I generally recommend starting with an 8% serum. On every other night for one week, test it in a quarter-sized area in front of one of your ears. If there's no irritation, then it can be used on the entire face on alternate nights for another week. If no irritation again, then can be introduced on nightly basis. When starting glycolic products, if you have some tingling for 10 or 20 seconds, which then stops, that's usually ok. If you have a burning senstation it should be rinsed off with water.

With the regime you suggested for me through your nurse, Isabel, I am already seeing very good results. Your glycolic serum is one spoke of that wheel, making my skin appear fresh and new. I also read your book which educated me on the 'why' of your 4 step system. So far, so good.

I recommend beginning with a starter-strength product of around 8% that has been pH-adjusted and buffered so that it is gentle yet effective. Then you can slowly work your way up over a matter of months.

I recommend stopping the Retin-A for 3 to 4 days before starting a 10% glycolic product, and taking a week or two to become acclimated to the glycolic by using it only on alternating days before using it daily. As you know, I usually prefer glycolics to retinoids because they are more effective, easier to use, and rarely cause irritation.

Yes, you can use both a glycolic acid and a vitamin c serum at the same time. I recommend using both products at night. Hi I'm so grateful for your videos! I know it's been 5 years since u did these, but I'm watching every one. I'm on a very tight budget and I have zero credit lol. "Which I'm working on" I pay for Botox outta my own pocket cash. So I can't really afford to do anything else as far as with a dr. I'm trying to do what ever I can. Could u recommend any products for under the eyes? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

I started using an 8% home night cream about 8 months ago and am so sad I didn't start years sooner! It's amazing... my skin condition and appearance improved SO MUCH! I was so impressed that recently bought a 10% cream for my body. I instantly noticed my skin felt softer and after a week I thought I noticed my Keratosis Pilaris was better, and now, after a month, I KNOW it is. Gold standard indeed Dr!!

You're absolutely right: glycerin is not the same as glycolic, and glycerin is a wonderful moisturizing ingredient. Many acids, on the other hand, do not dry out the skin and depending on the type and strength can have various effects from gentle exfoliation (such as glycolics) to actual chemical burns (such as TCA).
@dermtv12 жыл бұрын
You should look for a starter strength (~8%) glycolic product (you can increase strength over time) that is pH-adjusted and buffered for gentle yet effective exfoliation, and of course, that's appropriate for your skin type. For your skin type, it should be light and oil free, such as a serum. These features were the foundation when I created my BeautyRx products. Whether you choose a BeautyRx glycolic exfoliant or one from any other brand, just be sure that the product meets these criteria.

Effective glycolic exfoliation can always make existing redness in the skin more visible and does little to help remove the redness. If the redness is from irritation from the glycolic, then obviously the glycolic is making it worse, but if the redness is pre-existing and the glycolic removes upper layers of dulling, dead cells, that also makes the underlying redness more apparent so beware. Also, as a note, I don't recommend at home use of glycolic products greater than 20%.

Yes, glycolic can do everything retinol does and more, especially because to get results from Retinol it needs to be converted into Retin A inside your cells and that conversion is variable and unpredictable. With glycolics, the strength and therefore anticipated results are determined by the percent of the product. As a note, using the Retinol will add little to the efficacy and make your results less predicable and could possible cause irritation with the glycolic.

I've never used "alpha hydrox" glycolic cream or lotion but have read that some people are happy with the results. There is an 8% concentration available for those with sensitive skin. It's generally recommended to do a patch skin test, and start out using the glycolic product every few days and then every other day until figuring out how your skin reacts to the ingredient(s). Please talk to your doctor before starting a skin care regimen though :)

I believe that exfoliation is a maintenance procedure just like brushing your teeth and flossing your gums, and should be continued for your entire life. There should be no unforeseen additive effects years later, provided you're not experiencing inflammation currently.

@hapipopo Glycolic acid does remain stable if properly buffered. Also, it does not react adversely to oxygen, but of course as with most products, if you leave a jar of it open indefinitely, it will dry up/evaporate (of course just opening a jar while using and then replacing the lid won't be an issue).

What do you recommend taking the strength of glycolic? If we are able to tolerate uptil 20% should we stop there? And when reached 20% should we continue usage after every two weeks the same strength in our routine or take a break of few months for glycolic peels maintainence?
@dermtv12 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Effective exfoliation is caused by the free (glycolic) acid in the product which in turn is determined by the total percent of glycolic and the pH. The higher the pH, the less amount of free acid. So, if a product has a relatively low percentage of glycolic (eg. 5%) and a relatively high pH (eg. 4%+) then there probably won't be sufficient free acid to accomplish effective exfoliation. For example, 5% glycolic at a pH of 4 is equivalent to 2% free acid. Not much...

I had a question. I am a man, and was wondering if I use a glycolic at night. Can I still use a sunscreen that has retinol included in it during the day? Meaning a non chem free sunscreen with Pro-Retinol A, a form of Vitamin A. Currently I am using a SPF 15 with pro-retinol during the day. So, is that sunscreen safe to use with a glycolic acid treatment that I use during the evening. which is in the form of lactic acid?

Question for the Doc. I want to incorporate both Glycolic Acid and Vitamin C Serum into my skin routine. My question is this: Can I use both simultaneously? If so how would I use them. No, glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, used to exfoliate the skin. Glycerin is a humectant that creates a protective barrier, thus it is often used for hydration purposes.

Doctor, i've been using a lotion that contains 10% AHA: 8% Glycolic acid and 2% Citric acid. Is the citric acid contributing to the exfoliation strength, or is it an antioxidant? I want to understand if the strength of my exfoliant is 8% or 10% ?! I would appreciate it a lot if you could solve this for me!

Usually, I recommend applying your glycolic acid product first and the following with the vitamin c serum (you can then apply your moisturizer after that). Just an fyi that some glycolic products may have an effective amount of glycolic among its ingredient list but the pH (potential of hydrogen) may not be low enough for exfoliation to take place.
@dermtv12 жыл бұрын
Your exfoliant is 8% because the citric does not add any meaningful, extra exfoliation compared to the efficacy of the glycolic. Calling the solution 10% AHA is correct because citric acid is an AHA. The citric acid makes a minimal contribution to exfoliation, is commonly used as a preservative, and I'm unaware of antioxidant properties.
