bike to a Specialized Power which has a big cut out. That solved the problem. But I used to have pressure and a little numbness before on all of my bikes. What was helping there was a small adjustment in the saddle position, maybe lower the saddle a bit or tilt down the nose slightly and of course use every possibility to pedal out of the saddle, for example accelerating after a narrow corner or passing over bridge.

I've noticed that this happens over long distances, long duration with a single posture. Easiest way out, tilt the seat downwards in front by a bit and it should ease the pressure down there. For MTBs and hybrid cycles it shouldn't be a problem based on their cushioning and shock absorbers.

I have no problems with my Sunlite C9 seat,its the wider type thats made for cruisers and such however I do like it on my mtb for commutes. Its nice because its comfy in any position even while sprinting,I couldn't do that with those skinny bike seats.

Have u tried ISM ADAMO - it's so good i've got three for all my bikes. I've also got pro stealth and Power specialized. ISM adamo is stil the most comfortable on the drops - it's as comfortable as sitting on the couch. Seriously comfortable.

Big Lampar Thanks - I’ve been thinking about a split nose saddle. I’m currently enjoying a Specialized Power saddle but I have to stand or adjust my position from time to time. I notice it’s very comfortable on a long climb and when I’m forward on it.

believe it or not, I have the least problems with this when I am wearing minimally padded shorts in concert with the specialized taupe saddle.

We need to put an end to men "dying of embarrassment" - I would urge anyone to go and have a check up if they haven't done it recently. It's something I tell all my older cycling customers who are returning to cycling after years of inactivity.

As I’m now in my fifties and I’ve had a PSA test and need to have some further checks. I’ve been asked not to cycle for a week so that it doesn’t skew the new test results. I have no symptoms but it’s good to get checked and so should you too, it’s a simple blood test, so do it 💥💪

I’m an older guy, 76, keen cyclist, I had embarassing and painful urination problems for thirty years or so, a routine medical showed a worrying PSA level, an MRI showed lesions on the prostate, a painful biopsy showed no cancer. After a year without cycling due to the covid social distancing my urination is back to normal, I sleep eight hours without getting up to go to the toilet. I’m back to cycling now so hopefully with a year of rest and a better saddle it won’t come back.

do have suggestion about saddle?
@glennet9613 Жыл бұрын
I changed to the Brooks B17 which I find excellent. My wife uses the lady’s B65 and it is the first saddle that she has never complained about. You can them pre-softened to save the breaking in period. I see my post was two years ago and glad to say the problems have not returned and we have been cycling just about every day.

I had the same problem with a PSA very, very high, biopsie, MRI, etc. Five years ago I had a cycling accident which took me off the bike for that long. My PSA went down to normal this year. I’m starting again to ride my bike and Hope everything will stay normal.
@glennet9613 Жыл бұрын
@@Badtimes Mine is still normal so far despite a lot of cycling recently - I think changing to a Brooks saddle may have helped. But PSA is only an indicator, not harmful in itself, so if it increases I wont do anything unless it is really extreme.

Thanks Si for a great presentation on a subject that pretty much all men are or should be concerned about. As we get past that all encompassing 50 mark it's really vital to have a check up once every couple of years to every year as time marches on. Research and treatment for prostate cancer has improved by leaps and bounds in the last 30 years and although it led to our father's passing, it's good to know that his sons (i.e. my brothers and I) don't have to suffer the same fate. I've experienced the numbness in the 'undercarriage' while riding my bike on rollers and solved it with a few layers of chamois like soft cloth between me and the saddle. Well done with an important subject!

I'm 53, went to the doctor about my aching back (which turned out to be due to 2 compressed discs) but as a precaution had my prostate checked then scanned. When they saw the results which were ok they noticed a lump on a kidney which turned out to be cancer, I've had the tumour removed and things look good. I hate to think of the consequences if I hadn't had the checks done. I share this info to help others and the checks are nothing to be scared of.

He makes a great point about PSA. While getting the test is a personal choice, you should read the US Preventative Service Task Force guidelines first, as they do not recommend screening for prostate cancer.

I've had the numbness to the point that I was afraid of drops of pee, and not knowing if I was possibly leaking. Other than saddles, you can try different angles, standing up occasionally, and rest stops. Of course age is a factor as well. I am 55, so I am probably more likely than a 20 year old to run into this issue on a long ride.

Been ridding diamond frames non stop for 50 years + and later with very good seats and then started riding recumbents (and noseless seat for my fold up upright that I use occasionally). Not only does ridding recumbents help the issues discussed but lots of others like sore neck, hands, shoulders. You do a long ride and you are just tired no sore or numb bits anywhere.......
@LUCYDIAMONDBOXER16 жыл бұрын
Cycling bad for men's health, no. I'm an Ironman and have just bought a saddle with a central cut out for that reason, the numbness. The pressure on the perineum was the cause. The saddle has worked a treat.
@brazilianpianist6 жыл бұрын
SAF1981 could you let us know the exact model of your new saddle. I’m trying my 5th one, paid a professional fit, all that. It has a cut in the middle... but no luck so far
@LUCYDIAMONDBOXER16 жыл бұрын
Marcelo Thys I have this saddle The Selle Italia SLR Titanium Rail Saddle superflow. It is pricy but well reviewed and very comfortable. Has eliminated all soreness and numbness. I think Evans Cycles are the cheapest for it at the minute. You also don't have to have titanium rails etc so other models are cheaper
@maxw52296 жыл бұрын
@@brazilianpianist In a good Bike Shop you should ne able to borrow some testsaddles and take a few rides before deciding which is best for you. Everyone is unique so there is no perfect saddle for everyone it depends on the width of your seatbones, how 'racey' your Position is on the bike, what framegeometry, your weight, your feel and of course - if you have a big or small ass :) good luck with finding a proper saddle

Im an IM Triathlete and had the same thing. I switched to an Adamo Breakaway (now called Adamo PL 1.0 ) on my Tri bike Had it for few years now and not experienced the same numbness. 2 Long course races with it plus all the training. So I recommend at least trying it to see if it can help
@brazilianpianist6 жыл бұрын
Thanks everyone for the input. Yes, I’ve done my fit on Cycle Neron, the fitter is very knowledgeable and is working hard to get it right. They allow me to test the saddles for a while, I’m now on my 5th one, which looks the most promising one. A bit uncomfortable but no numbness in shorter rides. I’m yet to test on more aggressive rides, which usually is what triggers it. The saddle is the Pro Saddle Stealth. I’m gonna look into the pro Itália one you mentioned to compare.
