Hiram! The techs here at the Utah Transit Authority Special Services Division would like to thank you for your wonderful video. You described exactly the problem we was having with our coach. We tore down the valve body and found a stuck ball in our separator plate just like the one shown on your video. I am positive we will be using more of your 6L80E and 6L90E videos to work on our fleet of GM's.

@juicebox85495 жыл бұрын
@@rakohus same. Did you fix the problem?
@rakohus5 жыл бұрын
@@juicebox8549 YES. This totally fixed it and my transmission shifted better than ever after doing it. I did an entire writeup on what I did and you can find it by searching google for "6L80E - Reverse only, no forward sierra". Look for the user name Ralphis on a forum post at silveradosierra, should be one of the top results. Scroll down and you will see a start to finish explanation of how I did it. If you aren't experienced with messing with transmissions and sliding around on your back under a truck, be ready to set aside about 5-8 hours depending on the tools you have and ready to curse A LOT. All parts, which include the transmission fluid, it probably cost around $100. Multiple shops told me the transmission was totally shot and needed to be rebuilt/replaced for $3000-4000. You can pretty quickly do that math and decide if it's worth your time :)

Hiram, I have a question about the 4T65e trans. Performing an air check at 20 PSI, the 2nd clutch pack activated only on the first try. Every other attempt it has failed and presented a cross bleed into the lube feed channel. I placed some more trans gel on the two split rings on the driven sprocket support and re-tested with success. There seems to be a slight leak at the split seals. Is this normal or to be expected or do I have a problem needing further investigation. All seals are new BTW. Thanks for uploading another great vid!!

The weld on the 3/5/R-1/2/3/4 drum cracks on these units also around 100k miles. I've seen it on the MYC and MYD (6L80, 6L90) units. It most of the time it gives a delayed reverse engagement or no reverse hot. I've also seen late and slippery 1-2 shifts from this. That drum is available loaded w/ pistons and fibers and steels from GM on the MYC (6L80) units but is only available bare for the MYC (6L90).

Help! My boyfriend had been borrowing my 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, 6 cyl, and the next day I went to drive it and put it into gear, and it had no forward drives - only reverse. He will not tell me anything about what happened or how it had been driving. I was thinking it was in limp mode when he came home, although I have no way of telling. It has sit now for a year as I work from home and instead of fixing my truck, he purchased himself a car and we have been using that. I need my own wheels and want to get my truck going again. besides the typical things like fuel for getting a car going once it has sit for some time, I am wondering what should be the first things to do to get it going again. Can I get the old codes to show up if I can get it to start or are they gone since it has been without a battery for some time (he took the batter out for his car)? I just put a new battery in it. Hoping you can give me some ideas as to where I can steer a mechanic to start looking. Thanks in advance...

Awesome video!!! I'd love to see more videos like this one, using hydraulic oil schematics to aid in diagnosis. Also, I'd like to see an in depth tutorial on reading and interpreting hydraulic oil schematics, as well as how to use those schematics to identify what kind of fluid flows through which worm tracks on the case and valve body, that being line pressure, converter charge, EPC pressure, things of that nature and which holes on the spacer plate flow which fluid. I think you told me once before you were working on something like this with a Ford and a Nissan core that you bought for this purpose. If the Ford core you have happens to be a 4R75W/E then there's something you may possibly wanna know about it that could possibly trip up a video made on it, depending on what year the core is. If the core is 2001 or newer, the EPC circuit portion of the hydraulic schematics is NO LONGER accurate. Ford made numerous changes to the valve body in 2001, a couple of those being the EPC circuit is no longer connected to the 2-3 backout valve. The Shift Solenoid 2 hydraulic circuit is now connected to the 2-3 backout valve. Also, the Overdrive Servo Regulator Valve Boost Valve and Sleeve are now connected to the EPC circuit. As far as I know, Ford HAS NOT made updated hydraulic schematics to accommodate these and other hydraulic changes not mentioned here. If the core is 2000 or older, then everything should be fine. Sorry for the long post and have a good Memorial Day Hiram.
@dmorley10010 жыл бұрын
No rush. I know you're a busy man. I've actually started doing this on my own on a 4R75 that I have torn down. It's either an 03 or 04, I'm not sure which. That's part of how I found out about the hydraulic changes I mentioned about the EPC circuit. I'd still like in-depth tutorials like I mentioned in my previous comment if for no other reason than to make sure my methods for reading and interpreting the schematics and worm tracks correct. The more I think about it though, the more I think there's a whole bunch of people who most likely need such in-depth tutorials. I'm not saying the other shop is bad or incompetent or anything like that, but from what I saw in it, the tear down video you did of the 4R100 with the no 2-3 up shift is a perfect example of this. If the shop who sent you that unit knew how to read hydraulic schematics and how to translate what is drawn in them to the live unit they happen to be working on, most likely they would have found what you found on that unit and fixed it themselves. Bottom line, watching that video, it looked to me like they needed a specific skill that they didn't have, and they and their customer paid for it both in time and money.

The 2nd piston on the 4T65 will have some blow by on the rings and air will come up through the center of the piston around the bushing area. Normal. stack up the clutch pack in the drum and install snap ring. Crank air up to 40psi and retest. I've never had much success air checking at 20psi. you can stack the 2nd drum on the input housing and into the driven sprocket support and air check the 4th piston, the 2nd piston, and the input and 3rd pistons all through the driven sprocket support.

OK, It was moving but the pressure spike from the on/off pump surge moved the checkball which finally lodged into the spacer plate. I was looking for those type of hydraulic schematics? Chrysler checkball? Part Number? It seems that a lot of the diagnostic work just begins when the transmission is on the table. A lot can be done with a scanner but a lot, I'm beginning to think, can only be done by visual inspection. Thanks much Hiram.

So the failure happened because the check ball was worn out and too small, causing it to stick in the hole, blocking fluid to the appropriate clutches? My boss has an 09 Yukon Denali, same thing, reverse but no forward gears. Dealership says it has a broken hard part inside the transmission, and has recommended a rebuild or replacement at 180k, but I think it is this same issue. Fluid looks ok, brown but not burned. Found the fix. The one way sprag is gone. It's supposed to turn freely one direction. Mine sounded like a 1 inch drive ratchet. And a sprag in another 4L80 that I had apart, it was locked up completely. So if yours is breaking away in 1st gear the sprag is cooked.
