Prepping for and applying the gloss coat to a surfboard. I sanded the pin lines with 150 grit sandpaper and then cleaned the board with acetone. I applied the gloss coat using a 3” chip brush with polyester gloss resin and taped off the rails with Indasa masking tape. My signature was written with a Posca Pen. Surfboard dimensions are 6' x 20.5 x 2.5. I've only glassed a handful of boards and am not an expert but this glassing process works for me.

Can you show me what kind of resin you used 1. Glasing 2. Hot coat 3. Gloss coat Thank you so much
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
I used polyester resin. Laminating resin for the fiberglass, sanding resin for hot coat and then gloss resin for gloss coat. All can be found on this website using my affiliate link: greenlightsurfsupply.com/tbendheim

Thx Tanner for the great videos. Is it possible to regloss a old surfboard to ensure its durability and restore the "shinyness" :). If yes what would you use for a epoxy board. Cheers!
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
It’s possible but it’s a lot of work and a lot of sanding. I haven’t worked with epoxy, only polyester resin. Here is a video to help inspire you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnuTdoeGnLOeo9U

Thanks for making these videos! would you say its bad to gloss in 90 degree weather? i only currently can work in a room in the garage that gets hot. Would it be best to add less hardener or just wait for a cooler time of the day to do it?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
It’s been around 85 degrees in my shaping bay lately so I can relate. Yes with hotter temperatures the resin will cure faster so using a little less hardener is probably your best bet to compensate. Good luck!

Hey man I’ve watched all your videos more than once, it’s helpful. I did my first gloss yesterday and have sanded it with 400-600-800 and #2 polish and it’s still hazy. What’s the trick?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I wet sand with the grits you mentioned but you should go up to 1,000 or higher grit. Then I use compounding liquid and then polishing liquid with a polishing pad. I’ll be posting my polishing video by next Friday. Here is a link that might help if you scroll to the bottom: greenlightsurfsupply.com/pages/greenlight-surfboard-building-guide-page-4

Hey! I'm making my first board in a couple of weeks but I'm a bit confused with the resin mixing ratios. I've seen the greenlight chart on how much resin you should use but it's measured on fluid ounces, in this series of videos you weight the resin and the hardener. How do you measure by weight instead of volume? Btw, beautiful board and awesome skills dude.
@MrSurfThis
@MrSurfThis 4 жыл бұрын
I think 1 fluid ounce is 30 grams, but it may depend on the liquid. So to be sure, try to measure 1 fluid ounce of resin on the scale and from there is just simple math
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. I just started using the scale and used to do it with measuring cups so it can be done either way. I am using the scale to weigh the resin in oz and then I have a small measuring cup for the catalyst to measure in cc so I don’t use the scale for the hardener, just the resin. I’m pretty sure the green light chart shows both in oz and cc. Hope that helps, good luck! 🤙

Hey, nice video again. How much resin do you need for this? How do you know the proportions? Thanks again!
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I used 8oz of gloss resin per side. I write down how much I’ve used on each board to keep track and help me figure out how much to use on future boards. If your unsure, it’s always safer to prepare too much or at least have a second batch ready to go in case you run out.

Did you add styrene to the gloss coat? and is the rule of thumb 1 oz per foot?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
No I purchased gloss resin that is ready to use. You could add styrene to polyester resin with wax solution or just add it to sanding resin to thin it out and turn it into your gloss coat. I used 8oz of gloss resin on this 6ft board but had a little extra left over.

Hey , i would know if using the glass coat is necessary knowing that epoxy is waterproof
@dave1082
@dave1082 9 ай бұрын
he isn''t using epoxy, but if there are no pinholes in the finish, you don't "need" a gloss. acrylic floor finish is an alternative to glossing resin.

acetone is just as toxic as anything else, gloves:)! Good work, boards look great. Didn't show how you cut your tape lines....Vulcan surf tool??
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I probably should use gloves. I just use sandpaper and a razor blade to scrape down the tape line.
